2 Tekes the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation Tekes is the most important publicly funded expert organization for financing research, development and innovation in Finland. Tekes works with the top innovative companies and research units in Finland. Every year, Tekes finances some research and development projects Total Tekes funding anually is ca 600 M 280 employees in Helsinki and 100 employees in regional network

3 The funding will be channeled through different operating methods as follows: Around 40 % for customer initiatives based on demand Around 20 % for research programmes of the Strategic Centres for Science, Technology and Innovation (SHOK) Around 25 % to focus areas through Tekes programmes Around 15 % to other strategic choices

7 ULCOS (Biggest Steel project in FP) ULCOS stands for Ultra Low Carbon dioxide(co 2 ) Steelmaking It is a consortium of 48 European companies and organisations from 15 European countries The aim of the ULCOS programme is to reduce the Carbon dioxide(co 2 ) emissions of today s best routes by at least 50 percent The budget is 75 million Euro over a 6 year period Future: The Hisarna pilot plant (8t/h) is under construction in Tata Steel, Netherlands, and first trials are planned in first half 2011 The demo project is expected to capture 0,5 Mt / yr France, Lorraine region, total cost is 590M. Construction could commence 2012/2013, and the carbon storage could ideally start in 2015 The European commission financially contributes the remaining 40 percent through its 6 th /7th Framework and the RFCS

8 Other success stories for ESTEP research proposals FP7 3 projects where ESTEP s stakeholders are partners have been approved - BUILDING UP, a Coordination and Support Action for setting-up a long term research & innovation roadmap to overcome technological and non- technological barriers in the construction of energy efficient buildings - STEELPROST, a collaborative project on innovative fire protecting coatings for steel structures - MACPLUS, a collaborative project promoting steel for energy has been approved: Material- Component Performance- driven Solutions for Long term efficiency increase in Ultra Supercritical power plants Leonardo da Vinci fund Proposed by the Working Group 5, the Greening Technical VET (Vocational Education & Training), a sustainable training module for the European steel industry has been approved within the Leonardo da Vinci fund. RFCS Even if the Research Fund for Coal and Steel remains a bottom-up approach, annual priorities are defined. The different ESTEP Working Groups have made numerous proposals in line with these priorities and obtained for the last call a success rate of 35% which is much higher than the average.

22 FP 8? Recommendations for the future FP8: -ESTEP underlined that steel is an indispensable constituent of an advanced economy. For the FP8, more emphasis should be placed on structural materials, production processes of these materials and LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) approach. -In collaboration with other ETPs, ESTEP is ready to contribute to the FP8 preparation.

23 Reminder of overall NMP approach Strong impacts needed at EU level (dissemination, exploitation of results) Transition towards knowledge-based society & sustainable development, from resource-based to knowledge-based Promotion of real breakthroughs not incremental research Integrated, multi-disciplinary and holistic approach

24 Some advice Begin early (but there will be further calls) Read carefully the contents of the Work Programme! Take into account the evaluation criteria (from the 1st stage ) Submit a draft version on EPSS one week before the deadline! Do not leave it until the last minute to present the «Submit» button!

25 What proposals should avoid Pure software development with no research Pure methodology with no research and innovation on technology and/or pilot cases Consultancy activities, without any real/proven industrial participation (both solution providers and end users) Local' applications with no added value at European level

28 What has been changed (from FP1 to FP7) FPs are coming bigger and bigger (7. FP M!) Electronic proposals for the EU program (EPSS), good! More complicated more instruments, like new DEMO Negotations with commission takes too much time (up to 1,5 years!) Topics will continue to span spectrum from enabling research to applications and demostration activities PPP (public private partnership) = good and fast
