1. This is a pretty good program, but far too limited in the kinds of things that need to be done after the initial R&D stage. Not nearly enough room for larger scale prototypes and pilot plants. 2. SR&ED is not a "grant", and it is not an "investment tax credit". Words matter. 3. Documentation & Business plan bs and networking with other competitor companies getting politics is not the solution for SME capital access. Invest in the right Business tech talented companies directly funded one to one, no community or society or institutional management crap influencing or religious craps talking about sharing or resource selling before the company gets invested. 4. Prefer to contract out 5. Had research expenditures that qualified but was unaware of the program. Now past cutoff date.
Q2. To what industry (s) did your SR&ED grant application(s) apply
Q3. 1. There are some pretty good things with this program, but it does require a profitable taxable corporation to actually utilize it. 2. SR&ED forms part of a larger set of supports for innovation. 3. abctech is the broker & referral NGO company who will not decide the SME capital investment, instead all the SME in the CIty will be assessed based on the direct influencing with B2B business owners in the capacity of Business tech or solution development or management strategies level of interaction with the clients. Highly influencing company will be voted by the owners, diplomats, economist not by their employees, politician or sales reps or agents or wandering woolys to influence any SME with greatest capacity. 4. Excellent program that needs some refinement 5. This may be another pick the winner program 6. provides client assistance but did not see it motivating efforts 7. The procedures are difficult to follow. 8. My company has not benefited from the program as yet. Hope to do so in the future. 9. too much accounting minutae 10. A lot more of the expenses could be included in the calculation of the credit. 11. Pre-approval for SR&ED would be helpful for companies. 12. Overall the process works well. 13. Innovation is very expensive, especially in emerging technology sectors. The community (the country) reaps the primary benefits of successful innovation through high-paying jobs, buildings/facilities, enhanced tax base, a receptor capacity for university and college graduates, essentially WEALTH-generation to secure our future. As such, the "community" needs to share in the risk and rewards of innovation. SR&ED in Alberta, with few other exceptions, has been the sole participation of the Alberta community in innovation by entrepreneurs and SMEs, and even as such, the entrepreneur/sme has to invest over $10 of Eligible expenditures, and mostly in Alberta, before perhaps, maybe, recover $1 through the SR&ED program. The question should be, given the obvious leverage and benefit to the "community", why is it still at 10% recovery of Eligible expenditures ma
Q4. Q4. 1. The fundamental problem with all these issues is that we simply have far too many anemic corporations that have seriously injured with globalization and free trade agreements. This is the primary risk, NOT the actual risk of getting a successful technical outcome. Even when you success, you will fail at the business level, because there is no significant protection from globalized predation that today are operated by large international banks that prey on small and medium sized companies before they can fully develop. 2. Reduces capital requirements to create new innovations. 3. Not easily accessible, this has to be directly deal with One single ethical finance management person to deal with the SME's one by one, No group of people to be involved in decision making that s where you have all types of politics which will not allow any productive company to be productive 4. May have to be enrichened to keep companies in Alberta 5. For some companies 6. Any financial assistance helps. 7. If a project is approved, the money is nice, but it does not solve the real problem - access to growth capital. 8. Too difficult to qualify 9. This is pretty much the only reward for building businesses in Alberta. 10. Maybe* getting the cash back 12 months after it is spent is much less incentive then knowing you'll get it back and getting it back in a shorter time frame 11. Good for help funding startups. 12. Unless the high cost of innovation is commensurately shared amongst those that benefit from innovation, there will be little innovation and little new Wealth-generation. Right now for every $10 invested in innovation, the entrepreneur/sme covers $9 and the "community (GoA") covers $1. SR&ED is clearly useful but not a commensurate sharing of the risks, yet 90% of the rewards accruing to the Community who only cover ~10% of the costs. Such imbalance is not sustainable and part of the reason why our province has a dismal record on Innovation and Diversification that is closer to a third world jurisdiction than a G7 modern economy. 13. We have leveraged this program to attract foreign investment.
