2 Education Service Center, Region 20 has an exciting list of course offerings for the school year for School Nurses, Health, and PE Teachers. These workshops include updates on current health topics to include opportunities to share best practices, network, and connect with community resources for student wellness. Make sure to mark your calendar and plan on attending these great training opportunities. Back to School Nurse Workshop August 7, 2019 Fee: $50, $10 Nurse Cooperative Time: 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Workshop #: This conference includes presentations on a variety of current topics in school health services. It is recommended for all nurses and health assistants working in the school setting. The workshop provides an overview of school health services including the roles and responsibilities of school nurses. School Clinic Substitute Training September 6, 2018 Time: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 pm Workshop #: January 30, 2019 Time: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 pm Workshop #: Fee: $50; $0 Nurse Cooperative This session is designed to prepare individuals to substitute for the school nurse in the school clinic setting. During the course participants will learn diabetes care, severe allergic reaction care, medication administration, and medical documentation techniques. Highly recommended that individuals enrolled in this course also take the Heartsaver CPR, AED, First Aid session to fully prepare them for this role. Mental Health Issues & Impact on School Safety September 12, 2018 Time: 1:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. Workshop #: Fee: $50; $25 Nurse Cooperative Participants will understand the term mental illness. Recognize the factors affecting mental health treatment. Describe the prominent categories of mental illness. Identify suicidal behaviors and risk factors. Describe Texas Law for emergency commitments. Be able to describe and use non-verbal, verbal and movement techniques necessary for approaching and communicating with students in behavioral distress coordinated school health workshops

3 Parenting and Paternity Awareness (p.a.p.a.) Training September 18, 2018 Time: 8:30 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Workshop #: This workshop will provide training from the Texas Office of the Attorney General on the p.a.p.a. curriculum that is part of the high school health class. The learning objectives of p.a.p.a. include: responsible parenting, a basic understanding of paternity and child support laws, skills for healthy relationships, financial implications of becoming a parent, impact of father involvement, benefits of stable family relationships on children, and relationship violence prevention. Child Abuse and Neglect: Understanding the Whole Picture September 19, 2018 Time: 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. Workshop #: The Child Abuse and Neglect Symposium will train school staff to better assist children and families in our community who are involved in the Child Protective Services System by having a better understanding of how the system operates and what resources are available to them at the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. It will enhance their knowledge of ways to identify abuse and neglect to ensure that Texas Children are safe and protected. Internet Safety/Cyberbullying/Human Trafficking and Risk Reduction September 25, 2018 Time: 8:00 a.m. 11:30 a.m. Workshop #: Fee: Nurse Cooperative $0; Non Cooperative $35 The presenter will cover the use of technology and the latest trends that identify how victims, especially students are being exploited. Topics will include sexting, cyberbullying, internet predators and human trafficking as it applies to our youth. The presenter will demonstrate how vulnerable students can be and how education can protect them from becoming victims. Mental Health Issues and Brain Development: What School Health Professionals Need to Know October 2, 2018 Fee: $35.00, $0 Nurse Cooperative Time: 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Workshop #: This workshop will provide an overview of school-aged children mental health issues. Participants will gain an understanding of brain development and how this impacts a child s behavior and learning. During this session school health professionals with learn strategies to utilize when working with students to help them succeed. Medication Administration and Documentation in the School Setting October 10, 2018 Time: 8:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m. Workshop#: Fee: $35; $0 Nurse Cooperative Description: This workshop is designed to train clinic substitutes on how to appropriately administer and document medication in the school setting. The workshop will prepare the clinic substitute to administer medications in all forms to include: pills, liquids, creams, eye and ear drops, as well as inhaled medications. The session will include practice documenting medication administration on common scenarios in the clinic. Child Sexual Abuse: The other three R s, recognizing, responding and reporting October 15, 2018 Time: 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Workshop #: Fee: $45 Nurse Cooperative/$75 Non-Cooperative Every school has children who either have been sexually abused or are currently being sexually abused. In this workshop you will learn the physical and behavioral indicators of a sexual abuse victim. In addition, the course will cover: Reasons why children do and don t tell about being sexually abused; the Stages of Molestation, the outcry witness rule; how to respond to an outcry, guidance on interviewing children at school, laws pertaining to reporting child abuse; Teen pregnancy laws; information about children who molest other children and what to do in a school setting; and behavioral indicators of Pedophiles working/volunteering in the school. The session will be led by Barbara Marek, Executive Director for the Sexual Abuse Awareness Training Program coordinated school health workshops 3

