1 SEATTLE PORTLAND SACRAMENTO PLEASANTON IRVINE 2012 DEACON CHARITABLE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT FEATURED: In November of 2011, the Irvine Giving Committee made a major grant of $5,000 to the Aquarium of the Pacific to support the K-12 science programs they provide to schools throughout Orange County.
2 To Our Friends: The Deacon Charitable Foundation has evolved into a philanthropic leader in corporate social responsibility in the communities in which we live and work. Our giving is directed toward children, youth and families, animal protection and the environment because those are the issues our employees care about. This approach is possible because the focus of our parent company, S.D. Deacon, is service, teamwork and communication. Our culture is one of support, humility and encouragement of personal growth. We value open-mindedness and encourage change as a way to improve. We are driven by the entrepreneurial spirit of our people, who in turn are supported by the resources of our company. Everyone is encouraged to pursue his or her passion, to learn, to grow and to give. This is why for more than 30 years, a key piece of the S.D. Deacon mission/vision is to Support Our Communities through charitable giving. Beginning in 2005, the company leadership chose to create a grant-making foundation funded from profits. Each year S.D. Deacon places 4% of their profit into the Deacon Charitable Foundation, or other direct charitable giving. This is four times the national average. We support organizations that address vital community needs in the areas of human services, animal welfare & the environment An important reason for starting the Foundation was to accumulate a reserve of funds from good years thereby allowing the Foundation to continue making grants in lean years. Though the recovery from the recession was slower than anyone could have foreseen, our all-volunteer giving committees have been able to make grants to non-profits that serve those in need through it all. Another unique aspect of the Foundation s grant making is that S.D. Deacon employees make all of the giving decisions. Every other year, our employees are asked to complete a survey, the results of which guide the Giving Committees grant making. We are hopeful that our giving will inspire other small and medium-sized companies to join us. None of us have unlimited resources, but if we give what we can, the dollars and volunteer hours will add up. Our collective impact can make a huge difference in the communities where we live and work. With gratitude, Deacon Charitable Foundation Board of Directors: Paul Cunha Steve Deacon Jarrod Fogle Kendra Howell Anke Rind Richard Smith
