National 4-H Week provides a great opportunity to put local 4-H in the spotlight by creating a window display or 4-H informational booth and completing a club scrapbook. Be sure to call the office to let us know where your window will be. Window displays must be in place by 8 a.m. Tuesday morning and remain in place until the 12th. Scrapbooks are due to the Extension Offices by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8. Remember, all clubs that participate will receive a monetary award at Achievement Night. 4-H Member Records Submitted to State Any 4-H member who meets the age requirement of years of age as of September 1 is eligible to submit records to state. Information and application are available at the Extension office. Records are due to the Extension Offices by 4:30 pm on December 13. Please call to let us know if you plan to submit your records. We are available to help with your state award application. Re-enrollment DEADLINE The re-enrollment deadline and project selection sheets will be due December 13 (the second Friday in December). The $20 4-H program fee for re-enrolling members will be due to club leader by February 1. 4-H clubs will be responsible for submitting one check. 2 October 2013 Page 2 Premier LCP Award The 4-H Premier LCP Award is sponsored by the Illinois Farm Bureau and recognizes achievement in the agricultural industry. LCP stands for Leadership, Citizenship, and Professionalism. This two-tier award program involves an intense leadership development conference and award plaques. The top ten 4-H members will receive an all expense paid trip to the Premier 20 Leadership Conference in April 2014 in Bloomington IL. Applicants must be age 17 or older by December 1. Applications will be available at the Extension Office in mid October and must be postmarked by December 1. Workshops, Workshops, Workshops Hunter Safety Course A youth hunter safety course is scheduled for Oct from 5:30 9 p.m. at the Scott County Extension office in Winchester. Please call Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau at to sign up. Other Ideas for Workshops Let us know your ideas for workshops and we will see if we can get one set up for our unit. The New 4-H Year As the new 4-H year begins and you begin to enroll in your projects, please don t order a project manual that you or a sibling, already have at home. Remember up to ten manuals are free to you but do cost the county lots of money each year. If you have project manuals that are in good shape that you no longer need or use, bring them by the Extension Office so someone else can use them. When filling out your project enrollment forms make sure you mark the SQUARE to enroll in the project and the CIR- CLE to request the project manual. Remember all re-enrolling 4-H members must have their enrollments into the Extension Office by December 13, 2013 to be considered a 4-H member during the year. You may add or drop projects until May 1. Calhoun County News Congrats to 4-H Fair trophy winners Best of Show Rabbit: Lucas Long Best of Show Poultry: Lucas Long Best of Show Dog: Lucas Long Reminders: Achievement Night will be held on November 7 at 4 p.m. at the Calhoun County Extension office. Achievement Night is where 4-H members and leaders are recognized for all of their hard work and dedication to the 4-H program during the H program year. First year 4-H members who are present will receive a 4-H t-shirt. Door prizes will be given away so don t miss out on the fun! 4-H is for anyone who is 8 years old or in the third grade as of September 1, 2013 and who has not reached their 19th birthday. Anyone 5-7 years old may be a cloverbud. So why don t you spread the word and tell your friends what a great organization 4-H is. Remember there is a $20 program fee to be a member of 4-H. Non-perishable food item will be collected and donated to the local food pantries.

