2 FORTY NONPROFITS COLLABORATE TO HELP EDUCATION EVOLVE WORLDWIDE PMIEF's Project Learning Network (PLN) is made up of 40 education-based nonprofit organizations focused on impacting youth. This collaborative effort seeks to improve K- 12 education by incorporating project management skills development as an essential component in project-based learning. The PLN recently convened 27 nonprofit global leaders for a meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Normally, sessions are focused on planning and strategizing new ways to integrate project-based learning into the classroom. However, during the previous year, attendees expressed an interest in receiving project management training as a means to increase the capacity of their own organizations. Each nonprofit member of the PLN was invited to bring two people to the New Orleans event for the hands-on experience of working on a project. Each organization also provided a current or future project idea. Four projects were selected, including one on how to ramp up a competition and another that focused on the design of a mentoring program. Participants selected a project and, over three days, the group planned each project by developing a thorough understanding of the essential phases of project management. By practicing project management skills, the leaders improved their understanding of the tools and principles their organizations use with the students and educators served through their programs. Their programs are as varied as the organizations themselves. However, every PLN member organization (click here for a complete list) is a proponent for the development of 21st century skills critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication in youth and their importance to project-based learning. Combined, PLN member-organizations touch the lives of more than 35 million K-12 students around the world. Helen Soule, PhD, represents the Partnership for 21st Century Learning, known as P21 in the Project Learning Network. "Participating in the PLN has been an amazing experience in professional learning. We have the opportunity to network with a diverse range of transformative leaders, forging new relationships and exploring creative solutions. It is the place where the 4 Cs are in action: we collaborate in new ways, we create new ideas and strategies, we think critically to solve collective problems and we communicate at a deeper level," says Helen.

This award is aligned with PMIEF's focus onproject Management for Social Good. It recognizes PMI chapters, individual project managers and corporations/government agencies for their significant achievement in increasing a nonprofit's organizational competency; improving the well-being of a community through the completion of a project; or applying project management principles to the pro bono delivery of nonprofit services. 4 DONOR SPOTLIGHT: Karl Schaeffer, PMP Karl Schaeffer, PMP, believes his PMP certification has been an asset to his career. As a result of the value he has received and the priority he places on the reputation of our profession, the PMI Educational Foundation is one of his annual philanthropic priorities. He made his first gift to PMIEF in And, for the last decade, Karl has made an annual contribution to PMIEF when he renewed his PMI membership. He believes giving back is just one way to help maintain the reputation of project management as a career and PMI as an organization. "If you're a member of PMI, you want to build the organization and maintain its strength. The reputation of our profession is based on the quality of its practitioners. Being a PMP means something to me. That's why I give," he says. Karl began his career in the petroleum industry immediately upon college graduation. Shortly thereafter, employment moved him and his wife, Bernadette, to Alaska where he has spent his career in energy production. His professional training is in mechanical engineering. However, a job loss in the mid-1990s inspired him to look into project management. It took just one project management course for Karl to realize that throughout his career he had been working on projects. That's when he first connected with PMI. As he learned more about the profession, he decided to become certified as a PMP. Karl says his project management experience and PMP certification have taught him to communicate more effectively with clients and other stakeholders on projects. "It gave me a framework to speak to them in terms that they could understand. It also allowed me, as a project leader, to educate them regarding what it is I needed in order to successfully complete the job," he explains. Because of all he has gained as a project manager, giving back to PMIEF every year is important to him. "I strongly believe in charitable donations of time or money to make the world a better place," he says. "I like to give back. I was involved in our [PMI] local chapter for a while, but since I'm not able to donate my time right now, I like to make a cash contribution to PMIEF," he says.
