We plan to extend programming to Northern Delaware in the near future. Describe Population Served and Annual Number of People Served: Barnstone Art for Kids serves children, ages 4-12, who s sense of security has been shaken, making them feel helpless and vulnerable and in need of a positive adult interaction. We are currently targeting Domestic Abuse Coalitions and Shelters in Chester County and Northern Delaware to develop full year program partnerships. In 2013, Barnstone Art for Kids served 47 children through our small group program and 3 children in one-on-one programs. Additionally, we sent 300 crisis kits to Moore Oklahoma tornado victims and provided 80 full program kits to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southeastern Pennsylvania. (Each kit included an art journal, art supplies and materials to complete 6 activities.) This year, we have provided a 6-week program to more than 75 children. We have continued to grow our program, population and volunteers. We now anticipate expanding our program to accommodate full year curriculum at specific target sites. Mission: Using the Power of Art to help children with a shaken sense of security to heal, cope and grow. Proposal Summary: Since November 2013, we have been working with a consultant from the Arts and Business Council in Philadelphia on a Strategic Plan. We have refined our mission, vision and values and identified four major objectives to pursue in the next 18 months to help children Heal, Cope and Grow Develop a year round curriculum called the Power of Art to more effectively connect with our target population and impact positive benefit. Increase Barnstone Art for Kids awareness and penetration of Northern Delaware and Chester County, PA as a recognized resource for the Power of Art program Secure 1 year, annually renewing, partnership between Barnstone Art for Kids and 3 organizations with at least 1 additional partner each year Build Barnstone Art for Kids organization to accommodate growth and assure functional and financial sustainability. 2 We now have set the plan and need to begin the operation. The three main initiatives of Heal, Cope and Grow can be broken down as follows: 1. Development of the Power of Art Curriculum 2. Expansion and improvement of Training Programs 3. The remainder was a result of sales from a fundraiser, rental services and promotional items. In 2014, our budget increased by 50%. As we add staff and increase our services, our 2015 budget will more than double. Organization s history, goals, key achievements and distinctiveness Barnstone Art for Kids evolved from a retail art gallery as it became clear that the real payoff in working with art was captured in the precious moments when art and the human experience converged to bring joy and healing to those in need. Supported by patron and artist relationships Barnstone Art for Kids launched and piloted it s first small group mentoring program in the fall of After witnessing the positive impact on both children and volunteer mentors, Barnstone pursued registration as a 501(c)3 organization. Since then, Barnstone Art for Kids has provided program to almost 200 children at 8 different locations logging more than 825 mentor hours. In November of 2013,we engaged a business consultant from the Arts and Business Council of Philadelphia and embarked on a lengthy strategic plan process: reviewing our mission, vision and values, evaluating our program for effectiveness, identifying the child population of greatest benefit and developing the plan to achieve our vision to be the recognized resource in Chester County and Northern Delaware using the Power of Art to help children who have a shaken sense of identity to heal, cope and grow. Barnstone Art for Kids is distinctive in that our comprehensive art education and creative activity programs have been developed, tested and refined over a three-year period. Our volunteer mentors are largely comprised of art professionals who convey their creative knowledge, passion for the arts and the desire to share this medium of expression with children. Our ability to travel combined with a tailored yearlong program enables us to meet the needs of our partner organizations. Our unique program is created with four elements in mind. Building Confidence: We give children the control to take each project in the direction they choose. When a child's unique vision is supported by our mentors, kids feel confident, empowered and respected. Healthy Expression: We provide fun materials and encourage each child to look at the world in a different light. Each child is granted the freedom to express themselves in their own way without judgment. Kids are allowed to be kids. Nurturing: While assisting with the creative process, our positive adult role models are attentive, empathetic and reassuring toward each child and his or her imagination. Passion: We wholeheartedly believe in the old adage "it takes a village," and we invest our energy into building the right environment that children need to succeed. By pairing a child and mentor, together, they can create positive moments that may impact a lifetime. 2. Funding request: Description of key initiatives Heal, Cope and Grow has three main initiatives. Development to the Power of Art Curriculum With over 3 years of experience delivering art services to children, Barnstone Art for Kids will continue to document and finetune all existing program activities to guarantee an exciting, interactive program for emotionally distressed children. We have made the decision to expand our program to a full 12-month curriculum, divided into 5 blocks or units, each consisting of 6 weekly sessions. The new Barnstone Art for Kids Power of Art Program will meet weekly and include interactive art activities between a child and volunteer mentor in a small group setting to encourage the lifelong benefits of confidence, healthy expression, encouragement and passion. The Power of Art Program includes all equipment and supplies. It features trained volunteers working one on one with the children to encourage positive interaction, creative expression and confidence for kids to stretch their limits- emotionally and artistically. Expansion and Improvement of Training Programs Barnstone Art for Kids mentors are artists and art administrators, parents, teachers and health care professionals - adults and students, all compassionate and creative. The success of the programs are directly linked to the strength and commitment of Barnstone s volunteer mentors. To maintain the quality and creativity of the programs and facilitate growth, a recurring source of volunteers must be cultivated, screened and trained.

4 Identification of Targeted Program Sites Barnstone Art for Kids partners with agencies that provide services to children with a shake sense of security to deliver the Power of Art Program. In an effort to reach the child population with the least access to beneficial art programs, Barnstone Art for Kids is targeting Domestic Abuse Coalitions and Shelters in Chester County and Northern Delaware for the 2015 year to provide the Power of Art Program. The program can be customized for specific location, population requirements, and population goals. Specific needs and issues to be addressed As we scale our programs, we need to be aware of our volunteer resources to insure we can deliver our quality program. The number of volunteers will need to increase and we will need to provide more intensive training and background screenings as we will be working with children who have been exposed to considerable trauma. The individual agencies may participate in part of the training program. Organizational impact if initiative is undertaken How will this grant enhance your organization s capacity? While the number of individuals participating in the program will decrease in 2015, the number of program hours will dramatically increase. We believe that ultimately we can deliver lasting measureable change by providing more instruction and comprehensive programming over a prolonged time period to insure greater comprehension, connection, trust and skill. Each year, our model increases the number of child participants. How will this increase in organizational capacity be measured? We will continue to monitor volunteer and program hours, participant numbers and compile partner satisfaction survey results. Activities to implement the initiative. 5 #1 stressor is when a parent is having problems (divorce, abuse, medical, financial, grief) Each year more than 10 million children in the United States endure the trauma of abuse, violence, natural disasters, and other adverse events. Children tend to blame themselves, have low self-esteem and low expectations of themselves. 3. How impact and results will be demonstrated Successful outcomes of Power of Art Curriculum include: 12 month programming, broken down into 5 blocks each of 6 week duration each Updated program manual with a directory of all projects indexed by age and skill level Comprehension and skill level evaluation for all activities Successful outcomes of the training expansion program include: Updated training manual 10 new Trained Artist/Professional Development HS/College Training Site to encourage new student mentors Successful outcomes of Development of Targeted Program Sites include: Partnering with 3 new Domestic violence/abuse facilities to deliver the Power of Art Program to emotionally distressed children from January 2015-December 2015
