5 Context: CARE- Why? Technological challenges 1. Aeronautics research agenda 2. European cluster policy: Flightpath % reduction in CO2 emissions & a 90% reduction in NOx emissions. The perceived noise emission of flying aircraft is reduced by 65% (relative to a typical new aircraft in 2000 ) Objectives 2020 and ICAO standards: Reduction by 50% of carbon dioxide (CO2) Reduction by 80% of NOx Nitrogen oxide Reduction by 50% of perceived noise Aircraft recycling and green maintenance Grant Agreement Page 5

6 CARE - Challenges Four major technological challenges for aerospace research during the upcoming decade(s) in order to shape future competitive and sustainable European economic growth: 1. More energy efficient airborne systems: greener engines, lighter aero-structures, alternative fuels, more electric aircraft equipment, etc. 2. Eco-Design improving the environmental impact of the whole product life cycle 3. Greener Air traffic management; capabilities for "green" trajectories and missions 4. The territorial integration of air transport into an efficient and green multimodal transport system Grant Agreement Page 6

7 CARE- how? A project for the Aeronautics Research Agenda Green technologies are key competitive advantages of future air transport systems. Major environmental challenges are at stake in aircraft life cycle management, air traffic management and integration of air transport into multimodal transport system. The CARE project will reinforce the R&D networking already instigated at regional level through research-driven clusters and will increase the competitiveness of these regions in the field of Green Aircraft Transportation by: enhancing more effective investments in R&D at regional level stimulating the setting-up of additional regional research-orientated clusters (mentoring activity) catalysing synergies and public private partnerships both on finance and research agendas standpoints at the European scale Page 7

Economic situation Importance of SMEs in the European industrial landscape Source: Eurostats Combined with laboratories expertise, this SMEs can be: Source of innovations Source of sustainable &qualified jobs Source of competitiveness for regional industry BUT: Difficulties for these small actors To have an overview (markets trends, norms evolution, project opportunities) To be visibile and to be known of other partners/customers To go for international projects ( lack of knowledge, afraid of redtape, no real network..) 9 CARE - Challenges Study of the aeronautics landscape permitted to draft a report compiling the 31 main technical and economical challenges faced by the European aviation ecosystem in a globalized context and competition. 13 top-priority challenges for the CARE group: In line with the recommendation of an Executive Advisory Board made of members from EADS IW, ACARE, Clean Sky, ENAC, Logistics in Wallonia, ITP, Univ Politneca di Torino, Turkish School of Civil Aviation Grant Agreement Page 9

10 CARE Results & Objectives We built a baseline directory database of about 300 R&D actors from European researchdriven clusters We identified those areas of common interest on which transnational cooperation between research driven clusters should be fostered in order to enable economic development from more and better R&D investments. We built a Joint Action Plan (JAP) with 21 concrete inter-regional actions focussing on excellence, efficiency and visibility To ensure the dissemination of this JAP among and inside 30+ regional clusters and to have started fostering cross fertilization and partnership building among the various players To search for all possible financing sources that could be mobilized to support the implementation of the JAP To have an input of about 10 joint proposals to European funding instruments Grant Agreement Page 10
