1 ISO/DIN Essay Contest for Young Standardizers in Developing Countries Young? Passionate about standards? Do you see yourself in Berlin, Germany, for one week, all expenses paid? Then maybe you could be the next winner! The theme : How do ISO International Standards help industry in your country to respond to local and global market demands?

2 The aim of the contest is to encourage young professionals in developing countries and economies in transition to engage in international standardization, and to raise awareness of the importance of standards in promoting safe and sustainable economic development. The award is sponsored by DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung), the German Institute for Standardization, and organized within the framework of the ISO Action Plan for developing countries Objective

3 Young standardizers in developing countries are invited to answer the question : The theme : How do ISO International Standards help industry in your country to respond to local and global market demands? For example, you can explore how International Standards can be instrumental in helping industry build confidence with customers and suppliers, access new markets, and contribute to the economic development of your country. The theme Candidates should not only demonstrate that they have researched and studied the topic, but they should put forward a personal analysis and original ideas on the particular challenges faced by their country and how ISO standards can help.

4 The winner will be awarded a certificate signed by the ISO Secretary-General and the Director of DIN, and invited to undertake an attachment at the DIN head office, in Berlin, Germany. The attachment will consist of a one-week training period with exposure to a wide range of standards management activities carried out at the DIN. Do you see yourself in Berlin, Germany, for one week, all expenses paid? The prize The attachment will allow the winner to develop his/her skills and understanding of the various functions within an advanced and highly successful national standards body. All expenses related to the attachment will be covered by the prize. The winner will also be invited to spend time and interact with selected units at the ISO Central Secretariat in Geneva.

5 The contest is open to young standardizers below the age of 35 (i.e. born after 14 May 1977), working in a national standards body (NSB) in a developing country. To ensure that your NSB is a developing country according to the ISO definition, please consult the list of developing countries in ISO. Delegates and experts involved in ISO technical work may also participate in the contest, once duly authorized by the ISO member in his/her country. Who can participate?

6 Submissions will be accepted only in electronic format to Your essay should not exceed words or 10 typescript pages, including illustrations, tables and charts. Essays must be written in English. If English is not your first language, we recommend you have your essay edited to do justice to your work and ideas. Format your essay in font size 11, with double line spacing and a margin of 30 mm on all four sides of the page. Please note that each participant may only submit one essay. Co-authored essays will not be accepted. Entry requirements Applicants grant publication rights to ISO. The winning essay may be published on ISO s Web site, and a summary may be included in ISO Focus+, the magazine of the International Organization for Standardization.

8 Deadline Submissions will be accepted till : The winner will be announced in September The jury ISO will nominate a panel of independent judges to review the essays and select the winning essay. In the event of no essay being of sufficient merit, the jury may decide to withhold the prize.
