Build a virtual corridor Facilitate new, multi-dimensional partnerships and collaborations 2
The JPIAMR-VRI is attracting global attention The time is now! UN AMR The Call to Action event, Berlin Oct2017 Workshop AMR and Latin America, Santiago de Chile, Oct2017 Workshop on AMR Virtual Institute, Berlin, Nov2017 AB Awareness Day, Brussels, Nov2017 AMR R&D funders workshop, London, Dec2017 WHO AMR seminar, Copenhagen, Jan2018 Meeting with Danish JPIAMR members, Copenhagen, Jan2018 US mission with JPIs: CDC and NIH, Washington, Jan2018 NIFA, Washington, Jan2018 One Health Network on AMR, Brussels, Feb2018 GLOPID-R, Feb2018 JPIAMR VRI Virtual Research Institute 3
Berlin JPIAMR-VRI Workshop recommendations posted on JPIAMR website 14Feb2018 Workshop Report Act on the current momentum and start to build the JPIAMR-VRI by engaging different pillars of the Strategic Research Agenda in a step-wise manner, and focusing on the One Health Approach. Build on a clear vision and mission with defined short-medium-long goals and objectives to facilitate the planning and execution of the JPIAMR-VRI. Avoid duplication by identifying a unique niche for the JPIAMR-VRI. Build a strong IT infrastructure to facilitate information sharing and networking. Develop the website and then incorporate different AMR networks into the structure. Hold scientific consultations through a series of regional planning workshops, in diverse locations (including LMIC), to engage and survey the needs of the global community. Assess similar successful virtual networks and use their models to build the JPIAMR-VRI. Build a networking function into the JPIAMR-VRI to encourage linkages. 4
Turning the tide of AMR in Europe and beyond. Two visions, one fight JPIAMR VRI Virtual Research Institute The global research community is engaged to reduce the burden of AMR through a One Health approach.
Two complimentary missions JPIAMR Mission To join forces across nations by leading the alignment, coordination, and support to Antimicrobial Resistance One Health collaborative research and global policy activities. JPIAMR-VRI Mission Is a virtual platform to connect research networks and research performing institutes/centres to implement Antimicrobial Resistance One Health collaborative research on the JPIAMR Strategic Research Agenda priority topics by increasing knowledge, diversity, collaborations and capability. JPIAMR VRI Virtual Research Institute 6
Establish a platform to support an unprecedented level of knowledge exchange, research coordination, and sharing of resources, databases, and research results (published and unpublished) Build on and leverage existing research centres and networks, and extend the reach of JPIAMR by creating a virtual global network of multidisciplinary researchers, facilities, and infrastructures and connect them to each other in order to deploy the SRA. Goals of the JPIAMR-VRI Reduce duplication of effort and expedite progress towards reducing the global burden of AMR.
Key concrete objectives of the JPIAMR-VRI Connecting AMR researchers under the JPIAMR priority topics in a One Health approach Building capacity and strengthening capability Facilitating access to scientific information and infrastructures Global reach: Bridging geographic borders in the research community Breaking practical barriers between fields of research Increasing awareness and visibility of the AMR issue Producing scientific evidence for developing policy and guidelines 8
JPIAMR-VRI aims 1. Provide a solid scientific foundation in a One Health perspective for the development of global interventions, policies, practices and guidelines aimed at reducing the burden of AMR; 2. Develop various research plans that will become the blueprints of the development of the VRI such as but not limited to Scientific program, Training Plan, Database Plan, Data sharing Plan, Design plan, etc. 3. Create a critical mass of expertise to catalyse partnerships among funders and other stakeholders; 4. Develop a strong digital platform to facilitate scientific and technologic data harmonization and sharing (including negative results); 5. Raise awareness of the challenges and solutions associated with AMR and enlist the help of citizens around the world to mediate change; 6. Work with industry and other end-users in the human, animal and environment sectors to expedite the uptake of AMR research outcomes into practical interventions aimed at reducing the impact of AMR; 9
VRI Governance The JPIAMR-VRI is an independent entity under the JPIAMR. JPIAMR VRI Virtual Research Institute The JPIAMR-VRI is governed by the JPIAMR Management Board, driven by the JPIAMR- VRI working group (lead by Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Infection and Immunity) and supported by the JPIAMR Secretariat. It will be kept in alignment with the six pillars of the SRA. Continuous bi-directional flow of information between JPIAMR-VRI and the JPIAMR governance will allow room for it to grow and evolve. 10
JPIAMR-VRI Truly Global Actors A Dynamic Network of AMR Research Facilities One Health Approach
ADDRESSING AMR IS LARGER THAN PROVIDING COMPETITIVE RESEARCH FUNDING We need to facilitate bringing the scientific community together by providing means and resources to develop new networks, exchanges, new approaches and make the AMR field attractive to the new generation of researchers. To encourage multidisciplinary approaches and One Health approches. 12

JPIAMR-VRI Network call Develop a Plan to create a Virtual Research Institute in AMR The funded networks will focus on generating catalytic ideas and draft, among others, strategic plans/ white papers to help establish the Global Network of Networks and bring the JPIAMR-VRI to Life! Through Strategic Plans/ Research Plans that will become the blueprints for the development of the JPIAMR-VRI, ideas include, scientific program, development plan, capacity building and training strategy, database access and protocols, data sharing platform, etc. 15

JPIAMR-VRI Potential outcomes Integration of activities among networks: joint research programmes / work plans across research centres and research networks Development of exchange programmes between researchers (e.g. fellowship schemes, travel grants etc.) Networking activities (e.g. workshops) Creation of educational and training programmes (not only scientific but also on translational research and requirements for updating other skills outside the scientific framework, including business skills (in areas such as intellectual property (IP), regulatory frameworks, manufacturing policies, marketing, technology development and application, and policy development, etc.) Stocktaking of existing networks/centres/projects Facilitation of rapid responses to emerging pathogens by connecting thought leaders and content experts with industry, public health and policy makers; Development of knowledge gap analysis based upon and further enhancing the JPIAMR mapping/database of AMR research projects and research centres increasing visibility of the research performed Increase data sharing, including sharing of negative results Production of scientific evidence for developing policy and guidelines. 18
JPIAMR-VRI & Hub >> co-existence - The Global AMR R&D Hub will support evidence-based political decision-making on allocation of resources for research and development for AMR. - The Global AMR R&D Hub will encourage the One Health approach in AMR R&D promoting collaboration between initiatives from different sectors such as animal health, human health and environment - The Global AMR R&D Hub will serve policy makers and a diverse range of international stakeholders to provide a continuous information base on existing initiatives and activities in AMR R&D, to identify high-level gaps and opportunities for action. - It will seek to avoid duplication of existing initiatives, however, and will focus upon guiding macro level decision-making by governments and upstream funders, rather than more technical and scientific decisionmaking. - The Global AMR R&D Hub will work to keep the attention on AMR high on the political agenda and advocate for a continuous dialogue on R&D for AMR. 19
