15 Tips for the excellence part Objectives Do not overcrowd with objectives and show how you will achieve them. Prefer one general objective and 3/4 specific objectives. Objectives should not be a list of the activities, it should be the goals The technology Provide clear advantages of the technology straight at the beginning Compare the technology to others and how you go further. This needs to stand-out in the proposal State of the art Make references to existing EU projects with enough detail and how you plan to collaborate and build upon them The SotA is important but even more how the innovation is strong depending on the SotA Support letters for the technology should be used carefully and describe the activities of the support clearly Do not underestimate the gender perspective even for topics where usually there are no gender dimensions Do not underestimate cross-cutting issues in general

16 Tips for the impact part At the political and societal level (with indicators): Show how the project fits into the Europe 2020 strategy with its 3 priorities: smart, sustainable and inclusive growth; Its contribution to societal challenges (Pillar 3 of H2020) and key technologies (Pillar 2); How the project meets the European societal goals: quality of life, health, safety, education, gender balance; The benefit to the environment, reducing the use of resources, taking into account the analysis of the life cycle, the circular economy and eco-design, etc. ; Whether the project benefits from institutional support, regional / national / European, and show the socioeconomic impact.

17 Tips for the impact part For the economy and innovation: The gain in European competitiveness, productivity Gain in employment, the creation of start-ups, etc. Project's contribution to the optimization of existing equipment or services The project's contribution to the establishment of standards, regulations, definition of public policies; Broaden the impact: describe other possible applications in the same field, or other implications in other areas. Precise clearly who are the users of the technology and the clear advantages (is the solution easier to use, cheaper, better lifetime, ) Include them in the consortium

18 Tips for the impact part For network The project's contribution to improve knowledge of the partners (joint supervision of theses, joint organization of summer schools, conferences, etc.); How the project will continue to live after the end (and show how the sustainability of the project is realistic in terms of availability of personnel, equipment, financing, etc., pay attention to new demands of funding). At a broader level The synergy of the project with other policies, other funds from other regional, national or international programs (structural funds; adequacy with smart specialization strategy S3, etc.); Improved international cooperation (why the project is done in a European context rather than national).

19 Tips for the impact part Do not underestimate the dissemination and exploitation plan Establish a strategy and build a plan for dissemination / exploitation / Communication (If possible activities that cover a large part of the length of the project and not just the end) The valuation of the project: patenting, technology transfer, manufacturing and sale of products, services Dissemination, exploitation of results and management of intellectual property Communication needs to be detailed convincingly and target the right groups with a clear timeline

20 Tips for the implementation part The consortium Balanced consortium with complementary skills and as many as needed to carry out the work as long as it is justified International/European approach must be evident Some partners should have past collaborations Clear definition of distribution of work A good balance between academic and nonacademic partners A strong coordinator is better with experiences in EU projects A realistic budget that is reasonable, well allocated, justified adequately

21 Tips for the implementation part Ensure qualitative & quantitative deliverables (between 3 to 5 for each WP) 1-2 milestones maximum per WP The Work Package description should be harmonized Make sure that the workplan demonstrates clear dependency and logical timing between the WPs Propose a risk plan to overcome potential risks and conflicts (in management but also for the technology) In the management structure, nominate an Advisory Board for ethical and regulatory issues and exploitation activities to support the innovation process External stakeholders are important and how they will be engaged in the project

22 General advice on the writing Don t waste the time of the evaluators, follow exactly the templates as it is, to make it easier for the experts to find the information Include references to different parts in the proposal Simple language no jargon, it is not a scientific publication Be concise in the text and prefer relevant summary tables, graphs & pictures. Do not go over the page limits A well-written summary/abstract will impact strongly the opinion of the reviewers Try to minimize all drawbacks and highlight unique selling points Better to have one only author

23 How to write your abstract The one page proposal Structure of the one page proposal Work Programme Topic and reference of the call Title and Acronym Objective of the proposal Background to the proposal Why bother (what problem are you trying to solve) Is it a European Priority (could it be solved at national level) Is the solution already available Why you (have you the best consortium to undertake this work, related to the value chain of your research)

24 How to write your abstract Expected results and lead users of the results (Impact) Expected results - what will come out of the project? Who will use the results? Why do they want to use the results? What will be changed? Post project situation Phases of the work (simple numbered list) quick explanation on the methodology Organizations involved and their role in the project (lists) Expected costs and duration of the work This one page proposal should be used as a basis necessary in the preparation of any proposals. This is also a useful tool to establish contact with potential partners. The aim is to convert the one page proposal into the abstract of the proposal.
