WEC s network of 93 national committees represents over 3,000 member organizations including governments, industry and expert institutions. Further details can be found at About the World Energy Congress Running since 1924, the triennial World Energy Congress is WEC s global flagship event that enables dialogue among ministers, CEOs and industry experts on critical developments in the energy sector. The Congress is the world's premier energy gathering. It offers a unique opportunity for participants to better understand energy issues and solutions from a global perspective. The 22 nd World Energy Congress will be held in Daegu, Korea (Rep. of) from October Further details can be found at Daegu Congress Future Energy Leaders Programme In an effort to identify and encourage the next generation of energy leaders, each World Energy Congress features a special Future Energy Leaders Programme (FELP) aimed at young professionals in the energy sector. Candidates for this programme come from all over the world and are nominated by WEC s Patrons, Global Partners and Member Committees. Nominated delegates will participate in sessions designed specifically for young leaders. These sessions will include Expert Roundtables and Peer Working Groups, providing a platform to exchange and challenge views in an energy-focused setting. Topics will explore the most pressing issues on the global agenda such as the energy policy trilemma, social innovation, and financing of future energy projects. Future Energy Leaders (FELs) will have the opportunity to prepare a statement, the "FEL Vision" to share their thoughts and conclusions with global leaders during the closing ceremony of the main Congress. Future Energy Leaders are also invited to attend key sessions within the main Congress programme and will have the chance to participate in social events and technical tours. The Daegu programme provides a unique opportunity for young delegates to network with energy leaders and decision makers; to develop a truly global Page 1 of 6

2 perspective by working with experts and peers from all over the world; and to contribute to energy dialogue in order to shape energy solutions for tomorrow. Becoming a Future Energy Leader WEC s Future Energy Leaders Programme is geared towards exceptional young individuals with a commitment to shaping the global energy future. WEC welcomes young leaders from all regions of the world and from diverse sectors such as government, industry, academia, civil society & social entrepreneurship. WEC FELs represent the true future of energy leadership. Successful applicants will serve a three-year term as a WEC Global FEL. In addition to attending the 2013 Daegu Congress, they will also have the opportunity to participate in WEC s work programme and attend other select events. At the end of their 3-year tenure, individuals can join the FEL-Alumni community and remain part of the WEC network. To apply for the programme, interested candidates should send a completed application form, together with supporting documentation, to their local WEC National Committee. All candidates should meet the following essential criteria: Have solid interest and experience in energy & be able to demonstrate a specific achievement of relevance. For clarification, this achievement is broadly interpreted and could be an award; start up; title; experience; or exceptional contribution of some kind Be aged between 25 and 33 years at time of Congress Have obtained a bachelor s degree. A post-graduate Masters or PhD qualification is desirable though not essential Have a minimum of 3 years full-time professional or post-graduate experience in an energy-related field Be fluent in English, as the programme will be delivered in English Be highly motivated and encouraged to work with WEC, share their views and experiences Be willing to become members of the Future Energy Leaders Community and be engaged with WEC for a three year term. After three years, candidates can remain part of this community by becoming Future Energy Leader Alumni All candidates should provide the following supporting documentation: A complete application form, including a written statement on his/her personal achievement and how it relates to WEC (500 words max) A high resolution photograph Curriculum Vitae (limited to working achievements & professional certifications) Prose biography (max 185 words) for publication on WEC s website A letter of professional recommendation (optional) Page 2 of 6

