1 LEADERSHIP PROFILE Executive Director Year Up Chicago, Illinois To close the Opportunity Divide by providing urban young adults with the skills, experience, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education. ~ Year Up Mission THE OPPORTUNITY Year Up is an award-winning, national non-profit which guides urban, year young adults from poverty to a profession in the span of one year. Year Up Chicago is seeking an Executive Director able to leverage the existing strength of the organization and effectively and rapidly scale the program to increase its impact on Chicago's young adults. Year Up recognizes that the Opportunity Divide specifically, historical barriers to education and professional work is driven by race, ethnicity, national origin and socio-economic status. Year Up seeks to close the divide by offering young adults marketable technical and professional skills in a setting of high expectations and high support that prepares them for professional careers and further education.

2 Page 2 of 9 The new Executive Director will build on the foundation created in Year Up Chicago s first five years and will lead the local organization to its next level of impact. Since 2010, Year Up Chicago has graduated 265 young professionals whose drive, talent and leadership has made a major impact in the city. Currently 85% of graduates secure jobs paying an average starting salary of $34,000 a year or enroll in school full-time. By early 2016, the new Executive Director is expected to have created the conditions for growth through new channels including the Professional Training Corps (a community-college partnership), and employer-based models. Chicago serves 160 young adults annually, with a plan to increase to at least 240 students annually in early The national organization and the local Chicago board have aligned visions for a vibrant future for this market. The Executive Director will execute a demand-driven strategy with corporate partners to expand the number of partners and rapidly scale the number of interns at any one partner. The Chicago team has a portfolio of over 50 corporate partners, with over half of Year Up s revenue earned as fee-for-service. This requires that the program strive to meet corporate demand to achieve sustainability and to scale its services to create opportunity for more young adults. Corporate partners include JP Morgan Chase, Google, Hyatt, Allstate, Salesforce.com, Accenture and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Expansion opportunities also exist in partnership with City College of Chicago and are slated for This new scalable channel is part of the Professional Training Corps program in which Year Up works in partnership with community colleges to deliver technical training to Year Up students.

He or she will build on Year Up Chicago s record and momentum, creatively address challenges, create opportunities and inspire the organization to fulfill its mission. As the programs scales, the Executive Director will also advocate clearly and persuasively with potential donors and community partners to expand support and fundraising opportunities to ensure the success of the organization and the programs that serve the young adults of Year Up. He or she will have the energy, abilities and capacity to secure resources to ensure the continued growth and the successful operational performance of the Chicago site. In tandem with meeting growth and performance mandates, he or she will be a credible voice with the ability to advocate effectively for how Year Up expands opportunities for young adults and meets a market need. The Executive Director will be a servant leader with a passion for working with urban young adults and an unshakable belief in their potential. He or she will be a tireless advocate for the students of Year Up with evidence of a commitment to solving the challenges of urban young adults. THE ORGANIZATION Year Up was founded in 2000 in Boston, Massachusetts by former business executive, now social entrepreneur, Gerald Chertavian. It has rapidly become a nationally-recognized program with proven results. Chertavian s vision for Year Up was shaped while in college when he volunteered as a mentor and Big Brother to low-income youth. He was impressed by the ambition and talents of the young people he came to know, but witnessed there

4 Page 4 of 9 were few avenues for them in the mainstream economy. A combination of limited or poor educational opportunities and a lack of exposure to the culture of corporate America prevented many from entering the economic mainstream. Year Up was established to bridge this Opportunity Divide. Year Up provides a one year training program to low-income urban young adults, ages 18-24, who have a high school diploma or equivalent (General Equivalency Degree). The program is a unique combination of hands-on technical and professional skills, college credit, and corporate internship experience. Since its inception, Year Up s high-expectation, high-support program has combined marketable job skills, stipends, corporate internships and college credits. It addresses students social and emotional development and provides appropriate support to place young adults on a path to economic selfsufficiency. During the first six months, students attend intense, classroom-based career training in Information Technology or Finance at Year Up, learning technical and professional skills that prepare them for success in a corporate environment. During the second six months, Year Up students gain experience in internships with leading corporate partners who pay for the internship placement. After graduation, students are supported in their job search and in building their professional networks through Year Up s local and national alumni associations, as well as through Year Up Professional Resources, a wholly-owned staffing firm that serves alumni. As a national model for economic and social impact, the Year Up program gives companies a cost-effective solution for recruiting entry-level employees, while providing young adults with an essential stepladder for career success. Year Up has proven results: 100% placement of qualified Year Up students into internships. Over 90% of Corporate Partners would recommend Year Up to a friend or colleague.

