2016 Year in Review Education Innovation
Dear Friends and Colleagues, w In 2016, EnCorps serves high need students in Los Angeles and Orange counties, Sacramento, San Diego and the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. We are proud to have guided nearly 600 Fellows through our innovative program, impacting more than 35,000 youth in under-resourced communities. In , EnCorps recruited a record-high 118 Fellows and garnered press attention from the LA Times, the National Journal, and Inside Philanthropy, among others. I am tremendously honored to report that an August White House ceremony formally recognized the EnCorps Fellowship as a US2020 Excellence in Volunteer Experience Award Winner. Sponsored by Chevron and Tata Consultancy Services, the US2020 STEM Mentoring Awards serve as a national platform to celebrate and encourage exceptional work in the STEM mentoring field. We work tirelessly to create an efficient, effective organization that supports our theory of change to address the STEM teacher shortage and support our Fellows in the best ways possible in their transition to teaching. We are committed to our mission of delivering the best and brightest from STEM fields into classrooms in communities where they are needed most. Having partnered with more than 250 schools, districts and after-school programs, EnCorps enters 2017 as a preeminent solution to the STEM education crisis. I am truly humbled to drive this mission forward and to serve the next generation of innovators. LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP Katherine C. Wilcox Executive Director
THEORY OF CHANGE
EnCorps welcomed three key regional staff members in 2016, aiding in the recruitment of our largest cohort ever Fellows. We also ended this recruitment season with the highest number of pre-service placements, credential candidates and new teachers in our history. In addition, the Executive and Program and Recruitment team established Key Performance Indicators as measures of program success. Year-end data shows EnCorps ranks 90% or above in increasing student excitement, achievement, and understanding of real-world STEM connection. EnCorps heads into the academic year poised for even greater growth. Deepened efforts in San Diego and Orange Counties have helped raise military recruitment to 58 armed forces veterans GROWTH & IMPACT
In October 2015, Fall Institutes were hosted by San Francisco State University in Northern California and CSU Dominguez Hills in Southern California. The Spring Institutes were held at Green Dot Animo Watts in March and Leadership Public Schools Hayward in April, including professional development topics such as Tips, Tricks and Techniques: How to Survive the First 5! and Fun and Effective Collaborative Learning Structures. More than 129 EnCorps Fellows attended our annual capstone event, Summer Residential Institute, hosted at UC Berkeley in June. Representatives from Project Lead the Way, New Teacher Center, USF, Physics Teachers SOS and Lighthouse Community Charter School presented sessions such as Project-Based Learning in Your Classroom and Not Your Grandma s Schoolhouse: Learning and Teaching in the 21st Century. EnCorps recognized Fellows of the Year and new teachers from San Diego and Orange Counties, Greater Los Angeles, the Greater Bay Area, and the Sacramento Region, at the Teachers and Friends Reception.
