2 Asking for Donations: Where Does Your Money Really Go? When the phone rings and it's a charity calling asking you to donate, you might want to think twice before saying yes, even if it's a group you want to support. Why? Chances are, most of the money you give will go to the company that's soliciting you -- not the charity itself. It's a profitable business.
3 Asking for Donations: Where Does Your Money Really Go? In 2013, they raised $389 million, of that, only $185 million went to charities. However not all solicitors are created equal. Several delivered about 13 cents of every donated dollar to the charity. One gave 90 cents on the dollar.
4 Asking for Donations: Where Does Your Money Really Go? The 50 worst charities in America devote less than 4% of donations raised to direct cash aid. Some charities give even less. The tax records of 6,000 charities revealed that for 50 U.S. charities, an alleged 11 cents or less of each dollar donated went to the actual cause. The majority of the groups included on the list utilize telephone solicitation to gather a majority of their profits. Other techniques include mimicking the names of reliable charities such as breast cancer or children s cancer" were also found to be common. 6 Problem Statement #1 - Donors Even reputable institutions fail to inform, in advance, how the donations will be spent. They state the contributions are tax-deductible. Some charities do a good job disclosing expenditures in their annual reports, while others institutions fall short of reaching the goal.
7 Problem Statement #2 - Charities Ask yourself a simple question: which charities are doing a good job or even a great job? When you have settled on a few chosen organizations, ask yourself what evidence you have for that. And when you think of organizations doing a great job, do you have specific facts and figures in your head about them? So if we want people to support charities with their money and goodwill, then we have to help charities get better at measuring, and communicating their impact.
8 Problem Statement #3 - Charities The assumption seems to be that donors should have to make the running in making a gift to the organization a very dangerous assumption, indeed. One remedy would be to adopt a proactive attitude and make sure that staff members are alert to opportunities to engage potential donors who demonstrate a strong interest in the institution s programs.
9 Problem Statement #4 - Charities Here is an issue that could be especially relevant for charities in countries where there are a sizeable number of charities seeking funds in a relatively small marketplace. Depending on their cause, such organizations should seriously consider fundraising globally.

12 Motivation: Why do people give? Researchers have looked into why people donate. They found out that giving is fundamentally a social act. When donors see that the donor before them has made a large donation, they make a larger donation themselves. Another study shows that people give significantly more to causes suggested by friends. But It s not just our friends and families who can influence us. It was found that celebrity supporters increase donations to charity faster than anonymous fundraisers, but that this only appears to work for people who have donated to the charity before. I want to see my donations going to the worthiest causes, but I don t have much time to research charities on line. Goals: Share these causes with friends who might want to donate time or money. Demonstrate my support via financial donations and/or sharing the message. Needs: An organized, streamlined place to view charities and programs. An easy way to donate. An easy way to share causes and opportunities with others. Ananta, Businessman Age: Ann Harbor, MI. Ananta is a philanthropist who works in the financial sector. His motivation for giving comes from a sense of social duty. However he doesn t attach his giving to a particular geography. He s also motivated by social capital, and the prestige of having his name on the donation boards. I want to find new ways of solving social problems Goals: Wants a platform that enables him to choose a cause in the States and overseas. Wants to find a charity he can trust because it reflects on him as a supporter. Needs: Clearly laid out information telling him about certain causes and opportunities available. A simple way to donate money so simple he could even send it to friends Taylor, Designer. Age: Chicago, IL Taylor is design researcher, she approaches every fundraising project with a design consulting mindset. She has been successful in helping many fundraising clients achieve their goals. She always wanted to invest in her surrounding communities, and provide her friends with a resource to do the same. I think if we shake up our way of thinking, we could make a lot of positive changes in a larger scale. Goals: Scope out funding/giving opportunities for friends and co-workers. Determine areas of weakness that need assistance, so that I can provide the best service to her clients. Needs: A place for her to collaborate with others in creating some new programs. Easy way to share ideas via social media. Links I could send out by mass mailer. Bethany, Retired Teacher Age: Milwaukee, WI. Bethany is a retired school teacher, with more than 30 years of experience. She has seen a lot of changes in the education system from the time she started until now. But one of the things that hasn t changed is the fact that kids need guidance inside and outside of the classroom. I want to demonstrate to kids that they have options and ways to play to their strengths. Goals: Guide students in identifying their passions, interests, and future careers. Provide students with a range of afterschool opportunities. Needs: Raise money and awareness for existing programs. I need a platform that has a clear path for how to get from A to B. Please don t make this difficult.
