6 Workshop & Activity Descriptions Adjusting to American Culture Adjusting to a new culture is both an exciting and difficult challenge. This session will discuss the various stages of cultural adjustment as well as how to feel at home at Notre Dame and match your expectations with reality. Campus Tour Are you interested in learning more about Notre Dame s campus? If so, join the walking tour to see the many beautiful buildings on campus and learn about Notre Dame s vibrant history. Catholicism 101 What is Eucharistic Procession, Mass, and the Holy Trinity? What Catholic traditions does Notre Dame uphold? Find out what Catholicism teaches and what that means for students at Notre Dame. This session will also highlight interfaith programs on campus. English Language Support on Campus Looking for support to improve your English? This session will provide information on two resources for international students: the English for Academic Purposes Program (EAP) at the Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures (CSLC), and the University Writing Program, which includes the Writing Center and the Writing and Rhetoric Tutorial for first-year undergraduate students. These programs offer a variety of language support and enrichment resources to help international students succeed. Financial Management for International Students This session will provide a brief overview of the basic elements of managing your money. Topics will include: budgeting, paying bills, signing legal documents, paying U.S. income taxes, and obtaining further information on financial topics. Getting to Know the Career Center Although you ve just arrived at Notre Dame, it s never too early to start thinking about your future career. This session will highlight the resources available at the Career Center to help you find the perfect internship or job after graduation. Global Nomads Workshop Global Nomads, also known as Third Culture Kids, are students who have spent a significant part of their lives outside of their parents home cultures or passport countries. This session will review the unique experiences and 6
7 challenges global nomads might encounter during their college years, present the resources that Notre Dame and ISSA can offer students during this adjustment period, and provide an opportunity to meet other global nomads on campus. Graduate Student Essentials Notre Dame is known for its unique campus culture, community service activities, athletics, and spiritual life. This session, led by current graduate students, will provide tips to help you adjust to life on campus. The presenters will also review other essential topics such as working with your advisor, serving as a TA, getting involved on campus, and more. Graduate Student Social Activity Meet representatives from the Graduate Student Union (GSU) as well as your fellow graduate students in the Fischer O Hara-Grace Community Room. All graduate students are welcome. Refreshments will be served. Having Fun on Campus and in South Bend Are you interested in getting involved on campus and in the community? Come to this session to learn about fall on-campus events, student clubs, community service opportunities, and South Bend. Health Care Services in the U.S. and at Notre Dame (Mandatory) Staff from University Health Services (UHS), Aetna Insurance Company, and the University Counseling Center (UCC) will present the basics of health care in the United States and on campus. This presentation will include information on what is and isn t covered in your insurance plan and the services UHS and the Counseling Center offer. There will also be time to ask questions. This session is mandatory for all graduate and undergraduate students. Health Insurance for Students with Spouses and Families This presentation will provide information about how Notre Dame s health insurance plan works for spouses and families. Immigration Question & Answer Session This session will provide students with the opportunity to ask an Immigration Services Office (ISO) staff member any remaining immigration questions. Maintaining Your F-1 Immigration Status (Mandatory) This session will review and explain everything you need to know about maintaining your F-1 immigration status while attending Notre Dame. This session is mandatory for all Notre Dame-sponsored F-1 student visa holders. 7
8 Maintaining Your J-1 Immigration Status (Mandatory) This session will review and explain everything you need to know about maintaining your J-1 immigration status while attending Notre Dame. This session is mandatory for all Notre Dame-sponsored J-1 student visa holders. Obtaining a Social Security Number (SSN) and Indiana Driver s License This workshop will present the steps you must take to obtain an Indiana driver s license and Social Security number (SSN). Partying in the U.S.A. The party culture in the United States is very different from the party culture in many other parts of the world. This workshop will discuss drinking responsibly and the U.S. laws related to underage drinking. Residence Hall Survival Guide Living with a roommate in a residence hall can be a wonderful experience; it can also be very challenging. This workshop will address the ups and downs of living in a residence hall or on-campus apartment and provide tips to help you make the most out of your experience. Safety on Campus and in the Community (Mandatory) Come learn about the Notre Dame Security Police Department, how to stay safe on campus and in the community, and important U.S. laws to be aware of. This session is mandatory for all graduate and undergraduate students. Serving as a Teaching Assistant - An International Perspective Teaching at the college-level for the first time can be a challenge, but the Kaneb Center for Teaching and Learning is here to help. The Kaneb Center invites all international teaching assistants (TAs) to a panel discussion featuring faculty members and experienced international TAs. Graduate students will leave this session with helpful strategies for encountering different learning cultures in the classroom and addressing language challenges. This session is for graduate students who will serve as TAs for the upcoming academic year. Succeeding in the American Classroom (Mandatory) This session will provide important information about American classroom expectations, how to successfully participate in classroom activities and discussions, as well as how to work effectively with professors, advisors, and peers. In addition, attendees will review Notre Dame s Academic Code of Honor and the consequences for not abiding by this code. This session is mandatory for all graduate and undergraduate students. 8
9 Shopping Shuttle Do you need to purchase items for your residence hall room or apartment? If so, sign up to go on ISSA s Shopping Shuttle to two popular local stores - Walmart and Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Trip to ID Office International Ambassadors will take students to the Notre Dame ID Office to obtain their Student Identification (ID) Cards. Students will need their Student ID cards to access many buildings on campus as well as to purchase food after Orientation. To obtain a card, you will need to bring your Notre Dame ID number and an official photo ID. Undergraduate Student Essentials Notre Dame is known for its unique undergraduate campus culture, extraordinary student involvement in the dorms, community service activities, athletics, and spiritual life. This session, led by current undergraduate students, will provide tips to adjust to life in the residence halls and on campus. The presenters will also review other essential topics such as working with your First Year of Studies advisor, choosing a major, finding a job on campus, and much more! 9
