Manufacturers, designers, developers, constructors and architects are invited to take part in the if material award and to compete for one of the sought-after honors. The if material award offers a platform for products that stand out through their intelligent and efficient use of materials and the resulting sustainability. The if material award was first presented in 2005, and today has become an important mouthpiece and trends barometer in the area of materials. The five best entries for an if material award will be chosen to receive the internationally recognized if gold award. The awards ceremony for the if material award takes place during the CeBIT. All winners will be presented to a wide public in an exhibition. Furthermore, the if online exhibition and the if material award yearbook offer all award winners an excellent platform to communicate their outstanding achievements. The if material award is presented every year. For the upcoming competition, manufacturers, designers, developers, constructors and architects are invited to compete in the categories of materials, products and processes. Manufacturers, designers, architects, developers and constructors can enter as many contributions as they wish for consideration for an if material award. if presents the if material award in three categories: 01. material, 02. product and 03. process.

4 page 4 if material award 2011 Categories Evaluation Criteria 01. material This category is for pure materials, newly developed or existing, for which no use must have been found yet. Technical materials intended for mass production may also be submitted in this category. A material sample with details of the most important properties of the material must be provided for the jury session. 02. product Products from all branches of the industry may be entered for this category. These products should use new or familiar materials and materials properties (e.g. conduction, illumination, energy storage, material saving, etc.) in an innovative way. Original products or prototypes and scale models are required for the judging. A complete material sample would also be desirable. It is also possible to register product concepts or ideas in this category. In this case, for the jury to make its decision a comprehensive description is necessary that precisely illustrates the properties and functions of the product. 5 page 5 if material award 2011 Registration You can find the online registration form for this competition in my if. In the product Information text fields of the registration form, we need a short description of the product, its function and its design in both German and English (max. 650 characters per language, including punctuation.) The jury will use this short description as a basis for their decision. If you receive an award, this description will be presented to you again as a basis for the representation in the if packaging award yearbook 2011 and in the if online exhibition. This description must be provided in both languages. Use the registration form to upload 2 photos for each competition entry in the following format: File format: JPG File size: max. 5 MB Colour format: CMYK or RGB The images are a necessary part of the registration. After we have received your online registration including two photos of your product We will send you an confirming that we have received your registration and photos. This will also contain an entry-id for your entry. The entry-id is composed of the competition-id and a five-digit number that identifies your entry and allocates it to your personal data. It is very important that you use this entry-id for all communication, shipping, product- and packaging labels since we will otherwise not be able to identify the entry. 2. You will receive an invoice for the participation fees. This is payable via bank transfer (see bank details). Unfortunately, we cannot accept cash- or credit card payments. Please note that the invoice address cannot be changed once it has been registered. Please check whether your registration is complete and contains all the necessary data. In order to provide the same conditions of participation for everyone, each participant in the if packaging award can submit two photos only. Only in the case of complex products or systems, may an exception be granted. If this applies to you, please send an to the if team that is responsible for the if competition you are participating in. if reserves the right to have the final decision on this matter.

6 page 6 if material award 2011 Jury An international expert jury has been commissioned by if and will discuss and evaluate all submitted entries in a dedicated, critical and constructive way. The selection process for the if material award is not public, and takes place over one day. During this process, it will become clear which products from which companies and designers meet the evaluation criteria for outstanding excellence in design. Each jury member can only participate in two consecutive juries. If a jury member is directly connected to one of the submitted entries, they are no longer allowed to vote. The decision of the jury is legally binding, also as regards the pre-selection results. Legal recourse is excluded.

7 page 7 if material award 2011 Handling and Logistics Submission of entries Please send the materials needed for evaluation according to the category your entry is registered in between November 1 and December 17, 2010 at the latest to the address below: Please remind that the if material award has no pre-selection process all registered entries have to be sent in for evaluation. In this case, be sure to ship your entry in reusable packaging. Registrants are responsible for all return transport costs, including any applicable customs fees. Should the participant not send in the requested material, the entry is not considered to be automatically cancelled, but will be evaluated by the materials uploaded upon registration.

8 page 8 if material award 2011 Service for award winners The if material award and the winners of an if gold award All successful contributions to if competitions will receive the if logo, and are entitled to use this logo for commercial purposes. An if award not only signifies outstanding achievements in design, but also ensures that the award winners will receive points in the if ranking. The five best contributions to the if material award will additionally receive the if gold award and the sought-after if sculpture, designed in 1996 by Herbert Schultes. if ranking All award winners of the if competitions will receive points in the if ranking. 20 points are given for winning an if award. For gold award winners, 100 points will be given to both the designers in the if ranking creative and the manufacturers or clients in the if ranking company. The basis for the if ranking is formed by all if competitions run throughout the last three years. The if ranking is updated after each new awards ceremony. Awards ceremony The award winners of the if gold award will be announced at the awards ceremony. The awarding of these special prizes is carried out in a dedicated ceremony each year. if material award yearbook The if material award yearbook, a comprehensive and attractive document, is a constant and important part of the competition. All award-winning contributions to the if material award will be published, including two images, information on the designer and a description in both English and German. This excellent publication serves as a reference tool all over the world and is therefore a great advertising instrument for each participant. Each award winner will receive one copy of the if material award yearbook The publication of all award-winning contributions in the if material award yearbook is obligatory for all award winners. if material award exhibition The award winners will be presented in the course of the CeBIT Participation in the exhibition is compulsory for winners of an if award. if online exhibition With some 3.5 million page views per month, the if website is one of the most popular design platforms on the Internet. Visitors from over 100 countries come to find information about the if competitions. All award-winning contributions will be represented with up to two images and a description in German and English. This exhibition is not limited in duration. Fees for award winners if material award yearbook 2011 Each product that receives an award must be published in the if material award yearbook: EUR 400 per entry for a single page. An optional double page is EUR 700,00. The if material award yearbook 2011 will be published in a bilingual edition. If you are an award winner, the description of your products will have to be uploaded to the my if area in both languages. You can commission us to have your descriptions translated for you. For this service we will charge you a fee of EUR if online exhibition Each product that receives an award must be published in the if online exhibition. The fee for each individual product is EUR if material award exhibition The exhibition fees for the if material award 2011 is EUR per award-winning entry.
