3 South London Gallery The South London Gallery (SLG) is a locally, nationally and internationally recognised centre for contemporary visual art with an acclaimed and award-winning education and outreach programme. The gallery opened on its present site on Peckham Road in 1891 as the South London Fine Art Gallery and Library. Its founding mission to bring art to the people of south London is a vision which continues to hold true to this day, with a particular emphasis, over the past twenty years, in showing challenging new work by emerging and established British and international artists. The gallery s beautifully proportioned and high-ceilinged Victorian exhibition space is now complemented by a suite of buildings in a previously derelict neighbouring house and a purpose built extension which opened to the public in Offering a rich programme of exhibitions, film, performance, artist commission and residencies, together with innovative education and outreach projects, the SLG aspires to be internationally recognised for excellence and innovation, and to enhancing the quality of life in the local area. The SLG s successes in recent years, led by the gallery s director Margot Heller, have resulted from the organisation's capacity for excellence and risk-taking in contemporary visual arts programming, combined with its emphasis on inspiring new as well as established audiences through highly regarded education and outreach programmes. In the five year period following the gallery s 2010 expansion, staff numbers more than tripled whilst the gallery transformed in scale, profile and impact with annual visitor numbers increasing more than five-fold from 25,000 to over 130,000. The South London Gallery is a registered charity and receives annual income from funders Arts Council England, as a National Portfolio Organisation, and Southwark Council, while the remainder is raised from a range of sources including statutory funds, individual donations, corporate sponsorship and trusts.

4 The former Peckham Road Fire Station On 22 September 2018 we will open a second site in the former Peckham Road Fire Station, across the road from the SLG s main site. Dating from 1867 and the earliest surviving example of a purpose-built fire station in London, the derelict, four-storey building is being transformed into a new cultural centre, enabling the SLG to expand its programme, create a publically accessible archive and deliver a range of focused activities. This new development will enable the SLG to respond to increasing demand for its programmes, simultaneously ensuring that the Fire Station will be preserved for future generations to enjoy and provide much-needed free public space at a time of rapid change in the local area. The SLG has been awarded funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Mayor of London and others to enable the SLG to restore the building, deliver an extensive archive and heritage programme and open the building to the public. 5 Job Description Job Title: Head of Development Period: Fixed Term up to December Start date negotiable, ideally mid/late November 2018 Hours: Negotiable, ideally hours per week Salary: c. 40,000 per annum pro rata Pension: 6% employer pension contribution Holiday: 26 days pro rata plus bank holidays Reports to: Director Responsible for: Line manages the Head of Communications and Development Manager and oversees the development duties of the PA to the Director Place of Work: South London Gallery, 65/67 Peckham Road, London, SE5 8UH The appointment is subject to a satisfactory DBS check. We are particularly interested in applicants from low-income backgrounds and those from black and ethnic minority communities, who are under-represented in museums and galleries. Purpose of Role: The Head of Development oversees fundraising across the South London Gallery, including artistic, education, running and capital costs. With the Director, the Head of Development sets the development strategy for the gallery incorporating statutory funds; trusts, foundations, lottery and embassies; individuals; corporates; events and venue hire; and works closely with the development team, Director and Deputy Director to implement, monitor and evaluate the strategy. The postholder is responsible for ensuring the organisation maintains impeccable relationships with supporters and potential donors, and works closely with the Director to ensure targets for capital and revenue projects are met. As a member of the management team, the postholder contributes to organisational strategy, planning and governance. The Head of Development line manages the Development Manager and Head of Communications and supervises the development duties of the PA to the Director. Key Tasks and Responsibilities Strategy, Management and Planning be an active member of the management team and contribute to the gallery s strategic objectives; devise and lead on the implementation of the gallery s fundraising strategy, working closely with the Director on planning and setting realistic targets; oversee the effective management of relationships with all donors and supporters;

