2 Overview A continuing initiative of the Rotary Club of Tumbarumba (in conjunction with Tumbarumba High School), Tumbarumba 2 Kokoda 2011 seeks to encourage personal development in Tumbarumba s youth. Involving Year 11 & 12 students from Tumbarumba High School (in 2011), the trek is aimed at broadening the perspective of Tumbarumba youth, building self confidence, self esteem and self reliance. Regional employers have embraced the project (and continue to do so) on the realisation that they would receive a direct benefit through the students graduating with a more worldly outlook and with a high level of motivation, initiative and willingness to challenge themselves and succeed. These attributes, combined with the benefits of a rural upbringing will provide quality, long term employees to the broader community. Rural youth are raised in an environment based on good principles, values and work ethic, however often lack the opportunity to develop a broader picture of the world in their formative years. To be able to instil in our youth a deep seated belief in their ability to accomplish their goals in the face of insurmountable adversity is a worthy challenge. This belief will not only steel them against the challenges of rural living, but also against the personal and professional obstacles they will encounter throughout life. The project involves much more than just walking the Kokoda Track it is a journey. It involves training, fundraising, history, team ethos, leadership and interpersonal skills. While in Papua New Guinea (PNG)students will be exposed to a very different culture and way of life. They will meet villagers and carriers and make many friends as well as developing and extending friendships with their peers and community members. Since its inception, Tumbarumba 2 Kokoda has sent 33 students to PNG to walk the Kokoda Track. The changes in the attitudes of the participants whom we employed were remarkable. Their application to work, their initiative and their concentration levels were all sharpened. Relationships with senior staff members and customers were broadened and their scope of seeing the outcome heightened. - Lauder Family, IGA Tumbarumba

3 Background June 2006 saw a group of Rotarians, teachers and community members discussing how an opportunity could be provided for local students to gain a greater understanding of the world. A wild suggestion that night of take them to Kokoda led to a group of 17 school students, 2 teachers and 3 Rotarians travelling to Papua New Guinea to walk the Kokoda Track. The trek was aimed at broadening the perspective of our youth, building self confidence, self esteem and self reliance. The project also aimed at supporting local education. Participating students had to be enrolled in Year 11 or 12 at the local school. All students were encouraged to participate and those in need would be provided with support. Following initial discussion with the Principal of the school, it was decided that the best chance of success was under the Rotary banner, with support from the school. The organisers of the project comprised members of local Rotary, the school and parent representatives of the students involved. Early on a trekking company was brought on board and their considerable expertise utilised. They were responsible for organising the PNG side of the experience and the organisation of the food required for the trip. This left the local committee to prepare the students for walking the track (physically and mentally), raising funds, and personal preparation (passport/visa, medical requirements, equipment etc). The initial project was to prepare 17 school students and their leaders to walk the Kokoda Track. Activities began in earnest during September 2006 for a departure in April Training involved weekly walks building to 3 a week in the last few months of training. The local gym made their facilities and expertise available to the students. Weekly meetings were held at school to keep the momentum rolling. Parent meetings were held as required. These meetings covered all matters relating to the project and were essential in communicating the needs of the project as well as providing expert medical advice from a local Doctor. Kokoda veterans visited the area to speak to the school students and the general public. This has led to close contact between the project and the 2/14th Battalion and the 3rd Battalion. Following on from the extremely successful Kokoda2007, the committee were enticed into organising a trip for 30 community members (in two groups) to also walk the track in April 2008 (Kokoda2008). In April 2009 a further 16 school students ventured to PNG as members of the Kokoda2009 project. changed ten-fold. The program is magnificent. - Greg Hammond, Hammonds Hardware My part-time student employees have

4 Student Benefits The program has allowed 33 (2007 & 2009) students and their leaders to prepare for and trek the Kokoda Track. Great emphasis is placed on the preparation and the development of a team where everybody plays their part and provides support to those in need. While on the track (and in preparation) this team work is always in evidence and gives the organisers great pleasure. The project has a wonderful and continuing relationship with local and regional businesses, leading to more work experience and employment opportunities for the students. There is a respect for Tumbarumba by Veteran organisations as a town that values and remembers the sacrifices made for our country. The teaching staff has observed a growth (quite substantial at times) in the students in the following areas: Student leadership Independence Responsibility Participation Healthy lifestyle habits Cultural understanding and empathy Self-confidence and self esteem Historical awareness Respect for the generations that have gone before The student trekkers agree with the teacher observations of growth. One of the biggest growth areas for the students is in that I can do anything I just have to work at it, and with a recognition that the biggest part of the statement is the I. There has been increased interaction between the students, the school and the community. Many community members joined the students in their preparation and as a result expanded their own horizons to such an extent that they have participated in a number of community treks. The project provides an income to the communities that live along the track, as well as tangible support to the medical facilities built by Rotary International. Support is provided to the badly under-resourced school in our adopted village. The project has collected a number of prestigious awards including the Rotary District Youth Service Award 2007/2008, the Tumbarumba Shire Australia Day Award for Community Service 2008, the Schools First award for Outstanding Community Partnerships and the organising teacher received the Rotary District Excellence in Community Service Award The program has encouraged students to stay at school and to receive a better education. This has meant a better peer group, encouraging students to aim higher. This has also made the senior school a positive role model for the junior school. Younger students have been inspired and enthused by what has been achieved. I have heightened self esteem, individuality, belief in myself and my abilities. I have learnt not to limit myself and to take opportunities as they arise. - Zoey McIntyre, 2007 Trekker

5 2011 Details Kokoda Track Dates 8th 25th April 2011 Demographic 2011 Year 11 & 12 Students at Tumbarumba High School (aged years). The school has a student population of 174 (Years 7-12). Tumbarumba High is a family school with strong student welfare who share triumphs and tragedies both in and out of school. Distance and cost of transport are a huge challenge. Both of which, exclude many students from benefiting from the advantages that cities and regional areas offer. Our challenge is to rise above the disadvantages of living in a small rural community and recognise that education in all its forms is the key to future success. All matters relating to Tumbarumba 2 Kokoda sponsorship should be directed to: Mr Bruce Wright Ph: Fax: (02) bruce.wright@hyne.com.au Post: PO Box 101, Tumbarumba NSW 2653 Tumbarumba is a small isolated rural community with a population of approximately 3,000 (including surrounding areas). Funding & Sponsorship The program is offered to students at a heavily discounted rate to ensure the maximum number of students can participate. The cost to send each student on this trek is $5,000 with each student required to pay $1,000 towards their journey. Students are also responsible for their passport/visa, medical expenses (with regard to inoculations) and the provision of the necessary equipment for the trip. As part of the Kokoda experience, students are required to undertake a variety of fundraising activities to assist with the cost of the journey. Sponsorship is also required from local, regional and interstate businesses. The Kokoda project has been successful in providing the youth of Tumbarumba with a means of challenging themselves more than they thought possible. - Chris Skeels-Piggins, Manager, Hyne Timber Tumbarumba Mill