5 Page 5 of 9 85% of graduates are gainfully employed or attending college full-time within four months of completing the program. Employed Year Up graduates starting wage averages more than $17 per hour - the equivalent of $34,000 per year. Year Up has been recognized at the national level through participation in the Clinton Global Initiative, site visits from President Obama and other senior policymakers, and a recent feature on 60 Minutes which exposed some 15 million people to the Year Up story. This recognition has triggered growth opportunities in every city, including Chicago. National recognition also includes: Rated one of the Top 10 non-profits in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. One of the 50 Best Nonprofits to Work For by the NonProfit Times (2011 and 2012). Fast Company Magazine s Social Capitalist Award for innovative business model and social impact in 2005, 2007 and In 2009, the Harvard Business School published a case study on Year Up s origins and success. With a national operating budget of $70 million, Year Up will serve more than 2,100 students in 2014 across 11 sites: Atlanta, Chicago, New York City, Providence, Bay Area (San Francisco and Silicon Valley), Seattle and Washington, D.C., and Year Up community college-based Professional Training Corps (PTC) sites located in Miami, Baltimore and Philadelphia, with launches underway in Jacksonville and Phoenix. 6 Page 6 of 9 THE RESPONSIBILITIES The Executive Director will develop and execute a comprehensive, multichannel, scalable strategy that enables Year Up to be the partner of choice for entry-level talent in the greater Chicago area. The Executive Director will: 1. Provide vision and leadership. The Executive Director will be a valuesdriven, inspirational leader with high emotional intelligence. She or he will inspire confidence and provide collaborative, forward-thinking leadership to ensure continued growth and impact in Chicago and the surrounding region. 2. Expand strategic partnerships and the corporate partner base while achieving fundraising goals and building capacity. Year Up Chicago has opportunities that require additional financial resources, partnerships and investment. The Executive Director will lead the team to accomplish ambitious goals. He or she must lead in articulating the value proposition to donors, corporate partners, and strategic partners in education to develop and strengthen Year Up s leadership position in the region. 3. Be accountable for financial management. Prior management of a P&L is valuable experience for success in the role. The Executive Director will promote ambitious yet disciplined growth with clear organizational priorities, a sensible management structure and emphasis on strategic management of resources. 4. Be a credible and compelling advocate. The Executive Director will be a powerful presenter and advocate for Closing the Opportunity Divide. He or she will advocate vigorously and effectively for students and the program. The Executive Director will be adept at connecting with others in an authentic and caring way, whether a student or a CEO, and help each of these stakeholders appreciate the benefit of the other s success.

7 Page 7 of 9 5. Manage a large and complex organization. The Executive Director must lead performance management, with strong executive leadership, clear objectives and accountability for the team. The Executive Director must ensure that the organization hits growth and performance targets and will create and pursue market opportunities. She or he will ensure that the organization leverages systems, resources, structures and personnel to support effective internal and external activities. Hiring, developing and retaining talent is critical to Year Up Chicago s success, as is working to create an organization that reflects the communities it serves. 6. Oversee program management. The Executive Director will understand and maximize the performance of every component of the site s program activities to ensure the highest level of performance for admissions, academics, student services, internships, job placement and alumni services. 7. Provide organizational leadership. The Executive Director is a member of Year Up s organization-wide Management Committee, participates in the organization s quarterly Strategy Sessions and is periodically called upon to join teams who shape long-term organizational strategy at the National level. THE CANDIDATE The ideal candidate has the drive, motivation, commitment and experience to manage a growth-based organization. The Chicago ED must also be an externally-facing leader for Year Up and the students it serves. The ideal candidate will have: a passion for working with urban young adults, an unshakable belief in their potential and a strong commitment to the mission of Year Up a track record of driving organizational growth through new market opportunities and expanding partnerships