6 involve the SLG s Development Committee in fundraising, including coordinating meetings, ensuring follow up on agreed actions and providing materials/support to help them with donor approaches; lead regular internal development meetings and develop effective working relationships across the organisation to identify fundraising opportunities for existing and new projects; line-manage the Development Manager and Head of Communications and, on occasion, freelance or casual fundraising staff, including setting objectives and monitoring performance to ensure postholders reach their potential and make a strong contribution to the SLG; ensure regular work-planning with the PA to the Director on coordination of the gallery s individual giving schemes, upkeep of the database, event coordination, and the Director s development-related meetings, contacts and follow-up; report to the Director and Deputy Director on annual income and expenditure targets; and work with communications colleagues and external designers to produce inspiring fundraising materials and clear messages about the gallery s work as a registered charity in print, online and at the gallery. Individual Giving and Fundraising Events oversee the gallery s portfolio of individual giving schemes including the SLG Council, Patrons, Benefactors and Members which are administered by the PA to the Director; ensure an effective cycle of relationships with donors and potential donors including the process for renewals, asks, thank yous, acknowledgement, delivery of donor benefits, and engagement in the work of the gallery; work closely with the PA to the Director to ensure the Director s donor relationships are effectively maintained; attend internal/external events to build donor relationships and be proactive in engaging donors in the life of the gallery and increasing membership levels; oversee an annual programme of supporter events, to be coordinated by the PA to the Director, including dinners after exhibition previews, studio tours and talks; and work with the Director on major fundraising events such as auctions and project launches. Corporate fundraising build relationships with existing and new corporate supporters including through corporate foundations, sponsorship, gallery supporters, corporate members, and in-kind support; work with the Director, Development Committee and external consultants where required, to cultivate and secure new corporate supporters including researching and approaching companies and drafting proposals and presentations; and oversee delivery of corporate benefits packages including brand recognition, private events and receptions underpinned by contractual agreements. Venue Hire work with colleagues to research, pilot and establish new income generation opportunities at the SLG s new venue at the Fire Station; and oversee the gallery s venue hire programme, coordinated on a day-to-day basis by the PA to the Director, and maximize the potential of the SLG s existing and new spaces for hire to reach annual targets. 7 lead on fundraising from Trusts, Foundations, government bodies, the Lottery, Embassies and other grant-giving bodies; oversee the work of the Development Manager who is responsible for the effective cycle of relationships with grant-giving bodies including research, cultivation, applications, stewardship, reporting and ensuring that conditions of support are met; and work with staff to initiate new funding partnerships and maintain positive relations with existing funders including organising visits, presentations and reports. Visitor Giving maximise donations from gallery visitors through onsite and online communications, the Fans/Members programme, donation box, Gift Aid on tickets, and public appeals; oversee fundraising inductions for new staff and regular briefings for front of house to increase visitor giving; and work with colleagues to encourage a culture of fundraising and raising the profile of the SLG as a registered charity. Systems, Finance and Governance manage expenditure budgets; ensure all donations and payments are logged, accompanied by appropriate paperwork and submitted to the finance team, and are in line with annual audit requirements; maximise opportunities for tax-effective giving from donors, gallery visitors, and ticket buyers, and ensure all individual giving schemes meet Gift Aid and Vat regulations; provide and/or seek legal and financial expertise regarding tax issues around charitable giving and ensure that fundraising data and communications comply with regulations and best practice, including the Fundraising Regulator and GDPR; work with the PA to the Director to ensure the gallery s smooth transition to a new database and that it is an up-to-date and effective fundraising tool; and provide quarterly fundraising reports to the Board of Trustees. General take responsibility for own administration, devise and implement appropriate processes and procedures to achieve agreed targets; maintain a commitment to training and professional development; be an advocate and effective representative of the SLG at professional events as well as private views and previews and evening and weekend events; have the ability to work evenings and weekends on a regular basis, for which TOIL (time of in lieu) will be given; attend relevant staff meetings; operate in accordance with the SLG s safeguarding, access and diversity, employment, health and safety, equal opportunities and other practices, policies and procedures; and undertaking other duties as may be reasonably required.
