2 13th annual VIATeC FOOD BANK CHALLENGE Thank you for participating in this year s Challenge. Once again, we are challenging companies in Victoria to compete in an effort to raise as much food and donations as possible for the Mustard Seed Food Bank. A large percentage of our community members are employed families struggling to make ends meet. The Mustard Seed does an amazing job providing support, helping 7000 people/month, but they can always use more help... and that s where we come in! Keep in mind, with the Mustard Seed s buying power, cash goes even further than food donations! We welcome all companies located in the Greater Victoria area to participate. We will be recognizing both the company that donates the most food overall as well as the company that donates the most per employee. Participants will be thanked & recognized throughout the challenge and the winners will be celebrated at the VIATEC Member Christmas Party on December 10th. The VIATEC Food Bank Challenge has been running for 13 years. To date $1,732, value of food and cash has been donated from Greater Victoria Technology companies. Last year $45,000 in cash and 1500 pounds of food was donated to the Mustard Seed Food Bank, but there s so much more that we can do! Let s show all of Victoria how our community gives back! The food drive runs November 9th to December 4th. We need your company volunteer to oversee the campaign at your office for the four weeks. There are four Fridays during the campaign and we are asking that your Company Coordinator us a tally at the end of each week so that we can issue updates and let everyone know who is leading and who needs to step it up! The tally sheets have been provided and we ask that you direct all correspondence to kwalker@viatec.ca. PAGE 2

3 Rules. Participating companies vary in number of employees, so we ve set up some rules so that everyone has a chance at the boasting rights. 1. VALUE OF 555 COLD, HARD CASH 2. SUBMISSION DEADLINE To participate in the weekly challenges each week s food and cash donations should be counted and ed to VIATEC, kwalker@viatec.ca by 1 pm Friday, in order to tally the leaders & be included in the weekly winner news release. 222 HIGH DEMAND 5 Points Per Dollar See chart below *NEW BONUS!* referrals NEW! HIGH DEMAND ITEMS: PHOTO OF THE WEEK NEW! 500 PER REFERRAL 250 TO ONE WEEKLY WINNER 3. FINAL SCORING There are TWO categories to compete in! 1). Overall Points Earned 111 POINT ALL OTHER GIVE US A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR TEAM, YOUR STOCK PILE OF FOOD OR ANYTHING TO SHOW THE COMMUNITY HOW YOU RE HELPING OUT! UPLOAD IT VIA TWITTER (@VIATEC) OR INSTAGRAM (@TECTORIAGRAM) WITH #VIATECFOODBANKCHALLENGE BY EACH THURSDAY AT 4PM AND YOU COULD WIN 250! 2). We will divide each company s donations by: The number of employees it has at its Victoria office to determine points per employee (e.g. 700 points / 50 employees = 14 points per employee) We have included a list of requested items from the Food Bank. In addition to cash donations, these are the items that are the most in demand and will make the most difference Canned Vegetables CANNED FRUIT Canned Meat/ Fish CANNED SOUP/SAUCE CANNED BEANS (Chickpeas/kidney/brown) Pasta / Rice (Dry) Peanut Butter BABY FOOD Formula (Powder or liquid) Diapers/PULL UPS PAGE 3

4 CASH The Mustard Seed Food Bank welcomes cash as this money enables the Food Bank to purchase fresh fruits & veggies. Additionally, money goes further into the New Year when donations are often much slower. The Mustard Seed also have a much higher buying power with a dollar often doubling it for needed goods. Tax Receipts will be available for any donation over $20.00 if the person has provided a name and address on the Cash Tally Sheet that was provided to you. NON-PERISHABLE Non-perishable food items collected throughout the 4 weeks can stay at your location if you have ample space available. Having the food on site is a great visual for your staff to encourage the pile to grow. If you choose to do this please still tally the food items weekly and send in the results. Should you prefer to drop off the food we will have a display at Fort Tectoria (777 Fort St). Drop off times and details are listed below! Online donations - Can be made by clicking here. In order to ensure that the donations are included in your company total please select I am making this gift in honour of someone at the bottom of the web page. Type in VIATEC FOOD BANK CHALLENGE in the field that appears and ensure that you list the donation on the Cash Tally Sheet provided with your cash donations. 5 EARLY BIRD BONUS Need a little incentive to get the donations flowing? If your company favors a strategic last week push, you may want to rethink your strategy. To help you encourage your co-workers to donate early and often, the Food Bank Challenge is offering Early Bird Bonus Points. The earlier your company starts donating, the bigger the bonus. Each week, two companies the one that donates the most points and the one that donates the most points-per-employee will get a reward for their generosity. PLUS: We ve added brand new bonus points for referrals and photo of the week! See page 3. WEEK CATEGORY BONUS One Most Points 1,000 Two Most Points 500 Three Most Points 250 Four Most Points 0 1. Count the number of donations you ve received several times throughout the week and the counts to your fellow employees. 2. Consider setting up an in-house competition. Post your competitor s weekly totals. (Distributed each Monday) 50 Per Employee 25 Per Employee 10 Per Employee 0 Per Employee HELPFUL HINTS FOR COMPANY VOLUNTEERS TO KEEP THE BUZZ AND FLOWING IN! 4. If you need help delivering donations and you are in the Victoria area, let us know. 5. Remember. have fun! While this is all about helping people in need, the more fun you put into it the more people will want to get involved and donate. 3. Keep the collections for each week separate so your counts don t get confused. If you have limited space, feel free to contact us to arrange a drop off at our storage depot. 6. Have your CEO challenge another CEO and put some real competition into it! OTHER WAYS TO INCREASE : 1. Start Early Get a head start on the competition. Don t depend on a last minute donation spree to surpass your rivals. It could be too little, too late. 2. Buy Smart There are lots of inexpensive but valuable items in the Most Needed list. Concentrate your efforts there. Encourage employees to share information about case lot and other sales. 3. Cash Donations Spread the word! The Mustard Seed has bigger buying power when it comes to the grocery stores and can get more bang for the buck. 4. Be a Leader Show your co-workers the way. Offer incentives to encourage them to meet a challenging donation level or offer to match their donations with your own!
