2 Welcome to the school year at Greenway Elementary! We are looking forward to an exciting year! This Volunteer Handout is a resource to help you determine how you would like to become active in your child s education. Before volunteering - ALL volunteers must complete a background check. This policy is required by the Beaverton School District. It is easy to do and only takes a couple of minutes. Simply go to: This can be done on any computer, even the PTO computer in the school office. When you volunteer you MUST log into the PTO computer located in the school s office. Once you are cleared to volunteer, an identification badge will be made for you. All volunteers MUST wear their identification badge while in the building at ALL TIMES. For safety, the office needs to know at all times who is in the building and where they are. Also, volunteer hours are reported to the district and this information is used by the district when allocating grant money. We also draw a Volunteer of the Month from these hours anyone volunteering is eligible! If you are a Nike, Intel or Mentor Graphics employee, the school receives matching funds for the time you volunteer. Please be sure to note this on your volunteer interest form. As parents of students at Greenway Elementary you are automatically a member of the PTO. It is FREE and the PTO decides how to spend the money raised from our different fundraisers, which fun events to offer our families, and how to make our school better for our kids. Most of these decisions are made by majority vote of those in attendance at the PTO meetings. We would love to hear your ideas and opinions!

Sponsored Events and Activities Here is a list of just a few of the programs, services and equipment the P.T.O. has been able to provide Greenway students, teachers and families over the past few years: Community Building Events- Back to School Night, Bingo Night, and Spring Social Art Literacy- Students learn about six different artists and types of art each year! Classroom Parties- The kids enjoy special holiday fun for Halloween, Winter, and Valentine s Day! Staff Appreciation Week- A week of gifts and goodies for our dedicated Greenway Staff! Climbing Wall in the Gym, Copier for the K-1 st wing, and other school wide needs We look forward to hearing your ideas! P.T.O Meetings are Held Every Second Tuesday of the Month, times will vary. All Are Welcome!! FREE childcare provided for the meetings. Meetings are a great opportunity to meet other parents and hear from the community. Each meeting has a different theme, and will include a fun family activity at the end. Past meetings have included author visits, Beaverton School Board members, artists, the Beaverton library, and family dancing! Come see what we will bring this year!

