3 Foreword from our Chief Executive Where we live and the conditions in which we live have a profound impact on our health and the health of those around us. This means that the poorer we are, the younger we will die, and that we will live for more years with ill-health. We believe that this kind of health inequality is a matter of profound and avoidable social injustice. Our work is centred around supporting local people to help make change happen; we work in partnership with local people and we don t do to them. We support them to create the changes they feel are needed to make their neighbourhoods even better places to grow, live, work and age. How we work is challenging. It means letting go of power and supporting longerterm and systemic changes at a local level. So far, we have supported over 2,400 local organisations and over 410,000 local people to be more in control of the decisions which affect them every day. We try to work smartly to ensure that what we re doing is sustainable, which includes developing a long-term source of income for the Trust. So far, we have received over 88m to address health inequalities in Great Britain. We place great emphasis on creating an exciting and forward-thinking place to work. We like working with people. We like working in teams. We like being flexible and adapting to change. And we very much like people with energy, ideas and a commitment to social justice. 5 About us 5 Our vision People s Health Trust believes in a world without health inequalities. We believe that where you live should not reduce the length of your life or the quality of your health. Health inequalities remain stubbornly persistent across Great Britain. The Trust was set up to address these inequalities and create fairer places in which to grow, live, work and age. Our work focuses on the social determinants of health. We aim to ensure that local people design and lead ideas which are about their neighbourhoods and work to ensure that money is targeted at those neighbourhoods most affected by disadvantage. 6 6 Our programmes We have three grant programmes - Active Communities, Local People and Local Conversations. Through our programmes, we provide funding and support to encourage resident-focused approaches as a means of addressing the underlying, structural causes of health inequalities.

9 9 9 9 Our funding People s Health Trust is funded by 51 society lotteries, each designed to raise money to address health inequalities in a separate part of Great Britain. The society lotteries operate through The Health Lottery. Each society lottery donates its good causes money to People s Health Trust and the money is restricted for spending in specific areas of Great Britain.

10 The opportunity 10 About the post We are looking to appoint a Grants Officer to join the Grant Programmes Team. You will be on the front-line, supporting organisations as they apply and once funded. The role is about developing relationships to ensure that you support funded partners to make progress towards addressing health inequalities. You will be involved in all aspects of the grants assessment and grants management processes. You will be someone who thrives on using their initiative, enjoys multi-tasking in a very busy environment, and has a keen eye for accuracy and detail, as well as strong analytical, communications and planning skills. We are looking for someone who has direct experience of running/working on community/neighbourhood-based projects. 11 Main tasks and responsibilities 11 Summary The post-holder will be a part of a front-line team supporting grant applicants and funded partners, including carrying out and reviewing assessments and developing supportive relationships with funded partners and ensuring they are progressing well. Building Relationships To communicate the Trust s vision to applicants and funded partners, ensuring a supportive and critical friend relationship is established. This will include: representing the Trust externally; providing excellent customer service; working with colleagues to share knowledge and experience of funded projects; discussing developments in health inequalities with colleagues and funded partners. Assessment Assess and review applications for funding, analysing information against criteria, including interpreting financial accounts and data and reaching recommendations to Panel. Produce and present assessment reports and summaries, including reviews, for decision-making meetings of panels or committees. Undertake project site visits for assessment purposes.

12 12 Grant Management Work with funded partners and support them in meeting their progress indicators. This may include: dealing with grant contracts; reviewing progress to ensure compliance with grant contract terms and conditions (including financial compliance); problem-solving; visiting projects to see progress first hand. Contribute to the wider development of the Trust Work closely with colleagues to: contribute towards the Trust meeting its strategic objectives; play a role in the development of the grant programmes; support the development of new procedures; be a team-player supporting cross-team working and learning General Undertake any other duties as agreed by the Senior Grants Officer or Grant Programmes Manager

13 Person specification 13 Essential To apply, you must have the following experience and skills: Forming excellent relationships with a range of people, including people in grass-roots organisations Making objective judgements against criteria. Analysing budgets, business plans and accounts Presenting verbal and written information to funding panels and committees Using a grants/crm database A deep understanding of inequalities and how they feature in society Running or delivering community/neighbourhood-based projects Analytical Team working Time management Customer care IT skills, specifically Word and Excel An understanding of the voluntary and/or statutory sector across Great Britain To apply, you must also be: able to travel within the UK Desirable We are ideally looking for someone who also has: Knowledge of / interest in health inequalities and/or health policy You must cover all Essential elements of the Person Specification to be invited for interview.
