Through the professional relationships built in the Chamber, your service and product can be spread either through word-ofmouth, and the phone calls and s that the Chamber receives from prospective customers and our online business directory. Our Chamber only refers Chamber Members! What the New Year brings to you depends greatly on what you bring to the New Year. - Vern McLellan In This Issue After Conference Rule For more information, please contact Grace Waits at director@screvencounty.com or at (912) Business Spotlight MLK Day Annual Banquet Costume Ideas Awards American Pickers New Members/Upcoming Cal-
New after-conference rule: the 2-to-1 Yes it was fun to be part of that conference, but once you get home, it s time to implement. As you plan out conferences you want to attend this year, here s a new rule to consider for after the event: The 2-to-1 rule: Schedule two days for implementation for every one day of the conference. Your implementation days don t have to be, and probably shouldn t be, all right after the event. Spread them out so you have a chance to keep up with other demands. They don t even have to be full days. You can schedule half days, hours or even 20 minute blocks, as long as they add up to the same amount of working time. What will you do in those implementation sessions? Well, the first session can be to go over your notes from the conference and pick out action items to work on.
Member: Town of Newington Town Clerk: Vonette Perkins Address: P.O. Box 268, Newington, Ga The Town of Newington has been a member of the Chamber for many years The Chamber is a great resource of information and keeps us informed of local events. How has being a Chamber member helped the Town of Newington? Can you tell our readers about Newington s community projects, such as the Newington Heritage Society, and other projects in your town? The Town is currently working with the Newington Heritage Society on constructing a park on Industrial Blvd. The park, when completed, will have a half-court basketball court, benches and landscaping. The Newington Heritage Society recently sponsored Christmas on the Square, a free family event on Broad Street. Why should people support local businesses and their Chamber? Everyone should support their local chamber of commerce and businesses. I don t believe you can emphasize enough how important it is to support our local businesses. The local businesses are what keep the Town and surrounding communities going. The Chamber has so much local, regional and national information available to them and we need to take advantage of this resource. What inspires you to be involved with the daily administration of the Town of Newington? I enjoy my job as the clerk for the Town of Newington. As with most any job, it can be quite stressful at times. The customers that I see every month and the people that I work with daily are the reason I can look forward to my job each day. All the employees of the Town have to be able to do many different jobs in order for things to run along each day. Each and every day brings a new challenge to all the employees. What are the challenges currently facing your town? The Town faces challenges like most small rural towns do, mostly financial. The Town Council tries to keep the Water/ Sewage bills and Property tax millage rate down to a reasonable amount because most of our citizens are low-income, retired or on a fixed income. The Mayor and Council have to make decisions not only on what is happening today but also what is to come in the next year or five years. Is there anything about your town that you feel citizens don t realize, but should be aware of? There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that people are not aware of and that s okay. We are a business and there is a multitude of decisions that have to be made every day. I would like for the citizens to know that the Mayor and Council are not paid for their services, it is totally volunteer. When you see them, please take just a moment to say thank you.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service January 15, 2018 Dr. King believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all, and encouraged all citizens to live up to the purpose and potential of America by applying the principles of nonviolence to make this country a better place to live creating the Beloved Community. The MLK Day of Service is a way to transform Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. s life and teachings into community action that helps solve social problems. That service may meet a tangible need, or it may meet a need of the spirit. On this day, Americans of every age and background celebrate Dr. King through service projects that strengthen communities, empower individuals, bridge barriers, and create solutions. Contact the United Way of Screven County at for a list of organizations where you can volunteer.
AMERICAN PICKERS to Film in Georgia! Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz, and their team are excited to return to Georgia! They plan to film episodes of the hit series AMERICAN PICKERS throughout the region this Winter! AMERICAN PICKERS is a documentary series that explores the fascinating world of antique picking on History. The hit show follows Mike and Frank, two of the most skilled pickers in the business, as they hunt for America s most valuable antiques. They are always excited to find sizeable, unique collections and learn the interesting stories behind them. As they hit the back roads from coast to coast, Mike and Frank are on a mission to recycle and rescue forgotten relics. Along the way, the Pickers want to meet characters with remarkable and exceptional items. The pair hopes to give historically significant objects a new lease on life, while learning a thing or two about America s past along the way. Mike and Frank have seen a lot of rusty gold over the years and are always looking to discover something they ve never seen before. They are ready to find extraordinary items and hear fascinating tales about them. AMERICAN PICKERS is looking for leads and would love to explore your hidden treasure.
