1 COMMUNITY ENGAGED SCHOLARSHIP FACULTY MINI-GRANT (Goal: Add Service-Learning as an option to a course) REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS DEADLINE: Friday, February 24, 2017 For Application Cover Page & Budget Proposal, refer to pages 5-6 AWARD AMOUNT: $4,500 per grant Applications must be submitted by 5pm to: Jen Gasang / jlgasang@sfsu.edu (scanned e-signatures are accepted) And/or Mail/In-person: SF State ICCE 1600 Holloway Ave., HSS 206 San Francisco, CA ICCE is pleased to announce the Community Engaged Scholarship Faculty Mini-Grant Awards. Funds to be allocated spring 2017 for activities to take place any time during the calendar year 2017 (March December 15, 2017) These mini-grants are to support faculty in order to incorporate Community Service Learning (CSL) components as an OPTION in courses. 1 Funds for this mini-grant program come from CSU Chancellor s Office Call to Service Initiative to support efforts that foster faculty Community Engaged Scholarship and the expansion of service-learning courses. ELIGIBILITY Awards are open to all full-time and part-time faculty members of all ranks Note: faculty members on early retirement (e.g., FERP) are not eligible. Funds will be given for the redesign of course(s) and implementation. These courses must not have received the CSL designation in previous years, OR if they are currently CSL designated courses, the faculty applicant must have not received a CSL grant in previous years for the same course. 1 Service-Learning offers students the chance to link academic study and course credit with community involvement and critical reflection. Students enrolled in a course offering a community service learning opportunity split their time between classroom instruction, service in the community, and reflection upon the service experience. Servicelearning is an instructional method that combines formal coursework with thoughtfully organized community service experiences and utilizes the service experience as a course text for both academic learning and civic learning. Service-learning courses address community-identified needs while helping students meet academic, social and civic learning goals.

2 Conflict of Interest Partnership with a community agency must not violate policies that violate University policy regarding conflicts of interest to faculty or students. Departments must commit to offer and implement this course with the CSL option minimally for two iterations within five years after the initial award. Grant Recipient Requirements: All award winners must: a. submit their revised syllabus to ICCE; b. submit their course for CSL Designation in the following academic year with the Department s approval; c. attend Grantee Workshop (date to be determined); d. attend an ICCE contract meeting where disbursement procedures will be explained and agreements will be completed; e. submit a final report of their course implementation and reflections; and f. discuss their report and recommendations regarding the development and expansion of the CSL initiative at SF State, with the relevant community at a Forum created for the purpose. SELECTION CRITERIA Grant proposals will be reviewed according to the following: Quality: Degree to which service and reflection are integrated into course curricula, and not as extra credit or a side project in the class. Community Needs/Engagement: Extent to which the service component addresses community-identified needs/issues/goals. Sustainability: Level which the course can be used as a model for successful service learning course integration in the disciplinary area proposed, as well as possible expansion of the CSL initiative across campus. Evaluation: Intention to evaluate impact and outcome of service learning as effective pedagogy. Preference will be given to applicants who have not already received the CE Scholarship Faculty Mini-Grant during the previous two semesters. IMPORTANT DATES RFP Deadline: Friday, February 24, 2017 Submit award agreement: Friday, March 10, 2017 Grantee Workshop spring 2017 Date to be determined Final Report No later than December 15, 2017 Page 2 of 6
