The International Committee of Decorative Arts and Design is in constant contact with experts in our field in relevant museums, informing about actual projects, exhibitions, conferences and by this the ICOM-ICDAD.com homepage becomes a strong medium of information and recruiting, attracting new members. All other recruiting measures are impossible because we have no budget or paid staff for this. The only means to attract members is cooperation in projects on a non financial basis, serving as informal partner, providing knowledge and expertise in our field. 5. Achievements for the Year 2010 Please list anything not covered above that you want to tell us about your committee s achievements! Four of ICOM s International Committees - DEMHIST, GLASS, ICDAD and ICFA - have organized successfully a joint symposium "From Silk Road to Container Ship: artefacts, environment and cultural transfer"on the theme of cultural transfers between East and West / West and East held during the 22 nd General Conference & 25 th General Assembly of the International Council of Museums in Shanghai on the 9 th -10 th of November The symposium invited speakers 4/13
5 from all four committees and from among our Chinese colleagues to discuss historical and contemporary perspectives of artistic exchange. All further information is to be found on ICOM-ICDAD.com, where the program and the abstracts of the papers delivered during the conference are also published. See special report was delivered to ICOM Germany by our representative of the ICDAD Board Dir. Dr. Wolfgang Schepers. ICDAD has supported the EU Culture 2000 Project ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN IN CENTRAL EUROPE IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY. JOSEF HOFFMANN AND DUSAN JURKOVIC as informative partner. ICDAD has co organized with DEMHIST an international symposium held in Brno : NATIONAL INTERNATIONAL: Arts and politics in houses and interiors of the 20th century The organisation of the international symposium was the main result of communication activities held within the project. It set out two principal tasks: introduce to the experts a new phenomenon of international museology important houses that may not be large in size but are very popular as they allow the visitors to obtain information about a particular period and environment through an outstanding individual. It is this personal level that makes it so attractive. The second aim was to search for an answer to the question of to what extent the expressions of central European architecture and design are international and to what extent they are national and how views on this subject may differ depending on the perspective of observers from different countries. The subject was reflected in the symposium title as well. The programme of the symposium consisted of two days of lectures and presentations, and a two-day excursion. The excursion concentrated on introducing important houses in the Czech Republic to the international audience of experts. The initially planned extension of the excursion to the Austrian territory finally proved to be unfeasible in the end due to the fact that the selected buildings have not yet been turned into open-access museums and continue to be lived in by private owners. In total, 83 participants and guests from nine countries of Europe and Canada attended the symposium. Unfortunately, a number of overseas participants (mainly from the USA, Mexico, and also Finland, Portugal, etc.) could not attend because of flight problems due to volcano ash that were disturbing air traffic worldwide in April The symposium was very efficiently promoted on the international level by ICOM-ICDAD (associate project partner),and conceived as a venue for the the Committee s annual gathering. During the preparations, another important international experts body joined ICOM-DEMHIST, International Committee for Historic House Museums, whose members also took part in the event in Brno, several of them actively contributing with presentations. The symposium was attended in person by the presidents of both international councils ICDAD (Rainald Franz) and DEMHIST (Daniela Ball). All further information is to be found on The papers of the conference are due to be published within the next Bulletin of the Moravian Gallery in Brno, see: ICDAD is working on expanding the archive of the former conferences held since 1964, trying to document as much as possible of the work of the committee in digfital form for the future. ICDAD has achieved to launch a French version of its homepage due to be administrated parallel to the English version from now on in order to attract more members from the French speaking countries. 5/13

8 C) THREE-YEAR PLAN The submission of a three-year-forward plan, as part of the annual reporting is considered necessary in order to gain a thorough understanding of the ICs long term plan and the objectives / mechanisms the means by which they intend to achieve their vision. When filling in this information, consider the directions provided by the Strategic Plan of ICOM. Out of the following plans for , please indicate those activities you would like the Secretariat to include in ICOM s communication campaign and media (ENewsletter, ICOM News, ICOM s website, etc.). C.1 Please describe your committee s Aims and Objectives for the Next Three Years. During the first meeting of the new elected Board in Vienna in mid January 2011, a policy was implemented in order to obtain goals ICDAD wants to achieve within the next years. 370 members make ICDAD an important international committee. Efforts shall be taken to increase the number of members in the next years. One first step, the implementation of a French version of the homepage, has already been taken. Contacts with directors of Museums of Decorative Arts and Design shall be intensified worldwide, special steps to approach them personally will be taken in order to develop ICDADs role as an organisation of exchange of ideas and projects in our field even further. Young staff members of museums from our field and members from developing countries shall be attracted to join the committee e.g. by our scholarships for the annual meetings. The homepage ICOM-ICDAD.com shall be improved constantly, making it a digital archive of ICDADs activities and a working tool for discussion, knowledge and information in the Decorative Arts and Design. Attractive Meetings in world regions of special interest for the Decorative Arts and Design shall secure the growth of our committee within the core of ICOM. Last but not least, cooperations with other ICs, successfully tested last year with our meetings in Brno and Shanghai, shall become a habit for ICDAD like the teaming up with non ICOM-Projects, which could mean important steps forward in our field. 8/13
