2 Pre-Conference Workshop Selections: Please indicate the workshop(s) you will attend if your registration type includes workshops: (NOTE: workshops are an additional registration fee) SUNDAY FULL-DAY: 8:30am-5:00pm Selected Title Description A Journey from Proposal Development to Post Award Administration Success as a department research administrator can be difficult if you do not know the basics of research administration inside and out. The day-to-day processes of research administration can be overwhelming and trying to stay on course is challenging. If you do not have the tools to get your job done efficiently, your ability to stay focused can be impeded. If you are in need of a guidance or believe there has to be a better direction to understanding funding mechanisms, proposal development, uniform guidance, sponsor requirements, award administration, financial management, and closeouts, then this workshop is for you. Join us as we map out the things that a departmental research administrator needs to know and how to steer clear from things that could derail your success. SUNDAY HALF-DAY MORNING: 8:30am-Noon Selected Title Description Pre-Award Basics As research administrators, we play a key supportive role in assisting principal investigators to navigate their research projects through the various phases in the sponsored projects lifecycle. The pre-award phase of the lifecycle encompasses the development, institutional review and submission of proposals to external sponsors, as well as the negotiation and acceptance of sponsored research awards. Throughout the pre-award phase, research administrators are consistently challenged with ever changing rules and regulations related to a countless number of topics, including proposal submission, conflict of interest, use of animals in research, and export controls, just to name a few. In this workshop, we will investigate the general regulations governing sponsored research and how to apply them in the context of case studies. We will also explore many of the key pre-award processes, as well as examine key compliance areas that affect sponsored research during the pre-award phase of the sponsored projects lifecycle. 2

3 Part 1: Subawards & Subrecipient Monitoring: The Basics and Beyond This workshop will explore the full cycle of subawards and subrecipient monitoring, a complex, shared responsibility that begins at the time of proposal development and extends throughout the life of the subaward. This workshop will focus on sharing tips, strategies and practical guidance, and is designed to introduce the topic to newcomers, as well as provide comprehensive tools to more experienced research administrators. It will cover the full scope of responsibilities from departmental administrator and central office perspectives. Through discussions, case studies and exercises, participants will learn about the subrecipient monitoring requirements under the Uniform Guidance and work through implementation strategies, approaches and solutions in the area of pre-award risk analysis and preparing for subaward issuance. Effective Presentations NCURA Style Allowability, My Dear Watson: The Case of the Cost Determination Compliance Basics 101 (IRB, IACUC, IBC, COI) Do you ever get a crick in your neck from turning to read your slides to the audience? Do people get fidgety or even nod off when you re presenting? Are your Q&A sessions met with deadly silence? This workshop is designed to help you avoid these problems by giving you the tools you need to develop engaging content-rich, audience-specific presentations that your thankful attendees will applaud (really!). In this case study session, we will investigate the challenges of costing determinations by following the trail of clues from the funding announcement through the award documents. Armed with our cost principles, terms and conditions, and sleuthing skills, we will break down the process of determining allowable costs. We will also brainstorm methods of collecting information, communicating with project staff, and improving the process. Are you new to the world of compliance and looking to understand the basics? This workshop will provide an introduction to the primary areas of the compliance landscape: Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Biosafety (IBC), and Conflicts of Interest (COIs). The interactive workshop will include case studies, discussions, lessons learned and exercises to help understand the regulations governing these areas that are the cornerstones of non-financial compliance. 3

4 SUNDAY HALF-DAY AFTERNOON: 1:30pm-5pm Selected Title Description Post-Award Basics This workshop will focus on the daily operations of a Post Award Financial Administrator and managing the many facets of sponsored projects. Discussion will focus on invoicing and collections issues as well as managing overspending on sponsored projects, cost transfers, and reasonable, allowable and allocable costs. You will learn how to prepare for a review or audit of these same issues and much more. Come join us for a lively discussion on the challenges and lessons learned. This workshop will cover the area of risk mitigation through contracting, and take a deep dive into the area of subrecipient monitoring once the subaward has been issued. Effective Management Practices Almost anyone can be a manager, but how can you use and develop your skills to be most effective? This workshop will focus on some fundamental management strategies, such as: knowing your own strengths, hiring the right people, performance management, managing resources within the constraints of your environment, and maintaining positive employee engagement Participants will be able to engage in several different management scenarios to better understand there isn t just one right answer to effectively managing a team. This workshop is geared toward participants who are relatively new (0-5 years) to managing a team. Clinical Trials (Lifecycle Approach) Free the Data! Breaking Down Barriers and Driving Organizational Change Presenters will provide an introduction to clinical trial agreements and coverage analysis by discussing the major points of clinical trials agreements in a sponsor initiated and PI initiated clinical trials, what a coverage analysis is in the context of a clinical trial, regardless of funding source; what s needed to conduct a coverage analysis, and how to document the analysis. The workshop will allow participants to discuss best practices for negotiating clinical trial agreements and performing a coverage analysis by engaging in interactive learning exercise and discussion. Got data access? In this workshop you will develop a plan of attack from multiple angles to drive change and let data flow within your organization. Lean how to work with key players, data owners, manage roadblocks and get your organization to a point where the data is freed. Walk out with an actionable plan you can implement. 4
