1 Dear Colleague, Thirty-eight years ago, Elgin Olrogg, executive director of the Ben B. Cheney Foundation, wondered how he might connect with others who, like him, were working in philanthropy to build a better community. He knew they were around but he also recognized that most didn t know each other. They certainly never came together to share their stories, challenges and opportunities. Working mainly alone, they missed the chance to learn together. Every community in the Pacific Northwest has its Elgin Olrogg; someone who values the importance of relationships, the wisdom of the group and the power of learning together. These leaders bring people together, tapping into shared passion and the desire to be better together. This is the genesis of today s Philanthropy Northwest. What distinguishes our community which spans an immense geographic area - from others is that we ve long understood the power of building and connecting local networks the key to overcoming distance and isolation. In turn, those connected local networks take on a regional identity that fosters national and global connections. Philanthropy here in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming is community, family, corporate, collective, independent, public, tribal, private, local, regional, national, global, small, large, emerging, established, rural, urban, entrepreneurial, responsive, proactive, conservative, moderate and progressive all at the same time. And that is how it should be: a diverse network sharing a common aspiration to collaboratively build resilient communities grounded in unique local cultures of place. As Philanthropy Northwest approaches its 40 th anniversary, the world looks very different than it did when Elgin Olrogg co-founded what was then known as Pacific Northwest Grantmakers Forum. And change is accelerating. I ve spent my first year in conversations with remarkable philanthropic leaders across our region. Your passion for the network and its promise is powerful and heartening. However, I ve equally appreciated your candor about how Philanthropy Northwest needs to evolve to be the indispensable learning community that inspires you on your journey of community impact. You ve asked us to fundamentally rethink ourselves. We hear you! That s why over the past few years Philanthropy Northwest has recommitted itself to being entrepreneurial. We understand that our value is neither static nor formulaic. It s about much more than simply convening and connecting; it is about catalyzing action, be it your own individual or collaborative work.
2 How are we transforming? Philanthropy Northwest is the place where you can bring interesting ideas at any stage and test them out. We have the talent, tools and networks to incubate them and help them thrive. Philanthropy Northwest is now comprised of three teams: the member network that this letter will ultimately ask you to support in 2015; our fast-growing management consulting team, The Giving Practice; and our acclaimed project incubation platform that is home to Mission Investors Exchange, Community Democracy Workshop and potentially several new local, regional and national community-oriented projects in Our ongoing transformation is powered by your belief in the promise of learning together and your willingness to invest in that transformation process. If you believe that philanthropy s future success rests on becoming more interconnected both with peers and cross-sector partners, and more deliberate about learning and acting together, then we are your network. I would be remiss if I didn t thank the amazing board that guides our network. They are community, family, corporate, independent, public, tribal, private, regional, local, small, large, emerging, established, rural, urban, entrepreneurial, responsive, proactive, conservative, moderate and progressive all at the same time. They are you. They are from your local community. They too are committed to the idea that Philanthropy Northwest matters today and, through continuous transformation, will be even more relevant in the future. I invite you to renew your Philanthropy Northwest membership and to consider supporting this transformative journey in 2015 by becoming a sustaining member, so that the Pacific Northwest remains the entrepreneurial laboratory of philanthropy for the country and the sector. If you are already a sustaining member thank you! Clearly there is no finish line, either for your work in building resilient communities or for our work as your partner in those efforts. We look forward to continuing to be a partner in your philanthropic journey. With appreciation, Jeff Clarke CEO Philanthropy Northwest
