2 Welcome! This participants pack is designed to give you more information about the R3 Challenge and how you can support the work of Te Whakaora Tangata through your fundraising. We will give you some useful instructions and helpful fundraising tips to guide you through this adventure. The R3 Challenge About the Challenge Happening on November 4th & 5th 2017, the Te Whakaora Tangata R3 Challenge is a triathlon with a twist! It s a fun and challenging event for individuals, families or a team of friends to do together. R3 stands for ROW, RIDE and RUN (rowing, cycling, running) the 3 R disciplines you can choose from or combine to knockoff the distance of 100km (or less if you choose) in 48 hours. The R3 Challenge is a virtual event, which means you complete your challenge wherever and whenever you like - raising funds to help Te Whakaora RESTORE, RESOURCE and RECONNECT South Auckland s most at-risk families. 3 Where to row, ride, and run Cycleways & Walkways Auckland has a number of scenic off-road cycle and walkways that are ideal for a ride or run. These routes are perfect for you or your team to ride or run along to work off those R3 kilometres while experiencing Auckland s picturesque landscapes. Below are the main routes for each area of Auckland: CENTRAL: Lightpath and Nelson St cycleway, Auckland waterfront along Tamaki Drive, Ponsonby Heritage Ride, Waitemata Harbour Ride, or Maungawhau Volcanic Ride. SOUTH: Mangere Bridge - Onehunga route, or Conifer Grove Wattle Downs Weymouth routes. EAST: Rotary shared path or Cascades shared path. WEST: Twin Streams and Henderson Creek shared paths, Northwestern cycleway, Opanuku Stream shared path, or Oratia Stream shared path. NORTH: Te Araroa trail, Matakana ride, Little Manly loop, or Army Bay loop. Designing your challenge The R3 Challenge is designed to be flexible to suit the needs of you or your team so that you can create a combination of sporty disciplines and set a distance that will challenge you and impress your sponsors. If completing the challenge as a team, you can decide how you re going to R your way towards your goal. Decide how many disciplines you want to complete the challenge with, and whether your team members do the same disciplines or pick one each. Either way, you ll add up the individual distance completed by each team member to reach your team s target distance. Be sure to challenge each other (a great opportunity for some friendly competition), but most importantly have fun with it! For maps and more information on these routes, visit If completing the R3 Challenge outside of Auckland, check your local council website for info regarding cycleways and walkways in your city. Fitness Centres If you re completing the R3 Challenge in Auckland and want to clock up some of your kilometers at the gym but don t have access to the right facilities, we ve got your covered! Our R3 Challenge partners, Auckland Council, YMCA and CLM (Community Leisure Management) are opening up their fitness centres for you to use, free of charge! We ll send every participant an R3 Challenge ID card that you can present to participating fitness centres on the weekend of the event to gain access to their great facilities with all the equipment you ll need to complete your challenge (please see our website for details of participating fitness centres and further information). Using fitness apps With Everydayhero, you can track your kilometres by connecting fitness apps to your fundraising page, or manually log your kilometres so sponsors can track your progress. It s a great way for friends, family and sponsors to encourage and motivate you through your training and during the event. For details and instructions on how to do this, please click here.

4 Te Whakaora Tangata Established as a charitable trust in 2010, Te Whakaora Tangata means Life Restoration for the People. Our vision is to see once vulnerable families living well and children given every opportunity to reach their full potential. Working primarily in South Auckland, the values of faith, family, partnership and stewardship underpin our work with parents every year, directly impacting vulnerable children. The success of Te Whakaora s work is not only reflected by the number of families strengthened, but by the reality of hopefilled relationships and the breakdown of intergenerational cycles of family dysfunction. We believe it s impossible for parents to create a safe, nurturing environment for their children if the important relationships in their own lives are dysfunctional. Therefore, Te Whakaora s work is uniquely focused on our three R s Restoring relationships by addressing past trauma; Resourcing families with tools to live well; and Reconnecting people with opportunities to study, work and give back to their community. We support parents through this unique three-stage process over a two-year period, dramatically increasing protective factors in the early years of a child s life. Since our organisation was established in 2010, we ve helped to transform the lives of hundreds of disadvantaged families changing futures for more than 2000 vulnerable children. As a registered charity, Te Whakaora relies solely on the generosity of caring New Zealanders and Trusts to sustain and grow our work. To date we receive no government funding. Your support and contribution as a participant of the R3 Challenge will make a huge difference to what we are able to achieve and who we re able to reach through our programmes.

5 Fundraising Tips Follow these pro tips to make sure you get the most out of your R3 Challenge. The more effective you are at getting your friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you, the greater impact you ll have on the lives of vulnerable families in South Auckland. Every bit counts! r u o y e Creat e g a p o r e h y a d y ever Once you ve registered to participate in the R3 Challenge, you ll be able to set up your own (or teams) everydayhero page, so people can donate to your challenge. Your page is where people will learn about you and why you are participating in this event, so it s the perfect platform to get your message across. Start by uploading a profile picture of you doing something athletic like running, riding or rowing so people get an idea of what you re like in action and can see who they re sponsoring. Next, let supporters know why you re doing this. Share your story about why this cause is important to you to show supporters your passion and convince them to sponsor you. If your fundraising is going well and you re close to reaching your target, increase it! Having a bigger target will motivate supporters to donate more.

