1 SVLPOA Wolf Creek Rd. - Clearlake Oaks, CA Newsletter online at: January 2019 EDITION WOLF CREEK FIREWISE COMMUNITY The Wolf Creek Firewise program has been accepted by the federal program. There are now seven Firewise programs in Lake County, and five more are being reviewed for acceptance. Hopefully, this will give us a larger voice in the fire protection community. We are currently working on a CalFire grant application to assist in clearing the sides of Long Valley Road for a safer evacuation route. Firewise volunteers have been working to help residents with the following projects: Clearing and maintaining properties with overgrowth of vegetation to reduce fire fuel. Cut trees down that are dead/dying due to drought and beetle infestation, further reducing fire fuel. This is an on-going issue as trees continue to die. Removing brush and clearing fire breaks on common areas/greenbelt around Wolf Creek that abut homeowners properties Educating homeowners about defensible space, doing work to clear properties winter, spring, early summer and late fall when safe to do so (not in high fire-season). Our monthly meetings are on the first Saturday of each month. After the meeting we gather for various short work projects. Come join us to ask for our help or to help us plan how to make our area safer for everyone. Our next meeting is January 5, 2019, at the Community Center at 10 A.M. See you there!! 2 AROUND THE VALLEY SPRING VALLEY NEWS Thank you to all 80 people that turned out for the December Breakfast. Thanks to our great cooks, our ever faithful servers, our cute coffee servers, our dishwashers and our floor runners for another successful delicious breakfast. Our Christmas Dinner, oh my gosh, what a great turnout we had. We had to move coffee pots and look in the far corners for enough tables and chairs to accommodate everyone but got it done. The food was fantastic, thank you to Bobby Keyes, Mark Currier, Nancy Currier and Mark. Thank you to all that donated turkeys, hams and desserts. A visit from Santa, who came toting gifts, made the kids happy and our new sound system played Christmas music but could hardly be heard above the murmur of all the wonderful friends and neighbors enjoying conversation with each other. It was a wonderful evening, so thanks too to all the valley residents who showed up to celebrate this great season with us. We had a very low turnout at the quarterly SVLPOA meeting in Dec, which was kind of expected as it was so close to Christmas. Win Cary was there to report on the Wolf Creek Firewise Committee and we have been excepted by the Firewise Program. This means we are now eligible for grants to purchase equipment and educate members of the valley so as to protect Spring Valley during any future wildfire happenings. Win will now start the process of a lot of paperwork in order for us to obtain a grant. Thanks Win for all your hard work for the residents of Spring Valley, it is appreciated. The SVLPOA voted to donate $100 to the Firewise Committee to get them started with postage and stationary supplies to help get this wonderful program off the ground. The POA, starting in January will be holding Karaoke at the Community Center on the 2nd and 3rd Fridays of the month. January will be Friday the 11th and Friday the 18th. The bar will be open at 6 and the Karaoke which will be Cherrioke because it will be hosted by the very fun and great "Tattoo'd Cherries". We will also be serving snacks and more (we haven't determined this yet). Admission is free so come have a really fun evening with us and the Tattoo'd Cherries. Time is Bar opens at 6 - Cherrioke starts at 7-10pm. A nominating committee has been appointed so everyone should be getting a call in February. At our next quarterly meeting in March will be election night to elect a new board. At this time ALL positions will be open so think about running for an office on the board of directors. If you have been unhappy about how things have been run, here is your chance to make the changes you want. I have always said "you can't change things by staying away and complaining" if you want changes "become involved". Also we will need a new Newsletter Editor as Monte Winters will be stepping down from the position in March. Thank you Monte for a job well done and printing out the Newsletters yourself, which saved the POA a lot of money. He is very willing and able to train the person who would like to do the newsletter before March. Please contact him if interested. If no replacement is found there will be no Newsletter, what a shame that would be. I would like to wish everyone of my Friends, Neighbors and Valley Residents a Very Happy New Year and may 2019 bring you all good health and Happiness. 4 CERT NEWS Hello everyone, CERT meeting: Wed. Jan 2nd, 6pm-7pm. We will be having our regular monthly meeting Wed. Jan. 2. All are welcome to attend. We now have more than ten people signed and paid for our "wilderness" type of first aid course. Now just getting in contact with the North Shore B.C. to set up time and date. John Jones, CERT Captain On "wilderness first aid" > FREE FIRST AID TRAINING The Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) is working with North Shore Fire, to provide free first aid training to residents of Spring Valley and Long Valley. The training may be taught by paramedics from North Shore Fire at our Community Center. The date and time will be determined after a minimum of ten people sign up for the training. This is a great opportunity for parents, care providers, everyone 18 and over, to learn what to do if an accident or emergency develops in your home. How do you help? What should you do while you wait for an ambulance to arrive? There will be a $10 per-person sign-up fee for the training, the fee will be returned upon your successful completion of the training. Time is running out! SIGN UP NOW! CSA 2 ADVISORY BOARD Ed. The December 5th meeting was attended by all board members except Helen Mitcham and Scott Prewitt. The only formal business for the board was the introduction and discussion of a motion to change the bylaws such that the Board of Supervisors would have the month of January to appoint CSA#2 board members [paragraph 4.1]. The motion accepted by the board and will be presented a second time at the January 5th meeting. Other discussions by the board and those in attendance included the need for a more communicative Special Districts when they undertake work suggested by the Board or residents of Spring Valley. For example, it is not clear that a request from the Board for action by SDA is actually dismissed, undertaken, in process, or complete. The issue includes items that were damaged or destroyed by the fires this season and it is not clear whether SDA agrees that they are valid, serious issues, takes steps to ensure they are included in fire mitigation work by other responsible departments, tracks the work to completion and ensures recovery of any costs paid by the SDA on behalf of CSA2. The solution is for SDA to communicate each step of the above as it is completed. Currently, SDA is undermanned and we know this is a burden, we are, however, seeing expenses for fire mitigation that are not explained, and this tax revenue is being spent on items not in the budget. We are confident that SDA will work with us to provide closure on items requested by us we must know if the issues we feel are important are being addressed. We sincerely hope that SDA manpower is increased to a level that will allow adequate project tracking and reporting. The CSA#2 Board will begin discussion in January with responsible departments to determine what can be done to move forward on Lake Recovery. 5 Lake Family Resource Center ini4ates California HOPE in response to Mendocino Complex Fires Kelseyville, Calif. Lake Family Resource Center recently launched California HOPE, a community-based outreach program offering support to Lake County residents affected by the Mendocino Complex Fires. Trained outreach workers for the grant funded project will provide free and anonymous disaster related informaion and assistance, resource linkage, educaion and emoional support. Lake County has been hit hard these past years, explained Lake FRC ExecuIve Director and California HOPE Program Director, Lisa Morrow. There isn t anyone in our county that hasn t been affected by the fires. We want to offer our community the best support we can to find our way successfully through to full recovery. JoAnn Saccato, team lead for the project, added Our team will be out in the community helping connect individuals and families to other people and agencies who can help them in their recovery process. We ll also provide educaion and support to individuals, groups and organizaions wishing to beter understand the phases of disaster recovery, how disasters affect individuals, families and communiies, and simple acions we can take to support natural resilience. Services through California HOPE are free and anonymous. Community members and organizaions are encouraged to reach out for support, educaion and assistance.
