3 PAGE 3 4-H NEWSLETTER Market Sheep, Goat and Swine Weigh-in and Tagging The following dates have been scheduled to weigh-in and tag market lambs, market goats and market swine for the 2017 Moffat County Fair. Market Lamb and Market Goat Weigh-in and Tagging: May 3, 2017 from 4:00-6:30 PM Market Swine Tagging: May 4, 2017 from 3:30-6:30 PM PLEASE NOTE OFFICIAL WEIGHTS FOR 2017: In accordance with Colorado State Fair, Moffat County Fair Board has adopted the following weight requirements for 2017 Moffat County Fair: Market Steers Market Heifers Market Sheep Market Goat Market Swine Minimum Maximum 1050 lbs lbs. 110 lbs. 55 lbs. 235 lbs. No max No max No max 110 lbs. 290 lbs. Weigh-in will take place at the Moffat County Fairgrounds. In order to show or sell your market animal(s) at the 2017 Moffat County Fair, all 4-H/FFA members taking a market animal project (sheep, swine and goats) will be required to have their animal(s) tagged and weighed at these scheduled dates. 4-H/FFA members are allowed to weigh-in and tag up to three market animals per specie at the initial weigh-in. At the Moffat County Fair weigh-in in August, 4-H/FFA members will be allowed to weigh-in up to three market animals per specie but keep only two market animals per specie on the fairgrounds to show (the third animal is not allowed to stay on the fairgrounds). Families can designate a family animal at this initial weigh-in. It is your responsibility to let the weigh-in crew know if you would like to designate a family animal. Designated family animals will be tagged with a different colored tag at the initial weigh-in. At county fair weigh in, if the family animal is being shown, it must be declared to a specific family member. State Fair Nominations for Livestock: At the initial weigh-in and tagging days, May 3rd for lambs and goats, you may bring in up to three animals that you want to nominate and retinal scanned for State Fair, There is a $5.00 charge for every animal nominated. If you have more than three lambs and goats to be nominated for State Fair, we will be retinal scanning these animals on May 22nd from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Fairgrounds scale house. We will not be able to make special arrangements for these nominations. This will be the only date to have this done! Swine members must fill out nomination cards with member and animal information along with ear notch s and bring the nomination cards to the Extension Office along with a picture of each side of the pig and a front view with ear notches evident in the picture by May 23rd 2017.

4 PAGE 4 4-H NEWSLETTER The Extension Office encourages all first year members and members that are taking a new species to partake in this event! EXPO is a great way to learn more about your animal projects and meet new 4-H members. The Extension Office is looking for interested individuals that would be willing to be volunteer 4-H Project Leader. The areas that leaders are needed in are: Rabbit, Sheep, Swine, Goat, Horse, Vet Science, Cake Decorating, Photography, Model Rocketry, Small Engines, Robotics, Entomology, Ceramics, Woodworking, and Visual Arts. If you have an expertise in these areas and you are interested in investing in the youth of Moffat County, the Moffat County 4-H Program, and becoming a volunteer 4-H leader, please contact the Extension Office. Each volunteer leader is required to go through an application process that requires a back ground check and a reference check. Please contact the Extension Office if you are interested or have questions.

5 PAGE 5 4-H NEWSLETTER MQA CLASSES 4-H members enrolled in market and/or breeding livestock projects who are ages 8 or 14, or a first year 4-H member, must attend a Meat Quality Assurance (MQA) program. Mark Your Calendar! April 6th, 6:00 PM at the Extension Office May 18th, 6:00 PM at the Extension Office Call the Extension Office to reserve your spot! Animal Care and Housing Form All 4-H members with livestock and horse projects will be required to have a completed, signed, and approved Animal Care and Housing Form for Colorado 4-H Livestock Projects on file at their county Extension Office at time of enrollment. It is highly recommended that Colorado 4-H Livestock project animals (beef and dairy cattle, sheep, swine, goat, poultry, llama and horse) have a premises registration with the National Animal Identification System. This form is required and must be filled out completely and be approved in order to participate in an animal project in Moffat County and to be a 4-H member in good standing. If level 1 riding portion is not passed, then members may compete in showmanship and halter classes. Showmanship is required to complete project for all horse members. Please schedule a time and date, through the Extension Office, to complete the written test. The written test must be completed before you take the riding test. The riding portion for Levels Testing (Levels 1 and up) will take place at the Fairgrounds on the following dates: June 29th 9:00am to 12:00 pm Please let the Extension Office know if you will be attending and what level you will be taking.

