FTI Pilot - What is it? The FTI pilot is the only fully-bottom-up measure in Horizon 2020 promoting close-to-the-market innovation activities that is open to all types of participants
FTI Pilot First cut off results A total of 269 proposals were submitted in response to this first cut off Country par'cipa'on 0 AT BE BG CY CZ DE DK EL ES FI FR HR HU IE IL IT MT NL NO PL PT RO SE SI SK TR UK Final H2020- FTIPilot
The FAST TRACK To INNOVATION pilot (open in 2015) supports projects undertaking innovation from the demonstration stage through to market uptake 1. It covers piloting, test-beds, validation in real world/working conditions, pre-normative research and standard-setting 2. It targets relatively mature new technologies, concepts, processes and business models that need a last development step to reach the market and wider deployment
A maximum of 5 legal entities can participate in an FTTI project. At least one of the following minimum conditions shall be met: either o at least 60% of the overall budget of the proposal must be allocated to consortium partner(s) from industry Or the minimum number of industry participants must be 2 in a consortium of 3 or 4 partners, and 3 in a consortium of 5 partners. The maximum EU contribution per project is EUR 3 million. Proposals shall relate to the specific objective 'Leadership in enabling and industrial technologies' and/or to any of the specific objectives under the priority 'Societal challenges'. A proposal must include a business plan. For this pilot phase of the FTI, only applications involving entities all of whom must be established in the EU Member States or countries associated to Horizon 2020 are eligible.
Proposals with an overall initial score lower than 12/15 will not be ranked Proposals with an initial score lower than 4/5 for impact will not be ranked; For the proposals that will be ranked, "Impact" will receive a higher weighting Criteria for further differentiation will be: Value of 'Impact' criterion Size of budget allocated to SMEs Number of first-time industry applicants Number of industry participants Gender balance of consortium staff performing the proposed action
Breakdown of Phase Activity
Business opportunity At the end of Phase 2, par-cipa-ng companies should have developed a NEW Innova'on led idea (product, process, service) that can be deployed and launched on the market. The business innova-on plan III to be developed by the end of Phase 2 will contain a detailed marke-ng and commercialisa-on strategy and a financing plan describing how private investment will be used

Topic Condi-ons and Documenta-on
Here are 6 lessons the Commission learnt from this very first evalua-on exercise that we think can be useful for the future applicants. Most of the non- selected proposals were: Too much focused on the project and not enough on the business opportunity; Not convincing when describing the company (you have to explain why your company will succeed and not your compe-tor); Not providing enough informa-on on compe'ng solu'ons; Having a too low level of innova'on, planning to develop a product that already exists on the market; Proposing just an idea without any concept for its commercialisa'on; Just trying their luck (the SME Instrument is not a lomery!). If you keep these 6 points in mind when drating your proposal, you may have higher chances to succeed.
What your proposal should demonstrate Demonstrate that your project has a European or Interna'onal dimension Demonstrate that your project will generate revenue and create employment Once you decide to apply, be convincing in ALL aspects Ensure your proposal is well balanced and covers all aspects of evalua-on criteria Don t forget to provide a convincing commercialisa-on plan Your proposal should demonstrate a thorough knowledge of your target market Your proposal should demonstrate a clear ambi'on to grow at EU level Check that your project is in line with work programme objec'ves Invest 'me and effort in your proposal, do not trust in luck Think big funding isn t aimed at developing products that already exist or are incremental developments of same.
