By taking part in the pledged walk, you will be making a statement that violence against women and children is not just a women's issue - it's EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS and must be solved by the entire community. 5 Fundraising 101- the Basics There are a few tips that every fundraiser should know before they get started. These tips are short and simple, but they will help you to achieve your goal. 1. Set a fundraising goal for yourself and share that goal with everyone you ask to pledge you. 2. When you request a pledge from someone tell them what their pledge will mean to you. Share your story- let them know why you are participating in Walk a Mile in HER Shoes and why it is so important to you. 3. One of the top reasons that Canadians cite for not giving is that nobody asked them. So make sure that you ask people to pledge you! 4. When you receive a pledge, thank the person who has supported you. They will be more likely to support you again in the future if you do. Fundraising 101- Requesting Pledges Sometimes it s challenging to ask someone to pledge you. To help get you started, we ve created a sample request. Use the message below to request pledges from family, friends, and co-workers; be sure to personalize the highlighted areas to make it your own. Sample Pledge Request Dear First Name, On Saturday, October 15th, I am participating in Walk a Mile in HER Shoes. I am walking and raising pledges because [insert your reason for participating here]. Did you know that over 2000 women received help last year through Gillian s Place outreach services? This means 2000 women who never stayed at the shelter received the help they needed. Community support for Gillian s Place is essential, not only do they need to fund raise $500,000 every year to sustain these services; more than 50% of the women were referred to Gillian s Place by a family member or friend. This is why your support is more important than ever. Together we can make a difference! My goal is to raise [insert fundraising goal here] but I can t do it without your help. Please consider pledging me and supporting Gillian s Place. Pledges can be made by cash, cheque or online with a credit card. In order to make an online pledge, visit and then click on sponsor a participant. Use the search engine to find me; click on my name when it appears and follow the instructions on the screen. Online donations are secure and an electronic receipt will be sent directly to your address once the donation is processed. Thank you so much for your support. It really means a lot to me. Sign Your Name Fundraising 101- Donation Plans Page 5
6 When it comes to collecting pledges, sometimes it s hard to know where to start. We ve assembled a series of donation plans to help you on your way. 7 Traditionally, event participants raise money by asking family, friends and co-workers to pledge them. This is a great way to generate funds but it isn t the only way. You can take your fundraising to the next level by hosting your own mini fundraiser. Here are a few fun and easy ideas to get you started. NEW! Dine for a Cause Fundraising Night at Boston Pizza Invite guests for a night out at Boston Pizza! Sell tickets to your family, friends and colleagues for $20. $10 goes to pay for your food and $10 goes towards your Walk a Mile in HER Shoes fundraising goal! Games Night Invite friends and family for a night of competition and laughter! Gather up your favourite board games, provide a few snacks and they are sure to come running. Charge a nominal admission fee from anyone who attends. Movie Night A movie night is a great excuse for a girls or boys night in. Pick a theme that everyone will enjoy, rent the movies, pop some popcorn and you have the recipe for a fun night! Request a nominal donation from anyone who attends. Office Pool Whether it is March Madness, NHL playoffs or the Oscars, people love to participate in office pools. Select your topic, organize the pool and charge an entrance fee from participants. Half of the proceeds go to the winner, the other half to your fundraising total! Request Pledges in Lieu of Birthday Presents If your birthday occurs before walk day, this is a great way to generate pledges. Request pledges from family, friends and co-workers in lieu of presents and office celebrations. Unique Talent Are you a photographer in your spare time? Knit on the weekends? Whatever your hidden talent is, it can be used to help you reach your fundraising goal. Set a price and offer your product or service to those around you. Don t forget to be creative! Yard Sale De-clutter your house and fundraise at the same time! Either all or partial proceeds go directly to your fundraising total it s up to you! No matter what fundraising activity you decide to do, be sure to let people know that you are raising money for Gillian s Place Walk a Mile in HER Shoes. There is a template poster in the Fundraising tools section of this package that you can print off to advertise your fundraiser in advance. Fundraising 201- Online Page 7
