2 together to conduct patient-oriented research and evidence-informed health care by 1) bringing innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to the point of care, and 2) ensuring greater quality, accountability and accessibility of care. ( t=25&sort=program&all=1&masterlist=true) SPOR is working to engage citizens and patients in all stages of the research process; the upcoming Café Scientifique (a discussion on health-related issues of popular interest to the general public) is being presented on October 27, 2014 at 6:00pm EDT in Ottawa. This event is an opportunity for informal interaction between the public and a dynamic panel of experts who are ready to share their unique perspectives and experiences in health research. This free event is presented by CIHR. Those who can not attend in person can view a live stream of the Café at RSVP to cafescientifique@cihr-irsc.gc.ca. Team Grant: (Pathways to Health Equity for Aboriginal People) Pathways Implementation Research Team Grants - Component 2 The Pathways Implementation Research Team (IRT) Grants support the overall goal of Pathways which is to develop a better understanding of how to design, implement and scale-up population health interventions that will improve Aboriginal health. There are four exemplars of focus: 1. Suicide Prevention 2. Diabetes/Obesity 3. Tuberculosis 4. Oral Health. An Application Process Webinar is being presented on November 5, 2014 from 12:00-1:00pm EDT. 3 The Pathways IRT Grants funding opportunity involves three components. Not all teams are required or expected to have held a Component 1 before Component 2 and/or 3, and funding will be provided according to how ready the intervention is to be scaled up. Component 1 (background): Team development grants will support research teams to identify promising or effective population health interventions and build relationships with First Nations, Inuit and/or Metis communities. CIHR launched a funding opportunity for Component 1 grants earlier in Teams can not submit the same proposal for funding in this call (Component 2), if they submitted to the Component 1 funding opportunity. Component 2: Enhancement and adaptation grants will support research teams aimed at strengthening the effectiveness or scalability of population health interventions through community-informed enhancements or adaptations, in any of the exemplar areas. Component 3: Scalability grants will support research teams to study the scale-up of promising population health interventions across heterogeneous communities and contexts. The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are: 1. to strengthen the effectiveness or scalability of interventions in the four exemplar areas through community informed enhancements or adaptations using an implementation science approach; and 2. to support teams to study the enhancement and/or adaptation, and scale-up of population health interventions across at least 4 diverse communities. The maximum grant is $225,000/year for up to 3 years. A minimum of $75,000/year for up to 3 years must be supported by applicant partners. Up to 10 Development Grants of $5,000 will be offered, if requested, to successful applications at the Letter of Intent stage to fund two team members (nominated principal applicant and a community partner) to participate in a two-day workshop on March 24-25, Requests for up to $10,000 of development funds will be considered for applicants traveling from rural and remote locations and with appropriate justification. This funding opportunity has a two-step application process: the Letter of Intent and the invited full Application. The CIHR Letter of Intent deadline is November 26, Only Letters of Intent that have passed the initial screening process will be invited to submit a full Application by September 15, Page 3

Examples of activities that might be conducted under this funding opportunity (but are not restricted to) are: 1. planning and execution of pilot projects or feasibility studies to generate preliminary data, proof of concept; 2. development and/or validation of new tools, methodologies and/or protocols; 3. develop critical steps in the research needed to deliver research results. The specific objectives are to: promote and increase capacity in innovative and cost-effective trial designs; and stimulate researchers from various backgrounds to explore new methodologies. The maximum grant is $100,000 for 1 year. The CIHR application deadline is January 9, t=25&sort=program&all=1&masterlist=true Open Operating Grant: Transitional Operating Grant: The CIHR Open Operating Grant Program (OOGP) is the largest of the open calls for proposals. The OOGP is flexible, in that there are: 1. no specific requirements in relation to team size or team composition; and Page 4
5 2. no specific requirements or restrictions on the specific research activities to be undertaken. The OOGP is open to applications in all areas of health research that are aligned with the CIHR mandate. The OOGP is expected to: support original and high quality projects or teams/programs of research; support individual researchers and groups of researchers; support research in all areas and disciplines with relevance to health; contribute to the creation and use of health-related knowledge; contribute to the dissemination, commercialization/knowledge translation and use of healthrelated knowledge; develop and maintain Canadian health research capacity, including research training. Of note, for the Transitional Operating Grant competition, Principal Applicants must not have submitted a Stage 2 Application as a Program Leader to the Foundation Scheme st Live Pilot competition. For large grants, $12.5 million is available over the multi-year terms of the grant. This funding opportunity has a two-step application process: the registration and the full Application. The CIHR registration deadline is January 9, 2015; the full Application deadline is March 2, t=25&sort=program&all=1&masterlist=true Operating Grant: New Investigator Research Grants in Child and Youth Health (2014) The New Investigator Research Grants in Child and Youth Health funding opportunity is a jointly sponsored program of SickKids Foundation and the CIHR Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health. The grants provide important early career development support to child health researchers in biomedical, clinical, health systems and services, population and public health sectors. For the purpose of this competition, the SickKids Foundation defines a new investigator as an individual who as a principal or co-principal investigator has not received combined operating grant funding of $500,000 or more (Canadian dollars), and is within five years of their first academic appointment. Applicants are expected to work with a mentor to receive the support and guidance that will yield the Page 5
6 best possible research. The maximum grant is $100,000 per annum for up to 3 years. The SickKids Foundation application deadline is January 20, Websites: t=25&sort=program&all=1&masterlist=true and The Canadian Association for HIV Research (CAHR) and the CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Initiative New HIV Researcher Workshop Registration is now open for the Fall 2014 New HIV Researcher Workshop on November 14, 2014 in Edmonton. The workshop is held in partnership with the CAHR Vaccine Initiative Alliance Coordinating Office and the CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Initiative. Cost: Registration for the workshop is $50 which includes all workshop materials, food throughout the day, as well as an off-site dinner. Travel awards will be offered to participants traveling to the workshop.