6 Social Media The best way to spread the word about your R3 Challenge is though social media. Use Facebook, Instagram and twitter to tell people about your challenge by sharing the link to your everydayhero page, asking for donations, and keeping people up to date with your fundraising and training progress. Use Facebook to create an event page where you can write a personalised invitation to potential sponsors, telling them more about your challenge. Link your everydayhero page to the Facebook event page, and you can post to remind people to donate and thank them for their support. Share pictures on Instagram and Facebook of you, your family, or team training for your R3 Challenge, and don t forget to tag Te Whakaora Tangata on Facebook! You should also paste the link to your fundraising page, in your Instagram bio. The more you post and share your journey with your networks, the more involved they ll be in what you re doing, and the more funds you ll raise. Don t forget to ask your friends and family to share your fundraising page with their contacts to reach even more potential sponsors. Other Handy Tips 1. Start early: The earlier you begin fundraising, the easier it will be. So plan your fundraising strategy and work towards achieving your goal early. At Work Your place of work is a great source of potential sponsors. Start by ing your work mates to tell them a bit about the R3 Challenge, with a link to your fundraising page. Don t forget to explain why this cause is important to you. Then, when you see them at work, talk to them about it and encourage them to donate to your challenge. Why not put up a poster about the R3 Challenge next to the coffee machine. You can download the poster and other R3 promo materials at r3challenge.org.nz Ask your employer to sponsor you. Many companies participate in corporate giving and some even match the money you raise dollar for dollar. Your HR department would be a good place to start to find out about that. Remind them that donations to Te Whakaora Tangata are tax deductable, so everyone wins! 2. Go first: Make the very first donation to your fundraising page. This will show others how much to donate and they ll see how committed you are to the challenge. 3. Suggest an amount: Asking people for a specific amount reduces the uncertainty that often stops people from donating at all. 4. Remind people: Don t be afraid to send people follow up s and reminders to donate as people may forget or be too busy to donate when you first ask. A few gentle reminders about your training progress and fundraising target will prompt people to donate to your challenge. 5. Say thank you: Remember to thank every person or organisation that donates to your challenge, regardless of how big or small their contribution is.

Tag us in your posts and photos so that we can see how you re getting on and so your sponsors can easily find out more about us. 8 R3 Challenge FAQ s With the R3 Challenge approaching, you may have some questions or concerns around the specifics of the challenge, but do not fear! We ve got you sorted; below are answers to some of the questions you may have about the event. When is the event? This is a virtual event, so you can complete your R3 Challenge at any time over the weekend of the 4 th & 5 th of November If you can t complete it on that weekend, that s fine - you can pick another weekend in November if you need. This flexibility also allows for bad weather or sickness. The only catch is you need to complete your challenge within 48hrs, and you won t be able to take advantage of the free fitness centre access on any other weekend. Why do I need to create a fundraising page? Your Everydayhero page is your fundraising and communication hub! It s where your friends, family and potential sponsors will go to learn about why you re participating in the R3 Challenge. Your personalised information will allow them to connect with your goal and motivate them to support you. Supporters will also visit your fundraising page to track your fundraising progress, as well as your training progress through the integration of fitness apps on your Everydayhero page. Everydayhero is our event platform so participants and supporters need to use this channel to connect with the event and donate. What is the process on the day? Once you have chosen the dates and format of your challenge, you can start to work towards your goal distance via the R disciplines you have chosen. You can complete your challenge indoors or outdoors, by using your own gym equipment, or by using the equipment at one of our fitness partners facilities. Auckland Council, YMCA and CLM are our R3 Challenge partners providing free access to their facilities for all participants on November 4 th & 5 th (please see our website for more information). How can my supporters follow my progress? Connect a fitness app to your fundraising page so your sponsors can follow as you complete your challenge (instructions on our website). Also, remember to post pictures to Facebook and Instagram to show your friends and family how you got on with the challenge. Tweet us and tag us in your posts as we would love to know how it went. Do I have to run, row or ride (cycle)? You can pick one, two, or all three R disciplines to achieve your target distance. How you want to achieve your goal is up to you. You can even add your own activities to complete the challenge provided it starts with the letter R and is a physical challenge (riding in the car for 100km doesn t count). Do I have to complete a distance of 100km, or can I choose a different target? Instead of a full 100km challenge, you can choose to complete a 50km, 25km or any other distance as an individual or team. This event is designed with young families in mind, so with the family/team challenge, you add the total combined distance covered by all team members to reach your goal. How do we complete the challenge as a team? Pull together a team of 2 or more participants to take on the R3 Challenge. Decide as a team whether you will take on the 100km, 50km or 25km R3 Challenge, and add the total combined distance covered by all team members to achieve your goal. Decide how many disciplines you want to complete the challenge with, and whether your team members do the same disciplines or pick one each. Remember, there is heaps of flexibility, so you re welcome to come up with your own R disciplines. Can I participate in the R3 Challenge if I live outside of Auckland? The R3 Challenge is a virtual event, which means you can complete your challenge wherever and whenever you like. You are welcome to complete the challenge outside of Auckland, however, you won t have free access to the fitness centres as the participating fitness centres are all Aucklandbased. You can complete your challenge at your own gym or around your neighbourhood. Be sure to check your local council website for information regarding cycle-ways and walk-ways in your area that are suitable to run or ride on to complete your challenge.