4 Updates on Sexual Health October 17, 2018 Time: 9 a.m. -11:30 a.m. Workshop #: Fee: $35, $0 for Nurse Cooperative The number of young people ages who are infected with HIV is increasing in Bexar County, even though rates are decreasing nationally. Help reverse the trend. Learn up-to-date answers to questions about HIV, STDs and consent and testing in adolescents. Section 504: Bullying & Harassment of Students with Disabilities October 23, 2018 Time: 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Workshop #: January 9, 2019 Time: 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Workshop #: Fee: $100/$75 for Nurse Cooperative Both state and federal laws address bullying and harassment of individuals with disabilities. In addition, disability harassment is a form of discrimination under Section 504 and the ADA. In this session we will cover the distinction between bullying and harassment, as well as a district s responsibility to stop disability harassment and implement preventive measures to ensure that each student receives FAPE. Human Trafficking and Teen Dating Violence November 6, 2018 Time: 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Workshop #: Fee: $100 / $0 Nurse Cooperative The purpose of this training is to provide participants an increased awareness of the issues of human trafficking through the exposure of informational materials and research to include: victim identification, investigation techniques, rescue and prosecution considerations, referral and service provider availability. In addition, information on TEC that mandates each school district adopt and implement a teen dating policy will be included. Participants will receive information regarding the definition of dating violence, safety planning, enforcing protective orders, and training for school personnel. Awareness education for parents and students will also be shared. Implementing Your Wellness Plan November 8, 2018 Time: 8:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m. Workshop #: Every entity that participates in the School Nutrition Program is required to establish a Local School Wellness Policy. Per the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, Local Wellness Policies (LWPs) must include goals within specific areas and plans for their implementation and monitoring. This class will focus on smart goal writing and current requirements. Youth Mental Health First Aid Certification November Time: 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Workshop #: February 20, 2019 Time: 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Workshop #: April 30, 2019 Time: 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Workshop #: July 1, 2019 Time: 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Workshop #: August 1, 2019 Time: 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Workshop #: Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) recognizes the need for schools to support the whole child and acknowledges the importance of student health and wellness, which includes mental health. In order for states to provide equitable access to quality education and the conditions to support student learning, mental health is a key part for all this to happen. State education agencies are now charged with implementation of ESSA. This is critical piece to ensure that health and wellness is supported. This course teaches skills for providing initial support to young people experiencing mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis, and substance use disorders. Each participant will receive a certification for completing the 8-hour course and will be certified in Mental Health First Aid USA from the National Council for Behavior Health. Bullying / Cyberbullying (SB179) What s Your Role? November 13, 2018 Time: 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Workshop #: Fee: $100/$75 for Nurse Cooperative This research based training gives participant s practical steps to take to respond to bullying. This session will help to empower students to be confident in a bullying situation, and to take the lead in establishing and maintaining a safe and caring school community. Care of the Student at Risk for Severe Allergic Reactions While at School November 28, 2018 Time: 9:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. Workshop#: Location: Real Fee: $35; $0 Nurse Cooperative coordinated school health workshops

5 This workshop will address SB 27 of the 82nd Texas Legislative Session requires that all school staff be trained in the care of students at risk of experience a severe allergic reaction. This workshop will cover how to identify the signs and symptoms of a severe allergic reaction and how to care for this potentially life-threating condition. Participants will learn how to appropriately administer epinephrine injectors during the session. Discussion will include the role of the school nurse as well as the Food and Nutrition staff in identifying and developing plans for preventative care. Trauma Informed Responses November 28, 2018 Time: 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Workshop #: April 23, 2019 Time: 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Workshop #: Fee: $100/$75 for Nurse Cooperative This training will provide participants practical ways to implement trauma-informed care approaches when supporting students in a school setting. With David s Law, The Health and Safety Code has been amended to authorize schools to develop practices and procedures regarding mental health, including grief-informed and trauma-informed practices and skills, related to managing emotions, establishing and maintaining positive relationships, and responsible decision-making. Attendees will learn about: signs and symptoms of trauma, effects of trauma on development and behavior, and the effects trauma has on student achievement. Current Drug Trends & Impact on Your Campus January 16, 2019 Time: 9:00 a.m. 11:30 a.m. Workshop #: Fee: Nurse Cooperative $0; Non-Cooperative $ 35 This session will discuss the pervasive threat of prescription drug and heroin abuse amongst students. The workshop will be led by a Special Agent from the Drug Enforcement Agency and will provide guidance on possible solutions to real problems occurring on our campuses. Suicide and Self-Harm January 17, 2019 Time: 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Workshop #: Fee: $100 / $0 Nurse Cooperative Mental health and teen suicide is a difficult topic to discuss in schools, but conversation among educators surrounding this vital issue is the first essential step toward prevention. In this training, we will review current best practices and relevant research regarding students who self-injure and are at risk for developing suicidal behavior. Participants will discuss how best to serve students during the school day and explore local and regional support resources. Participants will experience strategies for student and staff discussion, risk assessment, and postvention techniques. Behavior Blitz, 2019: Mental Health and Wellness February 14-15, 2019 Time: 8:00 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Workshop #: Fee: $75; $50 for Nurse Cooperative This year Behavior Blitz is loaded with crucial and relevant Mental Health and Wellness information, including working with students with Challenging Behaviors! Hear from national presenters as they guide us through the most current strategies and the most up-to-date legal information. Everyone s favorite is here again, the opportunity to learn from peers during our blitz of breakout sessions as current practitioners from your region bring content addressing critical needs. Section 504 & Health, Medical & General Ed. Home Bound February 26, 2019 Time: 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Workshop #: Fee: $100/$75 for Nurse Cooperative Public school are required by law to accommodate the health needs of students. Schools must determine whether to use a health care plan or if the student needs to be referred and served through Section 504 due to their unique medical/ health-related challenges. To make it even more confusing, Texas also has a provision allowing for General Education Homebound for eligible students with medical conditions. This session will address serving students with medical and health related conditions, when to refer to Section 504, and addressing those requests for GEH. Critical Incidence Response April 3, 2018 Time: 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Workshop #: Fee: $100/$0 Nurse Cooperative The continued increase in crisis in our schools and community continues to be a growing concern for all of our communities. This session will provide participants with an organized structure to give emotional support after a loss or traumatic event in any of your schools, school counselor training that prepares you to lead, organize, and deliver mental and emotional support services needed after schools have experienced a loss or trauma, ideas to prepare a toolbox of initial materials and supplies needed to deliver responsive services. Ideas and suggestions on how to help provide mental and emotional support to district employees when a school experiences a loss or trauma will also be shared coordinated school health workshops 5
