1 How We Are Making A Difference ANNUAL REPORT

2 About Feeding Nunavut Feeding Nunavut is an independent, non-partisan advocacy and educational organization whose purpose is to improve the well being of people in the Canadian North, specifically Nunavut. Our goals are to promote civic improvement by raising awareness about food insecurity and the challenging living conditions in Nunavut, and to work, whenever possible, with national, regional and local organizations, to support, programs addressing issues of hunger, poverty, housing, education, health and mental health. Feeding Nunavut is incorporated under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act. What We Do Feeding Nunavut advocates for a food secure Canadian north by pressuring the Canadian government to create long-term change. We work to reduce food insecurity in Nunavut by providing school meal programs, food banks and soup kitchens with funds, as they become available, to purchase the supplies they need most. We have recently launched a pilot program working with one remote Arctic community. The objective of this program is to enable hunters and fishers to provide and share local food with the community and find opportunities for youth to learn harvesting skills. Who We Are Directors: Taye Newman, Geoff Newman and Chris Hitchcock Table of Contents About Feeding Nunavut 1 Emergency Food Relief 3 School Meal Programs 5 Harvesting Local Food 7 Financial Reports 9 Awareness & Advocacy 12 2

4 EMERGENCY FOOD RELIEF According to StatsCan, 46.8% of Nunavummiut households are food insecure. This makes it extremely difficult for the food secure households to sustain the food insecure households. Because of this, many emergency food relief programs struggle to obtain adequate donations. During the last year, we have had the privilege of providing dollars to emergency food relief programs in Nunavut, including a couple that were vulnerable to closing because of lack of support. 6 SCHOOL MEAL PROGRAMS For some children, the school meal program serves as a safety net and at times, can be their only reliable daily access to food. Because of this, supporting school meal programs is a priority for Feeding Nunavut. We provide funds to school meal programs in Nunavut that have identified the need to enhance nutrition levels that the meal program provides to the student population. While each school, and each school meal program is different, feedback about how schools have spent Feeding Nunavut dollars has been: Stock emergency healthy snacks. Increase the amount and types of food the school meal program offers. Provide an emergency meal for kids that go home to no lunch. Provide enhanced nutrition Big Breakfasts. Opportunity to increase cooking skills. Extend length of breakfast program to end of school year. Igloolik Elementary Cape Dorset High School Cape Dorset Elementary Naujaat School Donor SBpulaBons Feeding Nunavut Funding Thanks to the generous support of Feeding Nunavut donors, we have had the privilege of providing dollars to school meal programs that were in jeopardy of running out of funding, or could benefit from funding to enhance student nutrition and/or meet student hunger needs. 8 HARVESTING LOCAL FOOD Country food is the traditional food of Inuit. It is acquired from the land and sea and is healthier and less costly than shipping modern foods to the territory. Country food has many nutritional benefits and is an important part of Inuit culture. The Nunavut Food Security Coalition identified country food as foundational food for Nunavummiut and included it as part of the Nunavut food security strategy and action plan. Feeding Nunavut recently launched a Harvester Support Pilot Program in an effort to increase access to local country food in Nunavut. Per kilo, it s cheaper to reap the bounty from the backyard than to fly it in Todd Johnson, Kivalliq Arctic Foods, Rankin Inlet Starting with one community in Nunavut, we set aside a budget of $5,000 to outfit hunters/fishers with the supplies needed to hunt and/or fish in exchange for a share of the meat harvested. The meat is distributed via traditional Inuit community share, to Elders and/or school meal programs. If we conclude that hunter/fishers contribute to food security, and if Feeding Nunavut donors continue to support the initiative, we will work to expand the program into additional Nunavut communities. Harvester Support Fund Funded via DonaBons Hunter/Fisher Support Donor SBpulaBons General DonaBons Note: Hunter/Fisher Support Donor Stipulations low because of a short fundraising window prior to fiscal year end. Fund spending outcomes will be posted on our website and distributed in our e-newsletter. 8
