8 4 year vs J.C. What s the 4 YEAR VS JC What s the difference? Junior College Examples: Modesto Junior College, Merced Community College, Delta Community College Anyone can attend May earn Associates Degree (2 years) or Vocational Ed Certificate. Designed as the first half of a 4 year education path. (2 years at JC, then transfer to finish 2 years at CSU or UC to earn a bachelors degree) Impacted (longer waitlists/harder to get classes) Lower cost; Financial Aid available. 4 Year University Must be A-G Eligible and take the SAT or ACT, minimum 2.0 GPA May earn a bachelor s degree (4 year degree) Bachelors degree s are required for most professional careers in your generation. Smaller waitlists (easier to get classes that you need) Costs vary by school but extensive financial aid is available for those who qualify Most students will qualify for some sort of financial aid Higher percentage of students who START at a CSU will FINISH and earn their degree! One difference between a Junior College and a 4 year college is:

12 CSU vs. UC What s the UC (4 year University) difference? Both are 4 year universities UC s are similar to CSU s but more competitive. Must be A-G Eligible and take the SAT or ACT IN ADDITION: For UC, must have a minimum requirement of 3.0 GPA to be able to apply; personal statement required and SAT II s recommended. Can be more expensive but more financial aid is available. Example the Blue and Gold grant pays for a students entire tuition and cost of school if their family earns less than $80,000 and the students meets academic qualifications (3.0, a-g eligibility, qualifying SAT/ACT scores)

13 Grade Point Average o A CSU/UC grade point average (GPA) is based on your grades in the A-G requirements completed during 10 th and 11 th grades o The GPA is titled weighted A-G and is what you will enter on college applications. CSU s require a minimum 2.0 UC s require a minimum 3.0

14 Grade Point Average o Will my senior year grades be used in calculating my college/university GPA?

15 Grade Point Average o Do colleges check my senior grades to make sure I stayed on-track and completed the courses I said I would?

16 Financial Aid All financial aid applications happen senior year Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Qualifies you for money from both the State and Federal Government. Lots of Aid available!! Most students will qualify for some sort of aid. Examples: Cal Grant, Pell Grant, Student Loans, Work Study, Blue and Gold Grant)

17 Cal Cal Grant/Dream grant slide Act o Cal Grant/Dream Act Your GPA is worth $$$ Based on your financial situation and your GPA you could qualify for over $20,000 Cal Grant GPA is based on sophomore and junior year grades 3.0 GPA is the safest bet for getting a Cal Grant/Dream Act

18 COLLEGE EXAMS o SAT o Skills tested in: o English (reading and writing) & Math o Not punished for incorrect answers o ACT Plus Writing o Skills tested in: o English, Reading, Math, Science, (Writing) o Optional writing portion (required by UC) o Not punished for incorrect answers

19 COLLEGE EXAMS When do I take the SAT and/or ACT?? THIS YEAR!!!! Typically it is best to take it SPRING SEMESTER. You can sign up now for any date! Fee waivers available in the counseling office.

20 PSAT What? o WHY??? o Receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. o See how your performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college. See where you stand in your chances to get in. o Enter the National Merit Scholarship Competition (juniors only). o Help prepare for the SAT. You can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions you will see on the SAT so when it is timed to take the real test you will be better prepared.

24 National Collegiate Athletic Association To play college level sports students must: o Complete the required core courses o Take the SAT or ACT o Register online at o See your Learning Director for help!

25 PE Exemption Form PE Exemption Form All Students in PE MUST have a waiver on file (even if you ve earned all your credits). It s the law! This waiver does not waive the graduation requirement; just waives you being enrolled in a PE class. If you have not turned this in, turn it in now! If we DO NOT get your waiver; you WILL be enrolled in a PE class!
