Summary of duties Role Summary: This is an externally focussed role and the post holder will source philanthropic funds for the Faculty of Business and Law (FBL) from corporates, wealthy individuals and trusts and foundations. The primary focus will be, in collaboration with the Development Office to identify, cultivate, negotiate and secure high five, six and seven figure donations. To achieve this, the postholder will be expected to work at a senior level within the University, across the faculty and with the development office to maximise and exploit existing philanthropic relationships, identifying new prospects and creating bespoke funding propositions. The postholder will be expected to work along side other Development Managers in the Development Office with a view to cultivating, growing and stewarding donor relationships specific to FBL; and contributing to the annual fundraising goals for this post. The post holder will be expected to work closely and collaboratively with senior academics in the Faculty and the Faculty's external network. The post holder will also be a project champion for a number of FBL fundraising priorities and will manage the relationship between the Development Office and Faculty. The role will entail interaction with academic members of staff, senior personnel in Trust and Foundations, Corporate bodies, and wealthy individuals. The post holder will also be expected to attend various events as host to VIPs and suitable other guests. Main duties: 1. To create and manage a pipeline of corporate prospects with a view to develop long-term relationships with donors and secure funding of high five - seven figure gifts. In doing so, work closely with individuals and departments in FBL, the development office and the wider University (where necessary) to identify, explore and optimise existing relationships; whilst being creative about the introduction of new prospects for the Faculty of Business and Law. 2. To design and implement cultivation and stewardship strategies for prospects and donors in order to ensure targets are realistic yet ambitious; and funding propositions are suitably tailored. 3. To work with the Senior Manager, External Relations and Development Office in designing and implementing a suitable FBL strategy; and other colleagues across the department towards fulfilling the common goal of annual targets. 4. To create a compelling 'sales' process, writing high calibre proposals and devising creative and compelling presentations that involve other colleagues or relevant faculty members, where necessary. 5. To support the growth of expertise in the Faculty through sharing best practice and collaborative working. In doing so, bring a sense of innovation and dynamism to the team. Other duties: 6. Keep abreast of contemporary funding practices and opportunities; peer initiatives to ensure the OU can play a key role in developing and maintaining a leading market practice. 8. Person specification Qualifications, experience and expertise Graduate or equivalent qualification Demonstrate ability to proactively fundraise for an HE, cultural or charitable institution and successfully deliver large donations. Proven track record in securing high five - seven figure gifts, partnerships and/or sponsorship. Proven track record in securing multi-year funding; and gift renewals and growth. Knowledge and ability to provide a high level of account management for key partnerships. Ability to craft creative and bold approaches to corporates, in line with the OU's strategy and brand. Ability to influence senior decision-makers internally and externally in philanthropic organisations; as well as wealthy individuals to ask/ negotiate for major gifts. Thorough knowledge of corporate partnerships and the funding environment. Ability to work flexibly, to deadlines, with tact and diplomacy, using judgement and initiative. Persuasive writing and negotiation abilities Numerate Excellent team-working and inter-personal skills Ability to understand and interpret complex academic subjects into persuasive proposals and presentations for an external audience. Ability to manage a number of bids simultaneously and juggle a busy and varied workload. Additional Understanding or knowledge of the widening participation agenda in HE Experience of organising or designing bespoke events to cultivate or steward relationships.knowledge of fundraising from private individuals and trusts and foundations. Knowledge of charity law and contracts Good understanding of database systems 4. Role specific requirements e.g. Shift working Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for this post. 5. About the unit/department The post is based in the Open University s Development Office in Milton Keynes. The Development Office The Open University Development Office has two key functions: Fundraising and Page 3 of 5

The Director of Development is Edith Prak, who is supported by the Deputy Director and Head of Fundraising (one role), and the Director of the International Development Office. Fundraising The Fundraising team is responsible for securing philanthropic donations for the university, in support of the OU s Strategic Plan. There are four sub-teams: Major Gifts Seeks donations of 10k+ from individuals, trusts and foundations, corporations and institutional grant makers to support the University s work. Prospect Research Identifies potential prospects and provides briefings and detailed information on people and organisations the Development Office works with. Alumni Fundraising Secures support from legacies and annual fund i.e. people leaving gifts in their Will and from the OU s alumni body, students, members of staff and others. Events Organises and supports fundraising related events across major gifts and other fundraising streams. The Fundraising team is supported by colleagues working in finance and operations and database. 6.
