32 Initiatives in School Education One of the leading states in providing best infrastructure and facilities to primary and upper primary schools based on EDI for the year 2009 by NUEPA Strong school education network with 19,608 govt. schools and 1,518 private schools with government schools contributing 92% to school education Education through EDUSAT being provided to students of secondary schools Approx. Rs 780 cr being spent on primary school education under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan 117 Adarsh Schools for providing quality education to rural students Infrastructure in 351 schools being upgraded under NABARD project at Rs. 141 cr. 52 Thrust Areas of Punjab Agro & Agro Processing Industry Agro-based industries contribute nearly 20% to the manufacturing output and about 14% to the employment in the state Strong growth in organic farming with 1,086 farmers registering for organic farming of various crops Supply quality inputs viz. fertilizers, micronutrients, seeds, pesticides, POL etc. to farmers. Providing facilitation services to private entrepreneurs undertaking contract farming in Punjab for crops viz. Barley, Basmati, Maize, Subabul etc. 44 Agro / Food projects have been set up with capital outlay of Rs mn. 2 new agro based projects involving an investment of Rs. 650 mn are under consideration. 53 Thrust Areas of Punjab Agro & Agro Processing Industry A dedicated Agro Industrial policy providing special incentives to the agro industry investors based on the size and projects with minimum fixed capital investment of Rs 250 million under Mega Project Scheme. Punjab Agri Export Corporation is providing 25% to 30% subsidy on waxing/grading, packing and freight for distant marketing & Export of fresh and processed vegetables. Punjab Agro Juices Ltd. (PAJL) operates two plants at Hoshiarpur and Abohar to process citrus, tropical fruits and vegetables. Punjab Agro Juices Limited has todate processed about 34,000 MT of a variety of raw materials like Kinnow, amla, Aloevera, Tomato, Lauki etc for its clients. Slide No 53
54 Thrust Areas of Punjab Mega Food Parks To facilitate establishment of strong food processing industries, Mega Food Parks is being implemented in dist. Ferozepur at a cost of Rs.1,500 million by IMFPL. MFP would provide common infrastructure for primary processing, packaging, QC lab, ETP, road/power/water supply to over 30 food processing units within the park. Perishable Cargo Centre at International Airport Amritsar A temporary Perishable Cargo Centre setup in 2006 to facilitate export of fresh fruits & vegetables and processed foods. This is being upgraded to a permanent ultra modern facility of 150 TPD capacity with an investment of Rs.200 million. Slide No 54

This will boost export of fresh vegetables from Punjab. Fruit and Vegetable Processing Plant Two plants costing Rs.900 million setup to process citrus, tropical fruits and vegetables.