7 PAGE 7 4-H NEWSLETTER Homer Wilson Memorial Livestock Leadership Award The Moffat County 4-H Foundation is honored to announce the Homer F. Wilson Livestock Leadership Awards. Homer was a dedicated member of the Moffat County 4-H Foundation and served as the Auctioneer of the Junior Livestock Sale for over 40 years. The Wilson Family and the 4-H Foundation would like to honor Homer s memory by presenting three Outstanding Livestock members in the 4-H/FFA program each year with a cash award of $500 each and jacket to recognize 4-H/FFA members who have excelled in their projects as well as provided service to their community. The award will be given in three age divisions: Elementary School, Middle School and High School. One award will be given in each age division. The awards will be presented prior to the Junior Livestock Sale each year by Shane and Shelley Wilson and the 4-H Foundation. CRITERIA: Beginning each year in January, 4-H Leaders or Vo-Ag Advisors may nominate as many members in each age division as they feel meet the requirements. Members may be nominated each year even if they were a previous year s winner or nominee. Leaders/Advisors MUST complete a Leader/Advisor Nomination form on each member they are nominating. Forms will be available at the Moffat County Extension office. Leader/Advisor Nomination forms must be submitted to the Moffat County Extension office or ed to dryforkranch@yahoo.com no later than May 15 th each year. Late nominations will not be accepted. Leaders who would like to receive the nomination form by my send a request to the above address. 4-H/FFA members who have been nominated by a Leader/Advisor will receive notification of their nomination along with an application packet. 4-H/FFA members must complete the application packet and return to the Extension office no later than June 12 th by 4:00 pm. No late applications will be accepted. The Selection Committee will review all applications and will select the top individuals in each age group to meet with the selection committee, approximately July 1 st of each year. The three outstanding members will be selected from the application and interview/presentation. These individuals will attend the council meetings and report back to their community clubs as well as be an active member of the Moffat County 4-H Council. New Year New Record Books Make sure to drop by the Extension Office to pick up your Record Books and Manuals

11 4-H NEWSLETTER As we kick off the new 4-H year some of us are going to start thinking about Community Service Projects, Fundraisers, and Outdoor Activities. Please remember to let the Extension Office know about your events and to fill out your Event Program Sheets! Scholarship deadlines are fast approaching so stop by the office to pick up an application for several scholarships available. Moffat County 4-H Foundation and Franklin L. Pud Stetson Memorial Scholarships. Moffat County 4-H members who are seniors in high school and intend to further their education may apply for the Moffat County 4-H Foundation and Franklin Pud Stetson Memorial Scholarships. Scholarships will be awarded to Moffat County 4-H members. Priority will be given to high school seniors and then to college students. Scholarship applications will be available at the Extension Office and will be due March 13th There are also several state 4-H scholarships available, go to: The Foundation has purchased the Stars Online scholarship management program to handle the application, evaluation and awards process. 4-H members can now start an application, save it, and reopen as many times as they want before submitting it. Recommendation letters can be submitted electronically through the website. Each member is required to have three letters of recommendation submitted. Grade transcripts can now be uploaded to the website. Transcripts are required from each applicant. This application process is completely electronic, nothing needs to be mailed. Market Swine Participants! Again this year there will be a mandatory Swine Tag in For the Moffat County Fair. We will not be weighing pigs due to Biosecurity and to ensure the health of your pigs. Swine Tag- in is May 4th 2017 Dog Participants Animal ID Sheets Please drop by the Extension Office and visit with the staff about your Dog ID Sheets. ID sheets are due April 13th 2017!! All dog participants are required to turn in a Dog ID! Horse I.D. Sheets All 4-H members who are enrolled in the 4-H horse project are required to fill out an I.D. sheet and return it to the Extension Office by April 13, I.D. sheets are available at the Extension Office. Horses that were used during 2016 as a project animal can have the same picture on the 2017 sheet.
