1 of 10 5/2/2016 1:18 PM Monday Morning May 2, Access to Capital/Annual Job Fair/Tools/City Jobs, etc. Frank, Laurence B. Sent:Monday, May 02, :42 AM Good Monday morning to you on May 2, 2016 NOTE: Today at 1:15pm our next Work Environment Committee (WEC) meeting convenes in Mariposa Hall MA03. We will continue our discussions about our construction project needs to potentially be included in a new construction bond for this Fall. All are welcome. We are about a month out from our graduation. I am hoping that you will come out this year for the Saturday morning, June 4 th, North Quad ceremony. Yes, we will have our youngest and newest City Councilmember, Marqueece Harris Dawson, to provide an inspiring address to our graduates, along with Chancellor Francisco Rodriguez, and Trustee Mike Eng. But the best reason to be there is for the students to see you there, and we will ind a way to highlight that. Please note it in your calendar now, if you will, and I will talk about it again. Also, please encourage students that are graduating to consider applying to be the Student Speaker of the 2016 Graduating Class. Interested students must send an to aso@lattc.edu by Wednesday, May 4 th and prepare a 3 5 minute speech based on this year s commencement theme Pathways to Success. Auditions will take place on Thursday, May 5 th in Redwood Hall, Room C 105. The busy season is upon us. This Tuesday, May 3 rd, from 9am until noon, we will be hosting the Access to Capital event coordinated by the Mayor s of ice and the of ice of our City Council member Curren Price. The event is designed to give entrepreneurs and community business people information on inancing their companies and their ideas. It will include information on the city s contracting guidelines. Joining the event to provide both insight and federal opportunities will be U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew. This is the ifth current or former Cabinet member to visit Trade Tech in the last two years. That is a remarkable run. If any students or community allies have an interest in starting up their own business or inding resources to help with a current business, this would be an excellent event to learn how to build their capital. The event will take place under the South Tent and in AH (TE) 101 starting at 9:00am. It s free, but one must RSVP at

3 of 10 5/2/2016 1:18 PM One of our most enjoyable annual traditions also occurs this Tuesday, May 3 rd. The annual Employee Recognition luncheon will take place in the North Tent starting at 11:00am. This event gives us a chance to honor those among us who have reached milestones of service to Trade Tech and the district. There are always some good stories and a sense of accomplishment for some special people who have made Trade Tech what it is. Please RSVP for the lunch if you have not already done so, and join the festivities. If you want an energy jolt, join us on Wednesday, May 4 th at 11:30 in the North Tent, which is where the Tools for the Trades Rally will take place. This is where we honor our Skills USA competitors as well as announce the winners of our Tools for the Trades scholarships. Our programs gather together and cheer as the names of the students are announced. It is a tradition that goes back to the 1970s and the rally really builds student spirit for their programs and each other. And a shout out to our Foundation for their growing support for this work. On Wednesday evening, the LATTC RISE Club (Respect Immigrant Students Education) will be holding its annual fundraising dinner. The event will raise scholarships for students who have little access to other assistance, due to their status. The Chancellor and others plan to stop by to give them support. Hope you
4 of 10 5/2/2016 1:18 PM can, too. One of our most important events of the year is taking place this Thursday, May 5 th, under the tents. The annual Job/Career and Resource Expo will bring more than 60 employers to campus along with resources that are aimed at our communities. Linda Cole and her team, supported by our WorkSource Center, EDD and others on the lyer below, give our students real opportunities for careers in a range of ields, and it happens right here on campus. Please encourage all students to attend this Thursday between 9am and noon, and to bring their resume as well as dressing appropriately for interviews on the spot. It could be a life changing day.
5 of 10 5/2/2016 1:18 PM On Friday, May 6th, we are hosting the Social Innovation Summit, a remarkable event which seeks to connect working people with the opportunity to start their own businesses. Its genesis is encouraging individual trades people to become subcontractors and ultimately signatory partners in building Los Angeles. That effort has grown into a multi sector entrepreneurial strategy to grow LA s homegrown business capacity. The North Tent will be illed with vendors offering innovation information and opportunity to the attendees. The South Tent is a stage for some of the region s best talent. This is the second time this event has come to Trade Tech and I encourage our staff and students to attend. Don t forget that this Friday, May 6 th, our dancing talents will be on display for a very worthy cause. Dancing with the Foster Care Stars event will take place at Stevens Steakhouse. Make sure you purchase or donate to this worthwhile program directed by Dr. Dione Washington.
6 of 10 5/2/2016 1:18 PM To purchase tickets: To make donations: And on Saturday, May 7th, we are holding a regional Child Development Conference to look at the latest trends for educators in this ield.
7 of 10 5/2/2016 1:18 PM I did a get chance to participate in a couple interesting events last week. This past weekend the LA Urban Agriculture Summit 2016 took place in the South Tent, gathering folks interested in using the urban landscape to grow sustainable food. LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas spoke of his recent motion to create an Urban Agriculture Incentive Zone to provide meaningful property tax reductions to landowners who grow or allow others to plant community gardens on their property. Many other voices were heard. Trade Tech continues to showcase the voices of cutting edge discussions in this city and county. Thank you to Marcela Oliva and her Architecture program who partnered with the Center for Urban Agriculture Los Angeles (CUALA) to bring this work forward. Last Friday morning I got the chance to help the City celebrate Mayor Garcetti s signing of a City Jobs Executive Order requiring all 38 city departments to set aside a portion of their 5,000 upcoming hires for local hire, train to place, pre civil service opportunities. Trade Tech was highlighted as the primary workforce partner in this effort as we provided the orientation, boot camp, and certi ication of the irst 18 city hires from the Bureau of Street Services. The great majority are our Construction Tech graduates including Dora Robles (pictured) who is now working for the City of Los Angeles, soon to have promotion rights throughout the City. The next orientation for students and the community will take place on Friday, May 6 th at 5:00pm in TE 107, followed by a boot camp and the hiring of 15 to become city employees. Please refer interested students to register to attend the orientation. I got a chance to take part in two inspiring campus gatherings last week. There was the Child Development Center Trike a thon and Fun Day, around the North Quad. I want to thank the CDC and Culinary Arts for my birthday poster, song and delicious cake. It totally caught me off guard. Congratulations to Financial Aid for capturing the trike a thon championship and bragging rights for a year. After that I visited Aspen Hall, Room 101, where our Denim Day/Title IX efforts were centered. It was great to see so many of you wearing your jeans to support the cause.
8 of 10 5/2/2016 1:18 PM I must add my congratulations to our LATTC architecture student Stephanie Green who Friday captured irst place at the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) Green Expo She beat out projects submitted by architectural and engineering students from UC campuses, private universities like USC, Otis School of Design and many other colleges. It is truly a signi icant accomplishment. Congratulations to Stephanie, her instructor Marcela Oliva and the entire architecture program. You have made us proud.
9 of 10 5/2/2016 1:18 PM I This is a very busy week ahead with lots of opportunities for our students. Encourage them to take advantage. And feel free to join in.
