At Anglo American, we recognise the importance of engaging and collaborating with the communities in which we operate to create a better South Africa for all.
MAKES A View of the activity in the main Leeufontein pit at Kolomela Iron Ore Mine.
BUSINESS UNIT PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS Kumba R254 million Total mine community development expenditure Platinum R204 million Total mine community development expenditure Coal R162,2 million Total mine community development expenditure De Beers R51,5 million Total mine community development expenditure In 2013, we spent R739 million on social investment.
OUR CSI FOCUS AREAS Policy and advocacy Our CSI policies and advocacy are underpinned by our moral obligation to contribute to the transformation of the mining industry and the country as a whole. Thought leadership We aim to be at the forefront of global thought leadership in alleviating poverty, promoting health and education and fostering community development. Our business units have already achieved the Mining Charter s 2014 minimum target of 26% BEE ownership to enable meaningful economic participation of HDSAs as in the mining industry. Our groundbreaking R3,5 billion community trust scheme in Anglo American Platinum Ltd will benefit communities and labour-sending areas in an enduring 30-year partnership. Health Our CSI activities in health include working towards the prevention of HIV/AIDS, strengthening primary healthcare and providing meaningful and effective healthcare and support to our employees and the communities in which we operate. We pledged R24,63 million over three years to both the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisations (GAVI). Education Our education- related CSI initiatives include: supporting early childhood development, improving maths, science and language skills, teacher and learner development, developing infrastructure for rural primary schools and supporting schools for learners with special needs. More than 1,400 employees, contractors and community members have enrolled in adult basic education and training programmes offered by our business units. Sustainable community development Our CSI activities relating to sustainable community development include providing welfare support, working towards sustainable livelihoods through skills training and job creation and supporting capacity building for enterprise development.
Soil for Life, an initiative of our Chairman s Fund educates and trains people in organic food gardening by using lowcost, soil building, water-wise and environmentally friendly technologies. We recognise that it takes a sustained effort to bring about meaningful change.
OUR APPROACH TO SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT At Anglo American we recognise the importance of engaging and working in collaboration with the communities in which we operate. Therefore, we continue to play a meaningful role in mine community development, guided not only by the Mining Charter and our associated social and labour plans (SLPs) but, importantly, also by our corporate citizenship principles. We pride ourselves on the level of direct participation we continue to see in the communities that are affected by our mining operations, and the benefits that this is generating. We have embarked on extensive initiatives to develop mine communities and labour-sending areas. Our business units spent more than R671,7 million on various community development initiatives (including corporate social investment) in 2013 alone. These initiatives contribute directly to progressing SLP commitments, which are aligned to municipal integrated development plans (IDPs). Every one of our operations has an SLP, which works specifically towards establishing and improving health and welfare, education and infrastructure within our mining communities. These plans are developed through a consultative process with local municipalities as well as through regular interaction with host communities to ensure that the identified projects are sustainable and in line with their needs. However, our initiatives are broader than just our SLPs, and we have enjoyed a number of enterprise development and CSI successes, including some projects that would normally be the responsibility of municipalities. We have also experienced great success in certain areas where we contribute to communities, specifically in the fight against HIV/AIDS, where more than 90% of our employees on average check their HIV status annually through our voluntary workplace HIV counselling and testing programmes. More than 75% of HIV positive employees are receiving HIV treatment via our programme and are living healthy productive lives.
ZIMELE Zimele is Anglo American s enterprise development initiative and is a catalyst for emerging black businesses in South Africa. The initiative supports sustainable and commercially viable small and medium enterprises through the provision of skills training and funding. Zimele comprises of six funds: the Anglo American sefa Mining Fund, the Supply Chain Fund, the Community Fund, the Green Fund, the Sebenza Fund and Godisa Fund, all of which have a key focus of creating employment and small business opportunities within the communities in which we operate and beyond. THE CHAIRMAN S FUND: MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR OVER 60 YEARS The Anglo American s Chairman s Fund is one of the dedicated instruments through which the companies in the Anglo American Group in South Africa channel their social investment spend. The vision of the Chairman s Fund is to bring about real, sustainable and meaningful social change through adopting an inclusive approach to community development funding. As the oldest professionally managed social investment programme in the country, the Chairman s Fund dates back to the late 1950s and over the years has developed a reputation for being one of the most inclusive funders in South Africa and a partner of choice in development. Focus areas include early childhood development, maths, science, teacher development, infrastructure for rural schools, HIV/Aids prevention, public healthcare, welfare support, livelihoods and community development.
Joseph Kente established Vukani Musa Construction with the help of the Zimele Hub in Kathu. Here he is at one of the schools his company built.
Newly constructed houses in the Boicheko area for employees of Kolomela Mine. The Boicheko housing project is situated in the nearby town of Postmasburg.
BUILDING HOMES, RESTORING DIGNITY At Anglo American we believe that human dignity, privacy and family life are essential to achieving real transformation. That is why we have made significant strides in improving the housing and living conditions of our employees. At the end of 2013, just over 1,370 employees (2,163. in 2012), mainly in our Platinum business, were sharing a room with one other person (maximum occupancy of two per room). We are working hard to meet the Mining Charter s target occupancy of one person per room by As part of our broader strategy to address the issues of housing and living conditions of our employees, our business units offer employees housing support options, which include the provision of bulk services, building houses, rent-to-buy options and company-owned housing stock. Various allowances are also available to help employees with repayments.
A student at the Iona Covent, a school that benefits from the work done by Sisters of Mercy. Sisters of Mercy is an organisation funded by our Chairman s Fund.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING While Anglo American undertakes a range of social investment initiatives in various areas, education remains a key focus area, and includes bursaries, scholarships, skills training and learnerships. EDUCATION AND THE YOUTH: CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR TOMORROW S LEADERS As part of our commitment to supporting education and developing South Africa s youth, Anglo American supports IkamvaYouth, a non-profit organisation that equips learners from disadvantaged communities with the knowledge, skills, networks and resources to access tertiary education and employment opportunities once they matriculate. BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS: HELPING GRADUATES AND STUDENTS ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS The Anglo American Group seeks to be the employer of choice for graduates and students. We believe that attracting and retaining the right people will help us achieve our position as a leading global mining company. Our business units run programmes and schemes tailored to meet their unique requirements. As part of our initiative to support and encourage tertiary education, we offer work experience opportunities to bursars and to other selected undergraduates whose studies are directly relevant to our business through our Student Technical Experience Programme. If you are a graduate who would like to join Anglo American, or if you are a student and need financial assistance, visit
SKILLS TRAINING: ASSISTING OUR PEOPLE TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL We recognise that a workforce with the right skills, experience and training is one of the country s most basic needs, and we invest a great deal of resources developing the skills of our employees. More than 1,400 employees, contractors and community members in South Africa have enrolled in adult basic education and training (ABET) programmes, which are offered by our business units to help those individuals acquire basic literacy and numeracy skills. GIVING COMMUNITY MEMBERS ACCESS TO EDUCATION TO REACH THEIR POTENTIAL In addition to providing skills training to our employees, Anglo American also provides training for artisans not employed by the Group. For example, through the Tshipi Skills Training Centre, Kumba Iron Ore has helped equip almost 3,000 members of the community through its Sishen Mine in the Northern Cape with a range of practical skills. We have also established partnerships with the Department of Correctional Services to train inmates for reintegration into society and with the National Defence Force to train ex-soldiers. To read more about our other education and training initiatives, visit During 2013, we invested R1,05 billion in direct training activities and supported more than 2,845 bursars, apprentices, graduates and other trainees.