3 Registration Fees Applicants should be financially supported by their employing company. Financial support should cover registration fee, expenses and travel costs. The Congress organiser will pay for accommodation. Registration fees are as follows: Early bird payment (until 10-May-13) Regular payment (11-May-13 until 15-Aug-13) Late / onsite payment (16-Aug-13 until 17 Oct-13) $1,900 USD $2,000 USD $2,100 USD FELs from developing countries will have their registration fees waivered. 4 Recruitment Guide Future Energy Leaders Programme 1. Introduction This document is designed to help WEC members prepare and recruit for WEC s Future Energy Leaders Programme, which begins at one triennial World Energy Congress, and terminates at the next. The document comprises a set of guidelines on how best to recruit their respective Future Energy Leaders. The document also contains a general overview of features for the Programme. WEC London is happy to provide further guidance if necessary. 2. Aims of Recruitment and Selection The Future Energy Leaders Programme is designed to enable exceptional young professionals, with a passion for energy, to contribute and further their knowledge and skills in an energy-focused environment; to play a more visible part in the debate on energy and sustainable development; to share their experiences in an international context; to enhance their capacity to make decisions concerning the role energy plays in our lives; and to encourage them to become engaged in WEC s work. The aim of the recruitment process is to find the most talented and suitable candidates for the Future Energy Leaders Programme. These candidates will then become a part of WEC s Global Community of Future Energy Leaders for a three-year term. WEC London provides this consistent set of general guidelines to help WEC members recruit appropriate candidates and enable Congress organisers to run a successful programme. A good recruitment process will: Enhance the overall experience of the programme for the candidates involved Ensure that candidates are of a consistent and appropriate level Support a professional and robust programme Help identify exceptional candidates who can become tomorrow s energy leaders Provide a pool of outstanding young professionals for future WECengagement Promote a positive image for WEC and WEC members Promote visibility for the Future Energy Leaders Programme and the overall WEC mission Provide a platform through which to engage the next generation of Future Energy Leaders Page 4 of 6

5 3. Features of the Future Energy Leaders Programme WEC Patrons are invited to nominate 2x candidates for participation. WEC Global Partners are invited to submit 1x application. Additional participants, in ranked order, may be also nominated, though participation is not guaranteed. Participation of additional candidates will depend on programme capacity and regional distribution. The deadline for this nomination process is the 20 th March The Delegate s company should be willing to pay the registration fee, expenses and travel costs for their nominated representatives, while the Congress organiser pays for accommodation. The Future Energy Leaders Programme takes place within the context of the triennial World Energy Congress and is aimed at encouraging interaction among young professionals and experienced professionals from around the globe. It also provides an opportunity to meet and hear from the most prominent and respected energy industry experts. The programme for the Future Energy Leaders is prepared and mutually agreed between WEC London and the Congress organisers. The programme includes the opportunity for the Future Energy Leaders to attend the main Congress Programme, including Fire-Starter Speeches, Keynote Addresses, Plenary Sessions, Special Addresses as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The Future Energy Leaders Programme will include breakfast seminars with talks by energy industry leaders and working group discussion sessions on the themes of the Congress. During the course of the Congress Programme, the Future Energy Leaders will develop a statement, highlighting the outcomes and conclusions of their discussions, presenting their views and suggesting new ideas and solutions. This statement is presented to all Congress delegates by one or more Future Energy Leaders at the Congress Closing Ceremony. Following the Congress, the Future Energy Leaders Global Programme, managed by WEC London, will provide a platform through which young professionals can remain engaged with WEC. The programme will provide opportunities to participate in WEC s work programme; attend select events; contribute to WEC s global studies and research; contribute and shape the Future Energy Leaders Issues Monitor; network with energy leaders across the globe; and be acknowledged on WEC s website, in WEC publications and at WEC events where appropriate. 6 Each candidate will serve a three-year term as a WEC Future Energy Leader. This will start with one Congress, and end at the next. At the end of this three-year tenure, candidates can join the FEL-Alumni community and remain part of the WEC network. 4. Recruitment Process This guide includes information and advice on how to recruit the best candidates. In addition to these guidelines, please also find a sample application form attached (Attachments 2) which Committees may wish to use as the base for their own recruitment of Future Energy Leader delegates. These selected application forms, together with any necessary supporting documentation, are to be sent back to WEC London (chandler@worldenergy.org), with the candidates ranked in order of the Committee s preference as representatives of their Committee in the Future Energy Leaders programme. 5.
