2 About the Department: The Department of Commerce, set up in 1967, has the legitimate claim and pride of being the premier institution in India for course curriculum development, teaching and researches in Commerce discipline.it has imbibed the DSE tradition of exploring new frontiers of knowledge and innovation in academics. In its history spanning over four decades, it has redefined commerce education in the country through its renowned and dedicated faculty. In addition to M. Phil., Ph.D. and the flagship M.Com. Programme, it also initiated two new post-graduate professional programmes - Master of International Business (MIB) and Master of Human Resource and Organizational Development (MHROD) in 1995 as a response to market imperatives. About the Convention: ABOUT THE THEME: LEVERAGING BUSINESS: DISCOVERING NEW HORIZONS" History is rife with examples depicting the juggle between the good times and the tough times. The silhouette of Renaissance carried inside it the colors of Crusade. While Industrial Revolution gave to the world a completely new philosophy to swear by, the Great Depression had a starkly contrasting story to tell. The idea, however, remained the same that good time preceded/cradled the tough ones and vice-versa. From the outside, man was deemed the ultimate doer. Yet, on the inside, the dynamism that is characteristic of the quest for more pushed the system towards the inevitable. It all became a grand cycle, with mankind as its axis. The same perpetual cycle of change and dynamism finds its apt manifestation in global business environment of today. Businesses have come a long way in establishing themselves as the symbol of material anchor that society can hold on to. The corporate Excalibur seeks to cut through the dogmas and taboos that are both monolithic and encompassing. As the world economy tries to find its way towards a sustainable future, the role of business entities has become more than indispensable in driving growth and creating opportunities. Reaching next level calls for initiative and innovation to be able to foresee the future that is not yet. Businesses today have to move out of their comfort zone to explore boundaries hitherto untouched. The call for broadening business perspectives is gaining momentum so that optimum utilization of resources human and material happens at a focused yet sustainable way. It has become more than imperative to reach that potential of being where the ground reality meets sky high ambitions. The key is not to count laurels and be satisfied with that horizon, but to expand it!

3 Archimedes once said Give me a lever long enough and I could move the world. This statement holds true even after so many years and is relevant even in the business context.the Business environment is dynamic, uncertain and complex. Businesses have to not just beat competitors but also do it profitably. They have to leverage on the opportunities that come along with the changing and challenging environment. For this, managers of business enterprises have to keep a hawk s eye to the changes that are happening around and be the first ones to capitalize on them. This creates an inevitable need for the businesses to discover newer horizons which they can venture into for meeting the organizational goals. Convention Objectives: To discuss how managers are leveraging their businesses and venturing into new areas and modes of operations. To bring together a distinguished panel of speakers including academics from renowned Universities, management thinkers, businessmen, politicians and researchers across the world to share their views on leveraging businesses. To examine how business can be leveraged. What benefits organizations would reap once they do the same? Call for papers: Department of Commerce invites original and unpublished research papers from academicians, corporates, research scholars, and students for presentation on the sub-themes for DAY: 2 (Sunday, April 13, 2014). Selected research papers will be published in the special issue of Journal of Commerce & Business Studies and as the conference proceedings in the form of a book bearing ISBN. Only the papers presented at the convention will be considered for publication. 4 Leveraging business through use of social media Emerging issues in accounting and finance Globalization and its impact on Indian business Innovative Business Models & Organizational Change Retailing Strategies in Global and Local Markets Issues with use of technology in retailing business Best Paper Award: The full papers submitted for conference will be considered for the Best paper Award. Award will be judged on the basis of both the quality of the paper addressing conference theme and the presentation by the researcher on the day of the convention. The winner will be awarded a plaque, a certificate of recognition and prize money in cash. GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF PAPER The front page of the paper must only carry the name(s) of the author(s), affiliation(s), full postal address, id, telephone number and the title of the paper along with the technical session for which paper is to be considered. Papers must be in English, Times New Roman (12pt font size). The manuscript should not exceed 6,000 words including Tables & Figures (About 15 A4 size pages typed in 1.5 inch space) Place Tables & Figures at the end with the indication at appropriate place in the main text. Abstract not to exceed 200 words and to be submitted in the following format only: (i) Introduction (ii) Need for Study (iii) Objectives (iv) Research Methodology (v) Key findings of the study (vi) Implications of the Study (vii) 4 to5 Key words References should be in APA format Research papers submitted for the conference presentation should not be under consideration for publication. The Abstract and the Full Paper to be submitted at commerceconvention2014@gmail.com Review: Submitted abstracts/manuscripts will be subjected to a critical review. The decisions of the reviewers will be final in all respect.
