The Foundation has operated with charitable, education and social welfare goals to benefit the public and private sectors of community life. Resources raised through out the Board's work are given to support Sarasota County's 4-H program for educational and leadership training scholarships and events such as horse and livestock judging, Awards and Recognition Night, youth demonstrations and public speaking awards, University of Florida state competitions, regional horse shows, leadership training at Florida Legislature Week, Washington Focus and National 4-H Congress. School enrichment projects funded by the Foundation include a radish growing program involving over 2,000 school children, as well as, marine and environmental science programs. The Foundation has annually awarded senior 4-H members with college scholarships and increased the endowment fund. Sarasota County 4-H Foundation Board members are committed to the mission of the 4- H Foundation and give of their time, expertise, influence and financial support. Statement from the Board Chair We are proud of the Foundation's support of the local 4-H program and outreach projects to students in Sarasota County. All members work diligently conducting fundraising events. These events raised funds that sent more children to camp, strengthened our scholarship program, grew our endowment fund, and provided educational hands-on learning experiences for local youth. 5 PROGRAMS Radish Growing Description 4-H programs, curriculum, resources, etc are provided to traditional 4-H Clubs as well as public, private, and home school organizations. Providing these resources seeks to create partnerships with other youth development organizations to coordinate programs which meet the needs of area youth. Examples of topics range from school gardens with radish growing competitions to Tropicana Public Speaking and healthy living and STEM emphases. Some programs are executed within the school while others take place after hours and during the summer. Budget $3, Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Short Term Success Long Term Success Program Success Monitoring Program Success Examples Youth Development, General/Other Youth Agriculture Children Only (5-14 years) Families Adults Youth become critical thinkers with first-hand knowledge of agricultural practices through the planting, growing, and harvesting of radish plants. Sarasota 4-H provides participating schools with radish seeds, record books, and concise instructions for the successful completion of this 21 day project. This short, hands-on experience allows youth the opportunity to apply and understand the scientific method. Youth develop their hypothesizing, observing & measuring, analyzing, documenting, and effectively communicating their results. Youth also gain a sense of accomplishment through the personal responsibility of caring for and maintaining a plant. With this program, youth learn from where food comes and gain insight into its production. This knowledge can be applied to their own gardening and/or livestock project or if one wanted to grow their own crops for feed. Acquiring this information allows youth the opportunity to explore the wideworld of agriculture related careers ranging from raising livestock, trees, and/or bees to certifying environmentally friendly farms. It also fosters a conversation about food security and the importance of conserving farmland. While radish growing is a small program, it uses this hands-on approach as do most 4-H programs, to foster much larger conversations about using our Head for clearer thinking with our choices; using our Heart when working together to achieve specific goals; using our Hands for larger service when caring about the impact and consequences of our actions; using our Health to ensure healthy environments, healthy diets, healthy living for our community, country, and world. At the culmination of the program, surveys are dispursed to participating schools. Youth also submit their record books, which exhibits their theories, observations, and conclusions about the project. They also include photographs of the progression of their project. At the end of the program, youth submit their record book with the radish plants. Youth starting their own garden; learning to prepare healthy meals; sharing this project with their family- family support & engagement in the planting, observing, and harvesting process; learn effective recording, measuring, etc... skills (scientific method). 5
6 Scholarships Description 4-H Scholarships are provided to 4-H youth for district, regional, state and national level events. Scholarships are awarded for state and regional horse shows, shooting sports and livestock judging events, state competition activities at the University of Florida, leadership training at 4-H Legislature at the State Capitol and Washington Focus at the National 4-H Center, Camp Cloverleaf summer camp and horticultural, marine science, and dairy camps. Without the scholarships provided by the Foundation many 4-H members would not have the opportunity to attend these events. In addition college scholarships are awarded to Senior members for outstanding leadership, community service and life skills learned through 4-H. Budget $25, Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Short Term Success Long Term Success Youth Development, General/Other Youth Leadership K-12 (5-19 years) Adolescents Only (13-19 years) Scholarships allow children educational, leadership and confidencebuilding opportunities that would not be available without this financial support. New perspectives and social growth come from interaction with other youth at statewide and national events. Being able to attend diverse 4-H training, leadership events and collegee gives our youth pathways to future success as our community's business people, educators, leaders and involved citizens. Program Success Monitoring Sarasota County usually leads the state in the highest number of 4-H members attending 4-H Congress at the University of Florida. This is a week-long event for leadership and competition activities. The Foundation's scholarships make it possible for more youth to attend. Sarasota County has a large number of campers able to go to a week long summer camp, because of Foundation scholarships. Eleven senior 4- H members received college scholarship in June Program Success Examples Sarasota County 4-H members have successfully competed at local, district, state, and national competitions with the help of Foundation scholarships. These scholarships helped with training and travel expenses. In the past 4 years, two Sarasota County 4-H members were elected president of the State 4-H organization. Many other members have received achievement recognition in state competitions. 4-H scholarship recipients have become productive citizens and leaders. Comments Program Comments by Organization All supported programs focus on youth development through a process of learning by doing. Leadership, community pride and self-esteem are critical life skills gained through these programs. 6

We are addressing this challenge by presenting our Foundation Showcase, highlighting the mission, accomplishments, and activities of the organization. The Showcase was set up and staffed with Board members throughout the county fair. Through this outreach potential members and volunteers become familiar with the Foundation. The Showcase will be presented at various community functions throughout the year. Meet and Greet meetings will follow Showcase sessions. Another challenge is to complete the Governance Committee's job of writing procedures and guidelines for members. The Governance Committee will continue writing guidelines and procedures for the general membership. These guidelines help with training new members and continuing the education of present members. The new guidelines and procedures have helped as a quick reference when questions have arisen. 9