4 Volunteer Opportunities As do all elementary schools, Greenway thrives when parents and staff work together to bring the very best we are able to our children. We know your time is valuable! As such, the following volunteer opportunities are organized by the amount of time it takes to complete them. We strongly encourage you to volunteer in your own child s classroom. It is a source of great pride and joy for both you and your child! If that is not possible, we recommend signing up for multiple one-time events or the ongoing opportunities. A lot of volunteer opportunities can be worked around your schedule, they are known about far in advance and most of all they are a lot of fun! (One-time events do not list a time because they are dependent on how much time you are able to volunteer for the event.) In the Classroom Job Description Time Classroom Volunteers Room Representative Art Literacy Classroom Parties Help teachers with projects including preparing materials, copying, cutting, helping out with students in the classroom reading with students, and other various tasks. Teachers also have projects that can be done at home. Room representatives are a valuable link between the teachers, the classroom volunteers, and the Volunteer Coordinators. Some of the responsibilities can include working up the volunteer schedule for your teacher s classroom, organizing volunteers for classroom parties, and coordinating volunteers from your classroom to other school events. These events can include chaperoning class field trips off-campus. Activities mostly over and at home on your own time. Art Literacy is an art education program that highlights six artists each year. Volunteers will learn about each artist in a training session, and then present the artist to the class with slides and a hands-on art project. Time is arranged between you and the teacher to fit both schedules. The PTO organizes holiday classroom parties for the school. This usually includes a snack/treat and a game or activity. Games and treats are handed out to the teachers the morning of the party. Parties include Halloween, Winter, and Valentine s. If funds/volunteers available, more may be added. 5 On-Going Activities Job Description Time Box Tops Bulletin Boards / Calendar Clothes Closet / Lost & Found Fifth Grade Recognition Hospitality / Appreciation Library Scrip Box Tops, Campbell s Labels, and Coke Rewards are collected throughout the school year and turned in for money. Volunteers collect the box tops, count them, and enter coke rewards online. Most of the work can be done at home. Parent volunteers keep up the bulletin boards in the main hallway ly, with calendars, upcoming events, etc. Your time is flexible with this project; can be done in the evenings. The Clothes Closet is a Beaverton School District program located at the district offices, SW Merlo Road. It distributes free clothes to district students in need. At school volunteers are needed to organize and keep the lost and found clean. Clothes Closet - volunteers are needed for ONE 2-hour shift on our designated day in April. A parent group helps coordinate and plan the special events for the fifth grade classes at the end of the school year. Past events have included a special off campus outing, an assembly & reception, and a fifth grade-vs-staff kickball game. Volunteers are needed to help with various events throughout the year, such as the potluck dinner for teachers during evening conferences, assist during Staff Appreciation Week, and sending Thank You cards. Computer assistants, shelving books, checking materials in and out, and labeling new books are some of the duties done by volunteers in the library. Your time is flexible, and training will be provided. This is a program where you can purchase gift cards from selected businesses, restaurants, grocery stores, and entertainment. Greenway receives a percentage of your purchases. Scrip is sold and distributed by school volunteers, so volunteers are needed to assist in collecting, placing, and picking up and distributing orders. Training will be provided. Varies Any Any Student Store Tardy Slips During previous years our Student Store has been open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, immediately after school. We sell various school supplies and snacks. We need adult volunteers to supervise the student workers, buy supplies and handle the money. Chairperson is responsible for setting volunteer schedules and handling the money. This person is responsible for handing out tardy slips to those students who may have gotten a little bit of a slow start in the morning. The time commitment is from 8:30am -9:15am year round on the specific day(s) you are scheduled to volunteer based on your availability. Varies Varies

6 One-Time Events Event Bingo Night Book Fair Fanno Creek Fun Walk/Run Field Day Health Screening Picture Day Spring for the Arts Spring Social/Carnival Staff Appreciation Description This is a free night of bingo, with great prizes! It is a great evening of family fun. Volunteers are needed to monitor the drink and snack table, the prize table, help with set-up, hand out bingo cards, authenticate winners, and help clean up. Greenway s annual book fair is held during the week of conferences. Volunteers are needed to work as cashiers, set up/take down and assist students with book selections. The money earned from these events goes toward the purchase of new library books for Greenway. A FREE community-building mile and a half walk through Greenway Park and a raffle at the end. Volunteers are needed to direct the flow of participants along the route, assist in handing out rewards and refreshments at the end. Field Day is a day filled with field games galore and the format is carnival-style. Usually Field Day is two sessions - a 2 1/2-hr AM session for grades 3-5 & AM Kindies and a 2-hr PM session for grades 1-2 & PM Kindies. Volunteers are needed to help run field games (usually one volunteer per game). Volunteers are needed to assist during Health Screening Day and Hearing Screening Day. The screening includes vision screening for selected grades. Hearing Screening Day for grades KG, 1st and 3rd grade includes assisting the audiologist with students (crowd control). Training will be provided. Volunteers are needed to escort classes to where the pictures will be taken, to help students prepare for their picture, and to assist the photography staff. This event needs volunteers to help organize the school-wide run by helping with set-up, cleanup, marking laps, and handing out refreshments afterwards. This is an event the students look forward to. The money the students earn through sponsors helps fund the Arts program at Greenway. This community-building event is our biggest event of the year! It includes food, raffles, crafts, games, silent auction with classroom made projects, and other activities. We need MANY volunteers for a huge variety of jobs. These jobs include: classroom projects, games, food, prizes and raffle. We need several chairpersons for this event to make it run smoothly. Each year a week is identified to formally appreciate school staff across the nation. During this week we do various things for our Greenway staff such as, coffee, a potluck lunch, etc. Volunteers are needed to help with the planning and organizing of the week.
