1 2001 NEW MEXICO CROSS COUNTRY October 23, 2001 Contact: Alfredo Moreno (505) NEW MEXICO SET TO HOST MOUNTAIN WEST CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS Lobo Men and Women Ready To Take On The Mountain West Conference Elite UPCOMING: The University of New Mexico will host the 2001 Mountain West Conference Men s and Women s Cross Country Championships on Sunday, Oct. 27 at the Paradise Hills Golf Course in Albuquerque. Six men s and eight women s teams will battle for the Mountain West title, including the ninth-ranked Air Force men, No. 16 BYU men, the second-ranked BYU women and No. 18 Colorado State women s team. The action gets underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning with the start of the women s 6,000-meter race. The men s 8,000-meter race will begin immediately following the women s competition at 10:45 a.m. After a completing a successful regular season, both the New Mexico men s and women s teams will be looking to improve upon their finishes at the 2000 MWC Championships in Fort Collins, Colo. The Lobo men finished last among six teams, while the women were seventh out of eight teams a year ago. Chris Orrell led the men s team with a 17th place finish, while Ashlee Othick led the women s squad with a 15th place finish. BYU dominated both the men s and women s races, winning with scores of 30 and 16, respectively, last season. LAST TIME: The University of New Mexico men s and women s cross country teams each had respectable showings at the elite NCAA Pre-Meet in Greenville, S.C. on Oct. 13. The Lobo men finished tied for 15th out of 35 teams in their heat, while the women were 30th in their 34-team heat. The pre-meet, which featured 18 top 25 men s teams and 19 top 25 women s squads competing in two heats, is a preview for the NCAA Cross Country Championships held in Greenville on Nov. 19. Sophomore Matt Gonzales paced the Lobo men for the second straight meet, finishing 24th in the Black bracket with and 8K time of 25:15. Gonzales time was the fourth-fastest 8K of the year for New Mexico and was just 1:09 behind the winner, five-time NCAA track distance champion David Kimani of Alabama. Fellow sophomore Ben Ortega finished 44th in a time of 25:34 while sophomore Chris Orrell and freshman Cameron Clarke were 82nd and 96th, respectively. Sophomore Sean Flaherty placed 145th in the field of 223 runners to cap the Lobos scoring at 391 points. Sophomore Nick Martinez and senior Travis Clark were 162nd and 192nd, respectively, for New Mexico. In the women s Purple bracket, sophomore Sarah Gonzales ran the Lobos second-fastest 6K of the season, placing 81st in a time of 22:52. She was followed by senior Kim Baca and freshman Jackie Gallegos, who finished 171st and 189th, respectively. Freshmen Raquel Ricci and Christine White capped the Lobos scoring at 195th and 207th, respectively. Sophomore Erica Harker and freshman Sarah Fraher crossed the line in 209th and 222nd place respectively. LOBO CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: MEN The New Mexico men's team is coming off one of its finest regular seasons in several years. Despite fielding one of the youngest teams in the conference, with five sophomores and one freshman in the top seven, the Lobos have gelled under second-year coaches Matt and Mark Henry. UNM dominated regional rivals UTEP and New Mexico State in its season-opener, scoring an impressive 18 points en route to a victory at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational. After defeating LSU to take second at the UNM Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico cruised to victory over ten teams, including UCLA and Arizona State's "B" team, at the ASU Invitational. The Lobos wrapped up the regular season with a solid showing at the elite NCAA Pre-Meet, taking 15th in the Black bracket. Though Travis Clark is the only senior on the squad, the young Lobos have thrived because of their outstanding depth and solid grouping of the top seven. In all four regular season meets this fall, New Mexico s top five runners have finished no more than 1:36 apart from each other, while the top three have finishes no more than 48 seconds of each other. Sophomores Matt Gonzales, Chris Orrell and Ben Ortega have led the team in each of its four races this season with Orrell and Gonzales notching a pair of victories. Orrell, who led the Lobos with a 17th place finish at last year's MWC Championships, has a three top five finishes this season, while Gonzales, a Division II All-American at New Mexico Highlands University last year, has placed among the top 25 in each race and has recorded three of the team's top 10 8K times this season. 3 Meanwhile, Ortega, the MWC 10,000-meter outdoor track champion last spring, has recorded three top 15 finishes this season. Rounding out a talented top seven for New Mexico is Clark, sophomores Sean Flaherty and Nick Martinez, and freshman Cameron Clarke, who have combined for 11 top 20 finishes. WOMEN Despite losing its top three runners from 2000 (Ashlee Othick, Jackie Morgan and Hannah Radzinski), the UNM women's team has been competitive in every meet this fall. Like the men, the women's squad is dominated by youth with seven freshman and three sophomores rotating among the top seven. Before sliding a bit in its last two meets, New Mexico displayed good potential with a pair of second place finishes at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational and UNM Lobo Invitational to start the season. The Lobos notched only one second place finish in all of Sophomore Sarah Gonzales has emerged as the surprising leader of the women's team after spending much of 2000 as the team s sixth runner, finishing no higher than 21st. During the off-season, Gonzales committed herself to the coaching staff s training program and has subsequently developed into one of the best young runners in the MWC. Despite her diminutive 5-1 frame, Gonzales has recorded New Mexico's top two 6K times and has a pair of top 10 finishes this fall. Last month, she had the best performance of her collegiate career at the Paradise Hills Golf Course, blowing away the field at the UNM Lobo Invitational for her first career victory. Like Gonzales, senior Kim Baca had an outstanding off-season of training and is also enjoying her finest collegiate cross country season this fall. Perhaps the most consistent member of the team, Baca has three top 25 finishes and two of the team's top 10 6K times. Meanwhile, freshman Jackie Gallegos, a threetime New Mexico state champion, has displayed outstanding potential in her first season of collegiate competition. Despite battling fatigue and illness in the last few races, Gallegos has two top 15 finishes, two of the team's top 10 times and has the talent to lead New Mexico up the conference standings. A bevy of other young runners will also be counted upon to step in and help the Lobo women with some much-needed points on Saturday. Sophomore Erica Harker and freshmen Laura Marquis, Racquel Ricci, Sarah Fraher, Christine White and Amanda Woods could all be in contention for the Lobos' crucial fourth and fifth scoring positions. GONZALES EARNS MOUNTAIN WEST HONOR: University of New Mexico sophomore Matt Gonzales was selected as the Mountain West Conference Men s Cross Country Athlete Of The Week on Oct. 10 after winning his first meet as a Lobo at the Arizona State Invitational on Oct. 5. Gonzales, a Division II All-American at New Mexico Highlands University last year, became the second New Mexico runner honored by the MWC, joining fellow sophomore Chris Orrell who was named Men s Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Sep. 4. Gonzales completed the 8K in 25:32.3, leading UNM to its second victory in three meets over a 10-team field that included Western Region No. 10 UCLA and No. 15 Arizona State s B team. The Santa Fe, N.M. native recorded his third top 10 finish in as many meets and clocked the team s fourth-fastest 8K this season. Orrell finished 5.7 seconds behind Gonzales in second as New Mexico placed all five scoring runners in the top 20 to finish with a score of 31, 25 points better than second place UCLA. Gonzales joined Orrell as the men s second individual meet winner of the season. Last year, no individual placed higher than third for the UNM men s team.