First year 4-H members who are present will receive a 4-H t-shirt. Door prizes will be given away so don t miss out on the fun! Non-perishable food item will be collected and donated to the local food pantries. SPECIAL NOTE: We are looking to put together a powerpoint of pictures from last year s 4-H events. If you have any pictures you would like to share, please them to Beth Warden at oag55@yahoo.com. Please send pictures in JPEG format. Beth has graciously agreed to put the powerpoint together. Federation Update We will be having our first meeting on October. 14. We will be electing officer and planning the events for the year. Federation is open to any junior high or high school students in the 4-H program. Greene County News Achievement Night Change of Date Greene County Achievement Night will be held on Monday November 4, 2013 at the Greene County Extension office in Carrollton at 7 p.m. recognized for all of their hard work and dedication to the 4-H program during the program year. There will be special awards for Members, Cloverbuds, Secretary, Treasurer, and Club of the Year. Door prizes will be given away so don t miss out on the fun! Come celebrate your achievements! Update: Federation Meeting Dates Set The first Greene County 4-H Federation meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, October 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Greene County Extension office. Federation is the leadership club for 4-H members. Anyone enrolled in 4-H that is junior high or high school age is welcome to be a part of Federation. If you want to join Federation, please me at Littig@illinois.edu. The future of federation will be dependent upon interest from the 4-H members. Highlight from H Year Shooting Sports Update FOR 2013, there will be NO Shotgun program in Cass County. 4 October 2013 Morgan County Halloween Safe Trick or Treat Morgan County Federation will be sponsoring a Safe Trick or Treat night at the Morgan County Extension Office on October 30 from 6-8 p.m. Federation members will be decorating the office and treating children to candy and fun. 4-H members and clubs are asked to donate bags of candy for the event. Scott County Page 4 Federation Update The Scott County Federation will be having their first meeting on Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. We will be electing officers and selecting meeting dates. 5 4-H MEMBER/LEADER INFORMATION This year, the National Science Experiment will be 4-H Maps & Apps! Designed by Colorado State University Extension, this set of activities will turn young people into geospatial thinkers as they design and map their ideal park, use GIS mapping to solve community problems and contribute data about their community to the United States Geological Survey. Ask your local extension office for information on planned events in your county! Illinois Farm Bureau & Affiliates 4-H LCP Award Program Each year, the Illinois Farm Bureau and their Affiliates help Illinois 4-H recognize 10 outstanding 4-H members by sponsoring the Illinois 4-H Premier LCP Award. Aimed at members age 17 or older by December 1, LCP stands for Leadership, Citizenship, and Professionalism. The application focuses on leadership positions the member has held; participation in county, state, and national events; 4-H goals they have set and reached; and reference evaluations. Each county may submit two applications; however last year, we had fewer than 15 applicants! We KNOW there are top-notch youth out there that deserve this recognition and opportunity to hone their leadership skills. The top ten youth selected on the state level are invited to a 3-day leadership conference in April and are recognized with plaques at the Illini Summer Academies banquet in June. Applications will be available through your local Extension office or via the State 4-H website (Be sure you download the version!): Check with your local Extension office for the county deadline; the state deadline for submission is January 3, Speaking for Illinois 4-H in Northwest IL Get your older 4-H members in on the action of helping talk to elected officials, improving their public presentation skills, and taking that step beyond their current level of activity encourage them to talk to their local Extension Office about the Speaking for Illinois 4-H (SFI4-H) program! Sponsored by the Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership Team, the next SFI4-H Training is set for Saturday, November 9 in Rock Island. Doors are opening for our SFI4-H trainees! SAVE THE DATE: JLC Date Set for 2014 It s not too early to start recruiting your 7th and 8th grade 4-H members for the 2014 Illinois 4-H Jr. Leadership Conference (JLC) in February! Help them to expand their leadership skills, learn more about various project areas, and focus on team-building. JLC has helped hundreds of 4-H members open their eyes to opportunities within the 4-H program whether it s helping younger members with projects, improving on their communication skills, or building officer talents all while having fun and meeting youth from across the state. JLC is scheduled for February 8-9, 2014 at the Decatur Conference Center & Hotel, Decatur. (This is two weeks earlier than past conferences!) On-line registration will open by mid-november and will end in early January. Information will be posted on the JLC website Save these dates and join other 4-H volunteers from the North Central Region to learn cuttingedge information. The online training sessions will engage volunteers in developing a personal Flight Plan for the future. Topics will include: Monday, November 18, 2013 OMG! You ve Got 4-H Parents! Now What?? An Ohio State study of parents, 4-H volunteers, and sports coaches showed that members 4-H enjoyment is positively correlated with support from parents and volunteer advisors. Tuesday, December 3, 2013 Engaging Teens & Older Youth The 2011 Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development leadership study found that participation in leadership activities strengthens youth skills like public speaking and communication, teamwork and conflict resolution that are increasingly important to employers. Tuesday, January 14, 2014 Using Technology to Enhance Your 4-H Experience Research from University of Minnesota found youth in 4-H have a higher level of comfort in using social media than adult 4-H volunteers. Social media can be compelling method to communicate with 4-H members, but volunteers need the skills to use if effectively. Monday, February 3, 2014 Exploring the Science of 4-H Projects National 4-H research shows that youth who have positive experiences with STEM-related projects are more likely to pursue education and careers in math, science and engineering. Save the dates and watch for registration information from your Extension Unit!
