2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission The purposes of the Rutherford County Historical Society are to discover, procure, and preserve such facts articles or documents as relate, directly or collaterally, to the natural, aboriginal, civil, political, military, literary, industrial, agricultural, and ecclesiastical history of the County, or of any contiguous area which may affect or have bearing on such matters within the County. It will cooperate with the Tennessee Historical Commission, the Tennessee Historical Society, the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities, and any similar bodies with which it may have contact to collect and preserve materials of state-wide significance, so that these materials can be made available to students and scholars. Background We are a non-profit organization working to preserve our rich history. We have approximately 200 members and serve our town, county and surrounding cities and towns in Middle Tennessee. Our society was officially organized in 1975 by a small group of individuals who were the descendants of ancestors that came over the mountains from rth Carolina and Virginia seeking land and a better life for themselves and their families. Murfreesboro was established at the present location in Middle Tennessee State University is located in Murfreesboro and serves 25,000+ students from all over the world. MTSU has a Public History Master's Degree program that is one of the top five in the nation and attracts students from the USA as well as other countries. Rutherford County has a program that assists graduate students with tuition in exchange for their work in our Archives. This arrangement has been very successful and is beneficial to everyone. Rutherford Country is rich in history and provides students with a real life study environment.we include MTSU graduate students in our work at every opportunity. Impact Maintain and improved our historical museum; obtained grants to help with this expense; improved our museum classroom.publish, re-publish, hard bind and make our publications available on the Internet in a searchable format. Maintain a website for selling our publications and sharing informationbe a good neighbor and work to improve our blighted neighborhood. Needs Printing, reprinting our publications as well as hard binding our most important publications.gain access to the Internet at our historic Ransom School House.Build an e-commerce site so as to sell publications and promote our work. The Rutherford County Historical Society ( was founded in 1971 to preserve and promote OUR local history. Please visit and enjoy. 4 Programs Programs Society Publications Description We need to present our historical publications in a format that will be available in libraries and archives for many years to come. We would also like to develop a website for selling publications and present some of our historical information in a searchable format to the general public and/or any interested researcher world wide. In the meantime, we wish to contact property owners in our neighborhood in an order to interest everyone in improving their own property. We are located in a historical neighborhood that has deteriorated over the years and has a great need to be a community again. What is Coffee & Conversation? Stated simply, Coffee & Conversation reminds me of the days of my childhood when my grandfathers and their friends gathered at the Courthouse to whittle and swap stories. Well, that's exactly what Coffee & Conversation has become 25 or more friends' gather each Saturday morning to laugh and have fun, but more importantly exchange stories about OUR local history. 6

CEO Comments Passion for service is applied by our Board and volunteers on a daily basis at the RCHS. Our membership has almost doubled since mid Our monthly meetings (the third Monday of each month) is edging towards standing-room-only. Our requests for information (genealogy, what was there, etc.) have increased. Again, our weekly Coffee & Conversation has become an immense success with 25-30, sometimes 35 visitors each Saturday. What a great problem to have! 7
