4 LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Emerging Leaders Are you an emerging professional ready to lead the way in your community? Do you want to make a difference, but you re not quite sure where to start? Emerging Leaders will help you take the first step. Through the yearlong program, you will: Discover your leadership strengths and identify your individual assets through a transformative leadership assessment Receive resources to lead more effectively in all areas of your life Be matched with your best volunteer fit Develop skills for serving on a nonprofit board Network and share ideas with other motivated leaders Discover your purpose and how to act on it for yourself, for others and for your community. 6 Volunteer Manager Leaders Do you manage volunteers through your business, your school, or your organization? Would you like to build a more successful volunteer program? 7 Transformative Leadership Day A component of all leadership programming teams is an assessment by David Collins of I-9 Intelligences. It is offered as a part of the program cost. Participants will receive: A transformative experience focused on the development of each person in the key areas of their life and work Clarity and renewed commitment for each participant s current situation, role and leadership opportunity Improved skills to optimize participant s personal leadership style with their business or organization s mission, strategy and culture Date: March 9 Time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Location: Helen DeVitt Jones Studio Gallery, LHUCA ABOUT DAVID COLLINS David Collins enjoys helping people discover a sense of mission and passion in their lives and work. After climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in 1984, his sense of personal mission emerged helping people lead more meaningful lives and be of more service to others. He developed a nonprofit job referral network based at Harvard s Kennedy School, researched all aspects of organizational culture under the direction of MIT/Rutgers professors and Council on Economic Priorities, and served as a Senior Evaluator at Caliper Human Strategies. He founded and ran Obik for 10 years a premier career intelligence company whose clients included the National Association of Independent Schools, PBS, a career partner to Blackboard and US News & World Report, Peterson s Guides, Chase Manhattan s Mentor Matching Initiative, and the Arthur Foundation. His personal assessment tool offers insights into personality attributes, intelligences, and motivators and how these converge to indicate certain roles and personal development strategies that enable one to enjoy, be good at, and really fit into their work.

9 Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Changing behavior is hard, as evidenced by anyone who s ever tried to start an exercise program or train a teenager. Switch shows that successful changes follow a pattern, a pattern you can use to make the changes that matter to you, whether your interest is in changing the world or changing your waistline. Based on her brother s #1 New York Times bestseller Switch, this session will present a framework for changing how people act, even in the toughest circumstances. Decisive: How to Make Better Choices in Life and Work 1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Decisive offers fresh strategies and practical tools enabling us to make better choices. Because the right decision, at the right moment, can make all the difference. Along the way, we will learn the answers to critical questions like these: How can we stop the cycle of agonizing over our decisions? How can we make group decisions without destructive politics? And how can we ensure that we don t overlook precious opportunities to change our course? Based on her brother s bestselling book Decisive, Susan Heath Hays will take us through the tools to becoming better and BOLDER decision makers.

10 PROJECT MANAGEMENT Project Management 101 Whether you have project manager in your title or not, we all manage projects every day. Organizing a fundraising event, creating and publishing a newsletter, writing a grant these are just a few examples of the projects you may juggle. Wouldn t you like to be able to do so more efficiently and effectively? If you would, this workshop is for you! Join us as we learn project management basics from a representative of the West Texas Project Management Institute Chapter. The West Texas Chapter of PMI promotes a more established and local support network for the many project management professionals in the area. 11 Project Management: Grant Writing This innovative workshop is the perfect opportunity to learn about project management and writing grants in an applied way. This workshop will pull from the principles taught in Practical Project Management 101 and will demonstrate how to use the concepts while writing a grant. With many large grant deadlines in April, this workshop is positioned perfectly to allow you the opportunity to gain valuable skills to be more successful when the time comes to submit your proposals to funders. In one workshop you can receive the combined expert insights of Sharon Bass, Executive Director of the Volunteer Center and of David Crews, former President of the West Texas Chapter of the Project Management Institute. 12 MARKETING Basic Social Media Do you know your organization should be using social media, but aren t sure where to get started? This workshop is for you! It will cover the basics of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube. Learn about how these platforms can benefit your organization in the best and most effective way. Discover tools for effective management of all of your social media accounts efficiently. This workshop will be a great starting point for Advanced Social Media Once you have a grasp of what each social media platform does and how to use them, this workshop will go beyond the basics and will teach you how to truly involve your audience, expand your reach, and create appealing content on the appropriate platform. In this workshop, Allison Matherly, the Coordinator of Digital Engagement for Texas Tech, will share her expertise to help you learn best practices, platforms, and techniques for more engaging social media. 13 Photography For any organization, the ability to share the impact they are making is essential. And as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. Come to this great workshop to learn valuable information about how to get started taking incredible pictures. Learn from professional photographer, Kristin Bednarz, how to take pictures that tell your story. While using a camera is great, she will also share valuable tips on how to take great pictures on a smart phone. 14 EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION Communication Skills We all have a message we are trying to communicate. Today, the average person absorbs more than 20,000 words of information daily. How can you make your message stand out from the rest? In this workshop, you will learn techniques you can put to use right away to improve your communication skills. You will learn how to select and organize information to aid in the understanding of your message. You ll learn how to analyze your audience and target your material to their interests. Also, you will pick up some tips on how to better handle situations and communicate your message when stakes and emotions are running high. 15 Improving Your Presentation Skills Whether or not doing formal presentations is a part of your job description, we all present something every day. Anyone who wants to do a better job of sharing what they know can benefit from Improving Your Presentation Skills. In this workshop, you will learn skills that will help you be a better presenter to both large and small audiences. This workshop will be presented by Rex Castle, Director of Interactive Content at Tyler Technologies. Rex also has written a book on presenting, titled Why not WOW? and has a wide range of presentation experiences. These trainings can be done for individuals or groups for a nominal fee and conducted on-site at your organization, or at the Volunteer Center. 21 SPECIAL TRAININGS Board Governance The Volunteer Center offers specialized trainings for your organization. Training could include board orientation for new and existing board members, roles of nonprofit board members vs. staff, financial resources, strategic planning, organization alignment, fundraising or other trainings as requested. Staff Development Training to build a strong team - from team-building to leadership development, understanding roles, and working on a team. Volunteer Matching The Volunteer Center offers a special assessment that helps individuals find their ideal volunteer fit, and provides training to assist in understanding the results.
