2 LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF DD/DEEPWOOD FALL 2018 BROCHURE WEEKEND AND EVENING ACTIVITIES ANNOUNCEMENTS RECREATION PROGRAMMING SPECIAL OLYMPIC SPORTS SPECIAL OLYMPIC TRAINING CENTER Leisure activities provided by the Recreation Department are offered to all persons served through the Lake County Board of DD/Deepwood without regard to age or disability. Special Olympic Sports are open to all persons age 8 and older. Final team selection will be the coaches decision.

4 MEDICATION MEMORANDUM TO: RE: Recreation Participants, Parents, Guardians, and Staff Medications on Field Trips This memo is to clarify how medications will be handled while on recreation activities. The following is the procedure for the administration of medications: A. Only licensed medical personnel are given the authority to administer medication during recreation activities unless the participant can administer his/her own medication independently. B. The medication may be kept by the participant or with the recreation staff assigned to the activity. C. If the participant, while on a recreation activity, will be selfadministering medication, written notification must be given to Recreation Service staff prior to that activity regarding: 1. Name of Medication 2. Date and time medication is to be administered 3. Dosage and quantity of medication to be administered Please note that Recreation Services staff must have written notification of individuals taking meds at least 24 hours prior to the activity. This policy will be strictly adhered to. Participants cannot attend activities without prior notification. Recreation will also need to know who will hold the meds, as well as, any reminders or assistance these people might need in administering their own meds. Select your 2 nd choice, and write 2 next to it. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT CHOICE SHEET ACTIVITIES ARE 1 ST & 2 ND CHOICE ONLY. YOU MOST LIKELY WILL GET ONE OF THESE CHOICES. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE NOT CONFIRMED TO ATTEND UNLESS YOU RECEIVE NOTIFICATION FROM A RECREATION STAFF. We have many people respond to the brochure activities, and we try to accommodate everyone. 1. You will receive a CONFIRMATION MEMO prior to your activity. This memo will have all of the final information you will need for your outing which may be different from the brochure. 2. The Recreation Expense Fund will not cover food costs for activities. 3. The Recreation Department does not dispense any medications. If you will be taking any medications, please notify the Recreation Department. 4. NOTE: All activities that arrive back late night (dark) will have pick-up at VGC parking lot for security/lighting purposes. 18 SPECIAL OLYMPICS Winter Sports Registration Form All athletes must have a current Special Olympic Medical Form on file in the Recreation Department. 19 Special Olympics Basketball This is a highly competitive experience. Those individuals trying out must have the necessary fundamental basketball skills in order to participate. Final team selection will be based upon the coaching staff s decision. Athletes must attend practice regularly. Depending on the number of people trying out; we may have another skills team. PRACTICE LOCATION: PRACTICE DAY/ Broadmoor School Saturdays 9:00 11:30 a.m. & Thursdays 5:30 7:00 p.m. TRYOUTS: Thursday, November 1 & Saturday, November 3, 2018 Both dates are tryouts. You must attend both dates. TRANSPORTATION: On your own. Athletes must be picked up at Broadmoor by 11:30 a.m. COMPETITION: Area Basketball Tournament TBA February 2019 State Basketball Tournament TBA End of March 2019 GAMES: Games will be played home and away. Home games will be played at Broadmoor School. Training for this sport is physically demanding. Athletes must be at least 8 years old and have a current Medical Release Form on file in the Recreation Department. Athletes must dress appropriately for the weather and must practice and attend practice on a consistent basis. 21 SPECIAL OLYMPICS DOWNHILL (ALPINE) SKIING Practice for downhill skiing will be held snow/no snow. Once we have snow, we will be training at Brandywine Ski Resort, under the direction of a professional ski instructor. Athletes must have a current medical form on file in the Recreation Department. PRACTICE LOCATION: Recreation Site when we have NO SNOW Boston Mills Ski Resort when we HAVE SNOW PRACTICE SCHEDULE: Thursday nights starting in January 2019 COMPETITION: State Winter Games February 2019 NOTICE: It is mandatory that every athlete attend practice in order to meet deadlines set by the Area and State Departments of Ohio Special Olympics. Any athlete that misses more than 10% of practices will be verbally warned. If the athlete continues to miss practices, a written notice will be issued stating that the athlete is no longer eligible to compete on the Special Olympics Sport Team for the remainder of the season.
