2 Contest Background In celebration of International Education Week 2013, Alberta s Ministry of Education, in partnership with the Ministry of International and Intergovernmental Relations, invites Alberta students in Kindergarten to Grade 12 to participate in the Think Globally Art Contest which will allow students to reflect on Alberta and promote its vibrant, diverse, and innovative qualities to the rest of the world. Share Alberta s stories to further develop understanding and connectedness with the global community! How will top selected student artwork be recognized? artwork will be displayed in the Alberta Legislature Building during Education Week (May 5 9, 2014); artwork will be displayed in Alberta s international offices; artwork may be presented as gifts to visiting foreign delegates by the Government of Alberta; Alberta schools that submit the most student entries will be awarded with a session, facilitated by the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation (ACGC), on international development and opportunities to get involved. Overview of Contest Criteria (Note: official contest criteria and rules are at the end of the Guide) Contest participants must submit artwork that: is in colour is 11 x17 (23 cm x 43 cm) in dimension is accompanied by a completed Declaration and Official Entry Form is not computer-generated art utilizes any art media, for example, paint, pastels, etc, except three dimensional supplies illustrates one of the following six themes: 1. Rural/urban life in Alberta 4. Famous Alberta figures 2. Alberta landscapes/resources 5. Cultures and communities in Alberta 3. Alberta history 6. Sports in Alberta *Note: Artwork will be evaluated using the following criteria: general evaluation, compliance with one of the above mentioned themes, clarity of message, creativity, composition of colours, and originality. Contest Information Contest participants will be evaluated in the following four grade categories: - Kindergarten-Grade 3 - Grades Grades Grades One contest winner and one honourable mention will be selected from each grade category and awarded a prize package. Winning artwork entries will be displayed in the Alberta Legislature Building during Education Week in May 2014 and in Alberta s international offices. Top selected artwork may also be presented to visiting foreign delegations by the Government of Alberta. To enter a submission in the contest, entrants must complete and submit the Declaration and Official Entry Form (found at the end of the Guide). I acknowledge and agree that the Artwork submitted by me for the purposes of the Contest becomes the sole property of the Government of Alberta, including ownership of all copyright therein. 3. I agree to irrevocably and unconditionally waive in whole my moral rights in respect of the Artwork and declare that this waiver shall operate in favour of the Government of Alberta and its assignees and licensees. 4. I verify that the Artwork is my original work. 5. Any personal information about me collected for the purposes of the Contest will be stored and used only in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (Alberta). 6. I consent to my personal information and artwork set out in the Official Entry Form to be publicly disclosed in whole or in part for the purpose of publicizing the Contest. 6 Think Globally Art Contest Contest Rules (the "Rules") Eligibility: 1. Except for Government of Alberta employees and their immediate family members, this contest is open to all youth residing in Alberta, and studying in Kindergarten to Grade Artwork submissions must be unpublished and original entries. Entry Information: 3. All entries must be original designs that have not been published previously. All participants undertake not to copy or reproduce works, symbols or logos, in whole or in part, that are the property of third parties. 4. Multiple entries will not be accepted. 5. Entrants may use any art media, for example, paint, pastels, etc, except three-dimensional supplies. 6. Computer-generated art is not permitted. 7. Words and numbers may be included in the artwork but only make up 15% of the composition. 8. Artwork will be evaluated using the following criteria: general evaluation, compliance with the contest s six outlined themes, clarity of message, composition of colours, and originality. 9. Artwork submissions must be received by the Government of Alberta by January 22, 2014, 4:30 p.m. MST. Artwork submissions must include the required, completed Declaration and Official Entry Form. 11. If any copyright or permissions, licenses, clearances, releases, waivers of moral rights and approvals were obtained, please enclose these with your artwork entry. The Government of Alberta is not responsible for entries which are delayed, lost, misdirected, incomplete, damaged or destroyed. Any entry that is tampered with, unreadable or mutilated will not be accepted. 12. If you require confirmation that the Government of Alberta has received and accepted your entry, include your address on the completed entry form. The Government of Alberta will try to advise you that your entry was received. 13. For the purpose of these Rules, each artwork submission accompanied by a properly completed Declaration and Official Entry Form shall be considered a valid entry. 14. These Rules may be changed without notice or reason including, if necessary, to comply with any applicable law. By entering this Contest, Entrants agree to abide by these rules and acknowledge that the Government of Alberta shall not be responsible for any damages, costs, demands, claims or losses of any kind, incurred by any party as a result of participation in the Think Globally Art Contest.

Any false information provided within the context of the Contest by any Entrant concerning information provided in the Official Entry Form, ownership of right or non-compliance with the rules or the like may result in the immediate elimination of the Entrant from the Contest. 16. This Contest shall be governed by and construed in accordance with these Rules, the laws of the Province of Alberta and any applicable federal laws. These Rules govern all aspects of the Contest and are binding on all Entrants and all other parties including parents and legal guardians, who sign the Declaration or Official Entry Form. General Information: 17. Contest entries will be evaluated in the following four grade categories: Kindergarten-Grade 3; Grades 4-6; Grades 7-9; and Grades Contest entries will be evaluated on the following six themes: Rural/urban life in Alberta; Famous Alberta figures; Alberta landscapes/resources; Cultures and communities in Alberta; Alberta history; and Sports in Alberta. 19. The Government of Alberta may contact Entrants of winning entries to obtain a photograph of the Entrant, without further compensation, for use in any Government of Alberta advertisement, publication or promotion, for general news or other information purposes. 20. The chances of winning a prize depend on the total number and quality of eligible entries received prior to the closing date. 21. The Government of Alberta reserves the right to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest for any reason, without any prior notice to any Entrant. Selection of Awards: 22. All incoming entries will be judged by a panel of judges chosen by the Government of Alberta. 23. Decisions on all matters relating to the Contest are final and not open to dispute. 24. Entries will be judged on general evaluation, compliance with the six outlined themes, clarity of message, composition of colours, and originality. 25. Each Entrant who has submitted a winning entry will be notified by telephone or that their entry has won and informed of the procedure to follow to claim the applicable prize. If an Entrant declines the prize, the prize may be forfeited and awarded to another. 26. If the Government of Alberta does not receive entries of sufficient quantity or quality, the Government of Alberta reserves the right not to award any prizes. 27. Top selected artwork will be displayed in the Alberta Legislature Building during Education Week (May 5-9, 2014). Artwork will also be displayed in Alberta s international offices.
