What have we been doing? Gearing up! 8
TRISH Programs Translational Research Program Identify and fund gamechanging medical technologies to improve astronaut health Supporting Program Serves as the educational & outreach arm of the institute Scientist Program Provides career and exchange opportunities for scientists and postdoctoral fellows 9
Funding Mechanisms TRP TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM The Translational Research Program encompasses the main research portfolio of the institute. TRI CENTER OF RESEARCH (TCOR) GRANTS TCOR grants involve an interdisciplinary team of investigators working together on a single space health issue (like a program project). TCORs are generally up to ~$3M total funding over 4-years. 10
Funding Mechanisms TRP TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM The Translational Research Program encompasses the main research portfolio of the institute. SMALL OPENLY COMPETED (SOC) GRANTS SOC grants are best suited for a single principal investigator (like an NIH R01 or R03). SOCs are generally up to ~$1M total funding over 3-years. 11
Funding Mechanisms TRP TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM The Translational Research Program encompasses the main research portfolio of the institute. FOCUSED INVESTIGATION PROGRAM TRISH welcomes the submission of unsolicited proposals to its Focused Investigation Program (FIP). This funded vehicle is best suited for pilot or proof-ofprinciple projects with a small amount of funding (<$100K) and a short duration (approximately one year). FIP proposals are subject to programmatic relevance and scientific peer review. 12
Funding Mechanisms TRP TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM Industry grants offer non-dilutive funding with 100 percent of matching funds required. INDUSTRY GRANTS Industry Grants offer non-dilutive funding to U.S.-based companies to develop spacecompatible health solutions from their already existing technologies; 100 percent of matching funds is required to maximize the institute s federal dollars. Just initiated a new partnership with Consortia for Improving Medicine with Innovation & Technology (CIMIT) be on the lookout for a call for proposals soon! 13
Funding Mechanisms TRP TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM Synergy grants seek collaboration with TRISH funded projects, the overall objective is that the result is bigger and broader than each project. SYNERGY GRANTS Small ( $25k/year), short duration (6 to 12 months) grants designed to enable collaboration with currently funded TRISH projects. Intended to permit sharing of resources and personnel across funded projects and allow researchers and NASA to reap synergies from projects. 14
Announcing Synergy Awards! As part of its annual HRP IWS conference, NASA asked investigators to share their research challenges the obstacles they encounter in their work. Every poster, every presentation will list these challenges. For the HRP IWS 2018 TRISH is offering a special opportunity to fund creative solutions! See the TRISH logo on a poster or presentation? Figure out a collaborative solution to a challenge? This quick-turn grant award is available to the person(s) who identifies the most innovative, most crosscutting, and most synergistic solution with a TRISH-funded investigator. The short-term (approximately 6 months) award grants up to $25,000 in funding and the best part, it s as easy as 1,2,3 and you will know quickly! To apply: Check it out! Synergy Grant details on our website Apply! Our 3-page application form on our website ! Your proposal by 4:30 pm CT on Wed, Jan 24 15

Scientist Program PDF POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM Two-year fellowships to perform spacerelated research under the guidance of an experienced mentor. POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM GRANT Enable early career scientists to design, develop and conduct their own space-related research projects under the guidance of experienced faculty mentors. These 2-year fellowships provide a stipend based on NIH guidelines and allowance for healthcare and travel. Dr. Larry Young will mentor TRISH post-docs to become independent researchers in space biomedicine, and to help them develop ties among academic, government and industry laboratories and enable the formation of a community of post-doctoral fellows. 17
Scientist Program SCI SCIENTIST PROGRAM Multiple types of opportunities for researchers at all career levels. SENIOR SCIENCE MANAGERS At NASA s request, the institute finds candidates to fill limited-term senior management and scientist positions at NASA Centers. AEROSPACE MEDICINE RESIDENCY The Clinical Research Opportunities in Space Medicine (CROSM) program provides research and training opportunities to the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) Aerospace Medicine residents. 18
Supporting Programs SP SUPPORTING PROGRAM Educational and outreach activities aimed at growing our community of researchers RADIATION SUMMER SCHOOL The NASA Space Radiation Summer School had a successful run with 16 students last summer but due to HRP s direction, will not be repeated this year. RED RISK SCHOOL The Red Risk School is designed to fill a new need how do people who are new-to-nasa learn about NASA s priorities? Aimed at investigators from academia, clinics & companies who may be working on useful solutions for HRP Risks, and will teach them about those risks, so that they can develop projects & deliverables that will be useful to NASA. We ll gather content experts from NASA and the broader community of spaceflight researchers and effectively inform potential TRISH proposers regarding the challenges and high priority risks to crew health and performance present in the spaceflight environment. 19
Supporting Programs SP SUPPORTING PROGRAM Exploring the leading edge of clinical practice and technical capability. WEBINARS Tech Exploration in Space Health Series is a carefully curated webinar series designed to foster lively conversation among our virtual community. We ll present potentially-transformative, sometimes controversial topics for discussion. Last week, Dr. J. Varon told us how temperature reduction can be used to protect the brain in critical situations, as early as during an ambulance ride. WORKSHOPS coming soon! Workshops to explore new ideas for potential spaceflight applications are in the planning stages. Unlike traditional workshops that require expensive and time-consuming travel, we ll be leaning heavily on our virtual tools this will permit greater participation at lower costs. 20
