1 Research Office for Administration, Development and Support (ROADS) CIHR Webinars and Funding Opportunities September 27, 2013 Issue Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR): SPOR Foundations of Integrated Health Care Innovations Network Information Webinar October 1, 2013 CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research and CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health: New Investigator Salary Awards and Applied Public Health Chairs Information Webinar October 2, 2013 Chair: Applied Public Health Letter of Intent deadline October 30, 2013 New Investigator Salary Award: Application deadline December 2, 2013 (notify ROADS of your intent to apply as soon as possible) Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR): SPOR Foundations of Integrated Health Care Innovations Network Information Webinar CIHR is pleased to pre-announce the SPOR Foundations of Integrated Health Care Innovations Network. The SPOR Foundations of Integrated Health Care Innovations Network is a key initiative of SPOR ( and is led in partnership with CIHR's Institutes of Population and Public Health, Health Services and Policy Research, Aging, Human Development, Child and Youth Health and in collaboration with the Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes. The SPOR Foundations of Integrated Health Care Innovations Network is a network of networks that builds on provincial, territorial, federal networks and national assets in integrated health care. The Network will: foster a new alliance between research, policy and practice to create dynamic and responsive learning networks; develop, evaluate and scale up new approaches in the delivery of integrated and cost-effective services across and beyond sectors of health care; and Page 1
2 contribute to improved clinical, population health, health equity and health system outcomes. The Network combines essential elements of the Signature Initiative in Community-based Primary Health Care (CBPHC) and the Signature Initiative in Integrated Research and Health Services (in development). The Network s priority focus is on integrated health service delivery, while building on foundations in CBPHC research and service delivery models. The Network will initially focus on new approaches to the delivery of integrated health care both horizontally and vertically across the care continuum (including prevention, primary health care, acute care, tertiary care, home and long-term care) and other sectors that affect health (housing, education, social services), for high system users with complex care needs (including older adults with multiple chronic conditions) and for children. Additional information regarding a SPOR Network can be found at Webinar(s): The Institute co-leads are hosting a series of information webinars regarding the Network. The first webinar is scheduled October 1, 2013 from 11:00am to 12:00pm (EDT). Register now or select: Please contact Meghan McMahon, Assistant Director, CIHR-Institute of Health Services and Policy Research at mmcmahon.ihspr@mcgill.ca or Erica Di Ruggiero, Associate Director, CIHR-Institute of Population and Public Health at e.diruggiero@utoronto.ca for additional information regarding the Network, and how it relates to the Signature Initiative in CBPHC. A Network Development Grants competition will be launched this Fall to help interested provincial, territorial, federal and jurisdictional networks prepare for success. The official announcement is to follow. CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research and CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health: New Investigator Salary Awards and Applied Public Health Chairs Information Webinar CIHR s Institutes of Health Services and Policy Research and of Population and Public Health are funding New Investigator Salary Awards and Applied Public Health Chairs through the Signature Initiative in Community-based Primary Health Care (CBPHC). Additional information regarding CBPHC can be found at The CBPHC Signature Initiative is dedicated to supporting the training, mentoring and career progression of trainees and scientists dedicated to CBPHC research. To this end, the purpose of the New Investigator Salary Award and Applied Public Health Chair funding opportunities is to support Page 2
3 highly rated applications in the area of CBPHC, that have a primary focus on innovative models for chronic disease prevention and management in CBPHC and/or improving access to appropriate CBPHC for vulnerable populations. Eligibility: A New Investigator is defined as a researcher who has held a full time research appointment for a period of 0 to 60 months as of the competition deadline. Please review the full announcement below. An Applied Public Health Chair is defined as a mid-career population and public health researcher with 6 to 12 years of experience past their last qualifying degree at the time of application. Please review the full announcement below. Webinar: A CBPHC information webinar is scheduled October 2, 2013 from 1:30pm to 2:30pm (EDT) to detail the New Investigator Salary Award and Applied Public Health Chair in CBPHC funding opportunities. Please register online or select: The presentation will be in English, followed by a bilingual Q&A period. Slides will be available in both languages following the webinar. Please contact Emma Cohen at ecohen@uottawa.ca for additional details regarding the webinar. Chair: Applied Public Health The CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH) and the Public Health Agency of Canada are re-launching the Applied Public Health Chairs Program. The Program will target specific population and public health research priorities that align with other strategic initiatives (e.g., CIHR Signature Initiatives, partner priorities, evidence needs of policy makers) to maximize synergies and impact. The specific objectives are: to support high quality programs of population health intervention research that contribute to new knowledge to improve health and health equity across the life course (a program of research outlines multiple research projects that are conceptually linked and implemented over several years, based on an analysis of gaps in current knowledge in the field, especially gaps of importance to knowledge users engaged in relevant policies and programs in public health and other sectors); to stimulate the application of innovative theories, methods and approaches in research and knowledge translation that promote reciprocal learning within and between countries (this includes low-, middle- and/or high-income countries; Page 3
4 to catalyze interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral collaborations between researchers and knowledge users that contribute to evidence-informed decision-making and use of knowledge by public health and other sectors; and to mentor the current and next generation of population and public health researchers (in particular post-doctoral fellows and early career researchers), practitioners and policy makers from a range of disciplines and sectors. The CIHR IPPH and the Public Health Agency of Canada in partnership with the CIHR-Institutes of Aging; Gender and Health; Health Services and Policy Research; Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis; Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction; Alberta Innovates Health Solutions; the Fonds de recherche du Québec Santé; and the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation will provide funding for applications that are determined to be relevant to one or more of the following research areas: All applications must focus on programs of population health intervention research to promote health and health equity. Population health interventions can include policy, programmatic and resource distribution approaches. These interventions are often complex and operate within and outside of the health sector (e.g., education, housing, built environment). Additional research areas of interest to the partners are: Community-Based Primary Health Care Pathways to Health Equity for Aboriginal Peoples Environments and Health Population and Public Health Economics Boys and Men s Health Mental Health Promotion across the Life Course with a Focus on Children, Youth and Families Healthy Aging Healthy Weights E-Health Innovations Details regarding the additional research areas of interest can be found at t=25&sort=program&all=1&masterlist=true#objective. Eligibility: For your application to be eligible: 1. The Nominated Principal Applicant must be an independent researcher. 2. The Nominated Principal Applicant must be appointed at an eligible institution. Institutional Eligibility Requirements can be found at 3.
