This is a full-time, 12 month position, with the possibility of extension subject to funding About Reprieve Reprieve is a UK charity founded in 1999 by Clive Stafford Smith. Reprieve uses strategic interventions to end the use of the death penalty globally, and secret prisons and statesanctioned assassinations in the context of the so-called war on terror. We work for the most disenfranchised people in society, as it is in their cases that human rights are most swiftly jettisoned and the rule of law is cast aside. Thus, we promote and protect the rights of those facing the death penalty and those who are the victims of extreme human rights abuses committed in the context of the so-called war on terror (WOT), with a focus on secret prisons and state-sanctioned assassinations. Underpinning Reprieve s strategic focus is the notion that countries such as the UK and US hold themselves out as shining examples of democratic societies that respect the rule of law and human rights, and therefore should be held to exacting standards in terms of how they respond to acts or allegations of terrorism and murder. Their responses have ripple effects worldwide, and are frequently used to justify the continuation of the death penalty, extrajudicial killing, torture, rendition and unlawful detention by countries ranging from aspiring exemplars to worst offenders. Reprieve s main office is based in London, UK. Reprieve also supports full time Reprieve Fellows, who work as lawyers, investigators and advocates in different countries. Reprieve works with partners in jurisdictions all over the world, including Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs), government officials, individual lawyers and human rights defenders, as well as individual, corporate and foundation funders. The Role: 1

2 Over the next few years, Reprieve has ambitious and impactful plans and the Development and Outreach Team are responsible for ensuring we have the funds to achieve our goals. The Development and Outreach Officer will be directly responsible for generating income from trusts, foundations and statutory bodies some of which will be outside of the UK - along with feeding into a pipeline of prospective funders. Duties will include supporting the Executive Director in maintaining and maximising current relationships; identifying, researching and cultivating potential new funders; and ensuring internal Development and Outreach processes and systems are fit for purpose. We are looking for an experienced fundraiser with a strong track record of raising money from charitable trusts, foundations and statutory bodies, but more than this we are looking for someone with the professionalism, energy, creativity and drive to seek out and make the most of viable funding opportunities. You do not need to be experienced at raising funds for human rights causes specifically, but you do need to be able to clearly and persuasively articulate Reprieve s work in a way that is accessible and compelling to funders. You will also need to quickly develop an understanding of Reprieve s key areas of work and the impact we seek to achieve in these. You will work closely with two other Development and Outreach Officers, the Development and Outreach Deputy Director and the Executive Director. Because we are a small and close team you will need to be both self-sufficient and a team player. There will be ample opportunities to learn about and get involved in other areas of fundraising. You will also have the willingness to muck in on tasks big and small, humility and a passion for fundraising for Reprieve. The main duties of this role are: Income generation Oversee and meet income targets from Trusts, Foundations, Statutory bodies, awards and prizes; Oversee the drafting of compelling, persuasive and professional grant applications to secure and renew funding. This funding might be quite specific to an area of Reprieve s work, and require you developing an insight into the details of how that work is being implemented and what it is seeking to achieve; Ensure all donors are thanked and acknowledged for their giving in targeted ways; Draft concise and captivating reports for funders and ensure that they are submitted on time and using the correct templates/format. Identifying new opportunities Build a pipeline of viable prospective grant makers through proactive research and responding to opportunities. You will need to be able to make an assessment of whether a particular new opportunity warrants a certain investment of time in research, and you must be able to prioritise and weigh up factors including our prospects of success, the amount of prospective funding available, and the needs of the area of work it might cover; 2

3 Think creatively about new income streams that may be available to Reprieve. Managing partners Steward current and prospective funders, ensuring stewardship plans are in place, that they receive copies of our annual reports, audited accounts and regular communications whilst supporting the Executive Director - acting as the face of Reprieve - in her interactions with these partners; Brief the Executive Director, members of the senior management team, and caseworkers prior to meetings with major donors and representatives of funders - providing information on grant objectives, funding awarded and upcoming reporting requirements. Planning, monitoring and reporting Oversee the Grant Management table and make sure it is up to date and accurate whilst ensuring that all deadlines are communicated, monitored and adhered to; Translate the provision of financial data into interim and narrative financial reports for both institutional and individual donors; Work with the casework team and/or members of the senior management team to plan detailed budgets for expenditure of grants, taking account both of the objects of the grantor and also the goals that the team seeks to achieve with the grant; Where you are raising funds from funders outside of the UK, work with the Director (General Counsel) to shape planned expenditure so that it is legally compliant while furthering casework goals; Administer and accurately record and store documentation relating to all grants received, ensuring that all grant conditions are noted, adhered to and recorded on Raisers Edge; Monitor and evaluate organisational impact from grants received, and forecast potential impact and outcomes achievable from grant funding; Provide reports on activities and income to the Senior Management team when requested. General Assist the Executive Director, Director, and Deputy Director of Development and Outreach as required; Be an active member of the Development and Outreach team; contributing to meetings, mucking in with tasks and working closely with other members of the team; Ensure Reprieve s donor management system (Raisers Edge) and file management system (Concordance) are accurate and up-to-date with all communications; Keep abreast of changes, trends and regulations within the charity sector and across fundraising; Represent Reprieve and its aims both face-to-face and in written communications to supporters at all levels; 3

4 Other roles as requested which may include, but not be limited to, drafting other communications, assisting in researching major donors and helping ensure the smooth running of events. Key Contacts Reporting to the Deputy Director of Development and Outreach, internally you will work closely with the two other Development and Outreach Officers, the Database Officer, Executive Director, staff across Reprieve, our partners and Fellows. Externally you will build relationships with both current and prospective funders. Length and Salary The role is a full-time twelve-month role with the possibility of extension (funding dependent) based in Reprieve s London office during core office hours. The annual salary is 38,678 per annum less any required deductions for income tax and national insurance. 5 Person Specification CRITERIA Essential Desirable A genuine interest in human rights and a commitment to Reprieve s goals Eligible to live and work in the UK Minimum of 2 years experience of grant fundraising with a proven ability to generate and increase income from charitable foundations or statutory bodies, ideally both Track record of setting and meeting fundraising targets Demonstrably strong experience of producing high-quality funding applications (including budgets), reports and communications Proven experience of identifying, cultivating and recruiting new funders Excellent written and communication skills with the ability to engage and inspire often using technical and nuanced case studies; Ability to work independently, be self-sufficient and work well as part of a small team Brilliant organiser of yourself and others Ability to work creatively to create and maximise fundraising opportunities Ability to manage a budget including budget setting, forecasting and analysis with regular reporting against target Interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with internal and external contacts, including connecting with funders from a range of backgrounds; Knowledge of the charity sector, trends, best practice and applicable legal and regulatory matters including data protection Ability to work harmoniously and creatively in a small team, and a willingness to muck in and help your colleagues during busy periods 5