Q5. 1. No, there are all together too many examples in Canada of technically successful companies that have been ruined in the globalized Free Trade environment. My best technical advice is to NOT EVEN START IN CANADA, but instead cast ones nets widely and get in on the ground floor in a more idea friendly locale. 1. Too many years ago 2. Yes, being done through my Industry Association. 3. garyg@deltatee.com
Q6. 1. I have I have learned the hard way that just because you have good technical ideas, it does not follow that you will be successful in the business side. There is far too much predation that prevent the proper growth of Canadian owned and controlled corporations. The corrupted political class, mostly in Ottawa, have created this result, and there is now no turning back from the real consequences. 2. Custom Ecommerce Solution to Retail / Wholesale & Manufacturing, EHR fully integrated paper less architecture, Clean tech ecommerce solution if any to explore! 3. My company is not an investor, except in itself. This is true of most technology companies. 4. Solar Power Projects 5. Construction, new engineering technology 6. Now retired, but glad to see the program. 7. Why is an advanced material nanotechnology, or a sensor company selling to the oil/gas industry not included? 8. Strongly suggest a broader definition of any company that is knowledge-based qualifies, and at the very least, has to include global emerging sectors. 9. Why is it limited to these technologies?
Q7. 1. I am not currently employed by a company. 2. There are extremely limited range of opportunities left in Alberta and Canada that are still good candidates for both investments and innovation. Most good people with good ideas should be encouraged to move to much more receptive locations, such as California, Michigan and Southern Ontario even. 3. I am the only custom ecommerce provider for unlimited product setup, Custom business process in certain industry & Powerful Ecommerce SEO & Management marketing strategic solution 4. My company is not an investor. Unlike SR&ED, this program targets investors, not innovative companies. 5. Based on strategy for company growth 6. Grants for SolarPower projects 7. I don't have enough personal wealth to invest substantially and the exempt market rules are too restrictive. I'm eligible not accredited. 8. Retired. 9. (1) apply for investment eligibility; and (2) invest in smaller companies.
Q8. 1. I am interested in innovations in residential housing, but the building codes in Alberta and the regulatory regime actually create an insurmountable burden, i.e. Saskatchewan is vastly superior to try these kinds of innovative approaches. 2. Ecommerce solution for retail, wholesale & manufacturing 3. This is a past interest. I am now retired from investing. 4. This only allows 1 box to check. I invest in different industries. 5. I am not an investor. 6. Nanotechnology 7. Plus other emerging technology sectors such as Nanotechnology.
Q9. Q If and how small investors can benefit from it. 2. Nothing. I have a great deal of sympathy for Ms. Notley's government that has to clean up four decades of terminal stupidity and greed, because anyone seriously looking at starting something here has a four decade handicap. 3. procedure to get the capital 4. This program has the potential to increase the damage done to the Alberta innovative sector by exit-oriented investing. That is, this program may increase the export of Alberta technology companies. Is this point understood and has it been considered? 5. Does this apply to public or private companies? Can you apply based on your stock, ETF or mutual fund investments? 6. If there is a credit, where will the money come from to balance payments? 7. Construction, real estate, technology
Q10. Continued 8. How beneficial is the tax credit? 9. Details, application process, grant writing for this 10. How does a person go about the application process 11. The procedures, so I can advise clients 12. Does the cash have to be spent in Alberta? 13. When can I apply for it in 2017? How much I can benefit for it? 14. The application process and the details. 15. Are private individual investors eligible or just companies? If just companies will there be any restrictions on which kind of companies are eligible? 16. I will read online 17. The structure. Why only $90M over two years? The investments into Alberta companies will be spent heavily in the province and taxed extensively. The net cost to Treasury is likely trivial, why not increase the maximum to say a net to Treasury of $90M over two years rather than a total invested $90M. RRSP investment eligibility. Years that the investment needs to be locked in. Limits for individual investors. Limits for corporate investors. Limits on maximum that can be raised by any one company. 18. Why are they limiting the type of technologies that are allowed. 19. Investee company eligibility criteria.
Q It s not worth the time and expense. 2. No seminar is need for this simple capital finance investment with a very simple concept of giving money to SME. If you provide necessary procedures with the Office contact information then entrepreneurs will get it done. 3. Local, content, timing, cost 4. When? 5. Depends on timing 6. If in Calgary 7. on how much of the population is expected to utilize it 8. If I am in Edmonton. 9. On the AGENDA 10. If available. 11. Timing and cost 12. On how useful and long it might be.
Q12. 1 The best kind of seminar you SHOULD generate for interested investors as innovators, is to help them export their efforts to better locations with less toxic socio-economic trade policies. 2. Grande Prairie 3. Edmonton or Red Deer 4. Red Deer to encourage participation from both cities. 5. On line
Now ABOUT YOU Q13. Q Cold Lake & Ft. McMurray 2. Now Alberta 3. All 1. Any commodity based businesses in retail, wholesale or manufacturing 2. Water utilities 3. Carbon credits 4. Nanotechnology - advanced materials
