1 Ministry of Education Summary of Practice Professional Learning and Development Accreditation v1.2 Professional Learning and Development Accreditation The following summary of practice provides a personal profile and a summary of your expertise. Personal Profile First name and Surname Your iwi (optional) Personal statement (optional) Eljon Fitzgerald Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga, Ngāti Kahungunu, Rangitāne, Tuwharetoa Frances Goulton and I established Aronui Ltd in 2003 primarily to assist growth and development of the Māori medium education sector. Over the past eleven years Aronui Ltd has made significant contributions across the sector and continues to do so. Our philosophy is Ki te tautoko awhina te iwi ki te tiki i te kete aronui. Professional Learning and Development Overview Please describe the area(s) of specialist professional learning and development expertise you have in relation to quality teaching practices. Leadership (Māori medium) as a co-writer of the Ministry Policy document Tū Rangatira Māori Medium Education Leadership I have worked with principals, boards of trustees, senior and beginning teachers and community groups to implement positive and effective quality teaching in kura through implementation of and PLD concerning Tū Rangatira. Teacher induction and retention (Māori medium) inducting and growing beginning teachers into effective and sucessful educators is a piority for the Māori medium sector, too many beginning teachers are failing to acheive registration and leaving the sector. Aronui Ltd is spearheading a Massey University project to trial a programme to intervene and turn this situation around. I have personally led the innovation, conceptual development and helped to shape the PLD for a pilot programme currently being delivered to kura in the central North Island and on the East Coast. Governance Training (Māori medium) - as a past board of trustees chairperson and then secretary, I have an intimate knowledge of governance matters and experience dealing with a comprehensive suite of leadership, strategic planning, conflict resolution, performance appraisal, school whānau and community engagement, curriculum development and oversight of school management, teaching and learning. Decisions around quality teaching practice are impacted by good governance and I have a expertise in this area having led a dysfunctional board and school from imminent closure to being a model school for others, with a glowing ERO report, in the space of a three year term as board chairperson. Throughout this period I facilitated professional development at various levels including board, principal, kaiako and amongst whānau. Whānaungatanga Tangata Whenuatanga (Māori medium) I currently lead a Te Taura Whiri i te Reo funded project concerned with reviving te reo Māori unique to te Taitokerau. The project aims to normalise
2 dialect unique to iwi and hapū and integrate the use of these kupu, rerenga kōrero, kīwaha me ngā ingoa into kainga, kura and mainstream schools across te Taitokerau.
